Chapter 108: Chapter 108 To explode
“The pay stays the same, ten thousand dollars for a full month’s work.”
With such a good deal, Alana certainly wouldn’t refuse. “Okay.”
Luca suddenly looked down at her legs and asked with concern,
“Um, a couple of days ago, you mentioned your knee was injured. How is it now?”
Alana replied, “Thanks for asking, Luca. It’s almost all better now.”
Luca wasn’t entirely reassured. “Let me take a look.”
Alana was wearing a white chiffon blouse today, paired with a long floral-print dress.
The skirt reached her ankles, so her knees were obscured.
Hearing this, she gently lifted the hem of her skirt.
This revealed a small portion of her left knee, allowing Luca to take a quick look.
Luca saw that the scabs on it had mostly fallen off.
It didn’t seem too serious after all.
He breathed a sigh of relief, realizing that because of her injury, he hadn’t been able to rest well during his trip out of town these past few days.
Of course, the main reason was the sudden appearance of a man’s voice on her phone. Those words, “Her man” had filled him with an unprecedented sense of crisis.
Eve told him that the man was just a regular male friend of Alana’s.
But was he really just an ordinary male friend?
That day, he heard the intense possessiveness in the man’s tone crystal clear.
That man’s feelings for Alana were definitely not as simple as those of an ordinary friend!
He asked himself: if he really were away on a business trip for a month, would Alana still be single when he returned?
He wasn’t willing to take that chance, so he came over early to assess the situation.
And while he was at it, he wanted to see if he could grow closer to her.
After all, she was the rare girl who had made his heart skip a beat at first sight.
To meet a girl who made his heart skip a beat at first sight was luck enough in this lifetime; he didn’t want to let her slip away so easily.
Luca couldn’t help but ask, “Would you mind walking with me for a bit? If you’re up for it, would you like to go out with me and walk the cat and dog?”
Alana smoothed out the hem of her skirt and nodded. “Sure.”
After all, it was within the scope of her job, so there was no reason to refuse.
Luca smiled gently. “Then I’ll go get the leash.”
*********
As Stephan drove back to his apartment, he passed by Luca’s building and saw the lights on inside.
Guessing that Alana was still inside, he slammed his foot on the gas pedal. After arriving home and parking the car, he walked back out.
Just as he stepped out, a voice suddenly called out to him.
“Stephan!”
Stephan turned around to find Darla, whom he hadn’t seen in over a week.
He furrowed his brow. “What are you doing here?”
Darla walked slowly toward him, confident and composed.
“I just moved in. Aunt Cynthia told me you lived here, but I didn’t believe her at first. Now that I see you, it turns out we really live in the same Estate now. What a coincidence. Doesn’t that mean we’re meant to be?”
Stephan’s expression remained impassive. “I wouldn’t go so far as to call it fate, a planned encounter is more like it.”
Darla chuckled softly. “Mr. Hudson, you’re as funny as ever.”
Stephan eyed her.
Where exactly did she see that he was being humorous?
Darla curved her lips and continued, “Are you planning to go for a walk? Why don’t we go for a walk together?”
He was just about to speak while a loud sound came.
“Woof, woof, woof!”
Suddenly, a large golden retriever came charging toward them, barking all the while.
“Ah, it’s a dog!” Darla let out a startled cry and instinctively hid behind Stephan, grabbing his arm.
Stephan turned around and saw that the large golden retriever charging toward them was the very same one Alana usually walked.
Did the sudden appearance of this Golden Retriever mean that Alana was nearby too?!
Sure enough.
He glanced up and saw Alana following right behind the Golden Retriever.
And standing beside Alana was a man.
He recognized that man.
Stephan’s dark eyes fixed on her, his gaze intense.
His attention was entirely on Alana, so much so that he forgot to push Darla away at first.
When Alana saw him, she also froze for a moment.
Then she noticed the woman hiding behind him. She was very beautiful, wearing a white dress, with an air of nobility.
Standing together, the two seemed strangely well-matched.
Alana stared blankly. The woman’s hand was still tightly clasped around Stephan’s arm, and they stood so close together.
For some reason, she felt a strange sense of unease. The big golden retriever clearly recognized Stephan and rushed over to greet him.
“Woof, woof, woof!”
After all, in the eyes of the big golden retriever, a man whose pant leg it had bitten to mark as its own was already considered one of its own kind.
However, this terrified Darla, who was hiding behind Stephan, causing her to press even closer to him.
“Ah! Help!”
“Quick, quick, shoo that dog away!”
Gary quickly shouted, “Ollie, come here! Don’t scare people!”
The large golden retriever was very obedient to Luca. Upon hearing this, it stopped bothering Stephan, wagged its tail, and turned back to walk away.
Once the golden retriever reached Luca’s side, he quickly grabbed the dog’s leash and turned to Stephan and Darla.
“Sorry, my dog scared you. But don’t be afraid, he has a great temperament and wouldn’t hurt anyone.”
Stephan remained expressionless and didn’t respond.
Darla could only force a smile and say, “No, it’s fine. Just hold onto it tight and keep it from running around. I’m just a little afraid of dogs, especially big ones like this. When I saw it suddenly charging toward me, I had a bit of a knee-jerk reaction.”
Luca nodded. “Alright, I’ll hold it tight and keep it from running around.”
He turned to look at Alana. “Alana, let’s go. We don’t want to disturb the young couple
on their date.”
He’d just seen Darla wrap her arm around Stephan’s and press herself against him, so it was only natural to assume they were a couple.
Alana heard the words “let’s not disturb the young couple on their date” and fell silent for a moment. She tore her gaze away from Stephan. “Okay.”
She grabbed the orange cat’s leash and turned to leave.
She didn’t glance back at the man behind her even once.
Luca, also holding the leash of his golden retriever, followed Alana. Their backs grew smaller and smaller as they walked away.
Darla felt a slight flicker of secret delight upon realizing she’d just been mistaken for Stephan’s girlfriend.
She smiled and said, “Stephan, look at that, that young couple thinks we’re a couple too. Don’t you think we make a great match? Why don’t you consider taking things further with me?”
Stephan stared intently at Alana’s retreating figure as she walked away with another man, his eyes dark as ink.
For a moment, he wanted to rush over and tear them apart.
But damn it!
His feet suddenly felt as if they were leaden, utterly uncooperative.
So, was she planning to choose that wild man named Luca instead of him?!
The more he thought about it, the more suffocated he felt.
A ball of fire gathered in his chest, as if it were about to explode.
