Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Why Not Get Married While Brother Zheng Is on Leave?

The chef, seeing Su Zhaozhao was so agreeable, thought for a moment and said, "Alright, I’d like to have a taste. If they’re good, we can sell them in our cafeteria."

The apples were all so plump and round, and they looked incredibly fresh. They had a rich, fragrant scent, too.

"Then I’ll pack them all up and deliver them to the cafeteria for you," Su Zhaozhao said, smiling brightly.

"Alright."

After paying, the chef left to shop at the other stalls.

Su Zhaozhao packed up her things and took them to the cafeteria.

It was a good thing she hadn’t been greedy and put too much out for sale. Otherwise, she never would have been able to carry it all.

She delivered the goods to the military base elementary school’s cafeteria. After she put everything away and was walking out, she unexpectedly saw Zhou Chengguo.

Zhou Chengguo was heading to the cafeteria with a few people dressed like teachers, all of them talking and laughing.

It was still quite early, but schools usually started their morning reading sessions around this time.

That meant the teachers had to get up even earlier.

Clearly, they had just woken up and were on their way to breakfast.

Su Zhaozhao wasn’t worried about Zhou Chengguo recognizing her, as she was bundled up tightly. Her entire face was covered, leaving only her eyes visible.

Her clothes were black, making her look low-key and plain.

Sure enough, they merely glanced at her before turning back to their conversation.

Su Zhaozhao took the opportunity to observe Zhou Chengguo boldly. In that short time, he glanced at the female colleague beside him five or six times.

He directed almost all of his conversation toward her as well.

He left the other two colleagues completely on the sidelines.

’Is that the girl Zhou Chengguo likes?’

She wore gold-rimmed glasses and had short hair. Dressed in a white shirt and a long black skirt, she had a scholarly air about her.

’So he was willing to break his marriage agreement with Wen Xiaoqi for her.’

’Well, that’s his business. As long as he pays back the money, it’s fine.’

After finishing her delivery, Su Zhaozhao saw that it was still quite early, so she bought some soy milk and fried dough sticks before heading upstairs.

She knocked on Wen Xiaoqi’s door, and Wen Xiaoqi answered.

She was already up and packing her things.

Su Zhaozhao glanced into the room and saw that she seemed to have finished packing.

"You’re leaving?"

Wen Xiaoqi nodded. "Since it’s all settled now, I’d better head back soon. I don’t want my parents to worry."

Although Wen Xiaoqi still looked a little down, she was much calmer than she had been the day before.

Su Zhaozhao pushed the soy milk and fried dough sticks into her hands. "Here, eat up. They’re best when they’re hot."

"Zhaozhao, you’re so good to me." As she spoke, Wen Xiaoqi’s eyes began to well up with tears again.

"No, no, don’t cry! You’re going home now, so you should be happy."

Su Zhaozhao quickly tried to comfort her. She really couldn’t stand to see Wen Xiaoqi cry.

Wen Xiaoqi nodded and pulled Su Zhaozhao into her room.

The two of them began to eat, each with a fried dough stick in hand.

They chatted as they ate.

"Zhaozhao, how long are you staying here?"

"About a month, I guess?" This was the terms of her bet with Xie Huaizheng.

But the last time they spoke, Xie Huaizheng said he would talk with her after he returned from his mission. ’Maybe I’ll ask about it again today.’

’Does he actually want to marry me or not?’

Of course, she was also a little nervous about the prospect of marriage. After all, Xie Huaizheng was a Camp Commander, and marrying him would definitely involve a background check.

’They might even go to my family home. If the original owner’s father and stepmother find out, they’ll probably object strongly.’

’Speaking of which, I wonder what kind of chaos has broken out back in Jiang City since I left.’

’But that’s not my problem to worry about anymore.’

Su Zhaozhao knew she only needed to focus on one thing right now.

"Zhaozhao, I really envy you. You and Camp Commander Xie also had a childhood betrothal, and I heard him say that you two haven’t seen each other for many years. For him to still like you after all that time... that’s just wonderful."

It wasn’t like her situation. She had actually spent much more time with Zhou Chengguo, but unfortunately, he didn’t like her at all.

As she carefully recalled their past interactions, she realized Zhou Chengguo had probably only ever seen her as a little sister.

’That’s not how a man acts when he’s truly in love with a woman.’

Xie Huaizheng claimed he wasn’t fond of Su Zhaozhao yet, but Wen Xiaoqi could sense that he respected her and took good care of her.

At the very least, he had favorable feelings for her.

"He likes me?" Su Zhaozhao was stunned. ’Wen Xiaoqi has to be wrong,’ she thought.

"Camp Commander Xie is a good man, Zhaozhao. You should hold on to this," Wen Xiaoqi said.

"Don’t worry. What about you? When does your train leave? I can take you to the station."

"I’m planning to head back this afternoon. I’ll catch a train from West City District," said Wen Xiaoqi.

"I’ll take you, then." ’I’m pretty bored here anyway,’ Su Zhaozhao thought. ’I might as well take a trip to the city and look around.’

"Oh no, that would be too much trouble for you."

"I was planning to go shopping for a few things anyway, so it’s no trouble at all," Su Zhaozhao said with a smile.

And so, it was settled.

"Zhaozhao, when you get the chance, you have to come visit my family. I’ll have my dad slaughter the fattest chicken for you!" Wen Xiaoqi said, gripping Su Zhaozhao’s hand, unable to bear parting.

She didn’t know if she would ever be able to see Su Zhaozhao again.

In all likelihood, she would never come back to a place like this again.

"Okay, it’s a deal!" Su Zhaozhao agreed. Wen Xiaoqi was the first friend her age she had made since coming to this world.

Even though Wen Xiaoqi was several years younger than her actual age.

After chatting with Wen Xiaoqi for a while longer, she returned to her room.

A little while later, Xiao Yuanming arrived with her meal. Su Zhaozhao said to him, "Brother Xiao, starting tomorrow, you don’t need to bring me food anymore. I can handle it myself. I know you’re busy with training, and you can’t keep doing this for me."

"Hey, no need to be so polite with me, little sis," Xiao Yuanming said. "It’s not that," Su Zhaozhao replied. "I was just thinking that if I eat in the base cafeteria, I’ll have more chances to run into Huai Zheng."

Seeing the crafty glint in her big eyes, Xiao Yuanming immediately adopted a look of understanding. "Right, you’re right! The Camp Commander is so busy. If you don’t eat at the cafeteria, you’ll barely ever see him."

"But when he gets back from his mission, he’ll have a few days of leave. You two can spend some quality time together then. And look, since you’re here to marry him, why not use those few days to get the paperwork done? Military marriages are complicated, especially for someone at Brother Zheng’s rank. It has to go through layers of approval!"

"That’s an excellent suggestion!" Su Zhaozhao’s face lit up with anticipation.

But then she had another thought. ’Would Xie Huaizheng agree?’

’Probably not.’

’That man may seem wild and carefree, but when it comes to marriage, he’s ridiculously cautious.’

’He really is the male lead, after all.’

’Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been able to save himself for the female lead despite being adored by so many other women.’

After chatting with Xiao Yuanming for a bit longer, Su Zhaozhao also began to tidy up her room.
