Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Do You Know Me?

"That’s me. What is it?" Su Zhaozhao sized up the woman in front of her.

Her first impression was that the woman was very wealthy.

She wasn’t actually wearing any jewelry, and her clothes were loose and comfortable, likely for the convenience of bathing.

But Su Zhaozhao could still tell she was very wealthy.

Her demeanor was gentle and amiable, and she spoke in a slow, unhurried cadence. And then there was her skin. Though she was no longer young, it was clear she took excellent care of it.

Su Zhaozhao would have thought her wealthy even by modern standards, let alone in this era.

’She just wondered whose family member she was.’

’Come to think of it, why does this woman look so familiar?’

"Is that young woman all right? I only just arrived today, and running into something like this was so frightening," Zhang Jingshu inquired.

"She’s doing well. I took her to dinner tonight. Don’t worry, she’s in a much better state now."

"That’s good. That’s good." Zhang Jingshu sighed in relief.

Su Zhaozhao nodded to her and returned to her room.

Just as she was about to close the door, the woman called out to Su Zhaozhao. "Oh, by the way, miss. I’ll be staying here for a few days to visit my daughter. My name is Zhang Jingshu. May I ask yours?"

"My name is Su Zhaozhao," Su Zhaozhao said.

’Su Zhaozhao had no memory of the name Zhang Jingshu from the novel.’

’She had trouble remembering the names of the main characters in the first place, recalling only bits and pieces.’

’Since she had no recollection of the name whatsoever, Su Zhaozhao knew she couldn’t be part of the main cast.’

’Not Xie Huaizheng’s mother, nor the female lead’s.’

Instead, it was Zhang Jingshu whose eyes widened in apparent surprise upon hearing her name.

Su Zhaozhao’s gaze immediately turned suspicious.

’Why such a dramatic reaction?’

’Does she know me?’

"Do you know me?" Su Zhaozhao asked.

Zhang Jingshu shook her head. "No. I’m going to go bathe now. You should get some rest."

"Alright."

Zhang Jingshu turned and left, sighing to herself. ’What a small world. To think I’d run into her of all people.’

’Just this evening, her daughter had specifically sought her out, asking her to find out where Xie Huaizheng’s fiancée was staying.’

’But she didn’t know Xie Huaizheng’s fiancée at all. Jiang Manzhi had told her, "You’ll know her when you see her. You won’t be able to forget her, because she’s stunningly beautiful."’

’While saying this, Jiang Manzhi had added resentfully, "But not as beautiful as me."’

’Zhang Jingshu had immediately stroked Jiang Manzhi’s hair, saying, "Of course not. My daughter is the most beautiful one of all."’

’But even then, Su Zhaozhao’s face had floated into Zhang Jingshu’s mind.’

’After learning her name, Zhang Jingshu was astonished. It really was her!’

’The very young woman who had bested her daughter.’

’At first, Zhang Jingshu had been biased against Su Zhaozhao. After all, Jiang Manzhi was her own daughter, and she had been in love with Xie Huaizheng for so many years.’

’The elders on both sides had tried to set them up numerous times.’

’It was a great regret to Zhang Jingshu that they had never succeeded.’

’She couldn’t help but be prejudiced against this so-called fiancée who had suddenly appeared on the scene.’

’She didn’t think Xie Huaizheng was the type to fall in love at first sight.’

’But now, having seen Su Zhaozhao and spoken with her, all of her previous biases had vanished without a trace.’

’Zhang Jingshu felt that there was good reason for Xie Huaizheng to have fallen for Su Zhaozhao.’

’She was young and beautiful, but more importantly, she had an extraordinary personality and a mind of her own.’

’To save a young woman who was ready to die for love and help her find the will to live again... what an incredibly difficult thing to do!’

’At her age, most girls were struggling with their own romantic troubles, yet she was already helping others with theirs.’

’Truly remarkable.’

’Zhang Jingshu felt she had to convince her daughter to give up. She could never win against Su Zhaozhao.’

Su Zhaozhao took a bath directly in her space.

The public bathhouse was not an option for her. The supply of spiritual spring water in her space was endless, impossible to deplete.

What’s more, she could adjust the temperature at will. If she wanted it warmer, the water would heat up automatically.

After her bath, her skin felt like it had gained a protective layer, leaving it smooth, translucent, and wonderful to the touch.

Su Zhaozhao took another look at the new items that had appeared in her space.

’The number of things in here is really growing. But thankfully, everything in the space is already well-organized.’

For instance, daily necessities were in one section, food was in another, and medicine had its own separate area.

The snack section in the food area had grown. Su Zhaozhao tore open a pack of spicy gluten strips and began to eat.

She had been craving modern snacks so badly. She had checked out the stores here, but the variety of snacks was pitifully small.

It was basically just some dried goods, candy, and cookies.

Su Zhaozhao finished the bag of spicy gluten strips and washed it down with a bottle of cola.

Only then did she emerge from her space, feeling utterly content.

She then collapsed onto her bed and fell asleep. She needed to get up even earlier tomorrow to sell all her goods.

That way, she could avoid the trouble of Xie Huaizheng coming to find her and not being able to.

’She was worried Xie Huaizheng might track her to the market.’

’Although her disguise was successful, it could only fool someone like Zhou Xiaoyun. A shrewd man like Xie Huaizheng, with his sharp eyes? There was no way she could deceive him.’

’If he questioned her about where she got her merchandise, Su Zhaozhao honestly wouldn’t know how to answer.’

「The next day.」

Su Zhaozhao was up at five o’clock. She packed her things and set off for the market.

The people who came to buy produce this early, around five, were usually shop owners or canteen chefs.

Today, Su Zhaozhao was selling sweet potatoes and apples, displaying them side by side.

Since sweet potatoes were a daily staple and well-suited for a canteen, a chef on a procurement run bought out Su Zhaozhao’s entire stock in one go.

Su Zhaozhao looked at the portly chef in surprise. "You want all of them?"

"That’s right, miss. Your sweet potatoes look fresh and high-quality. Pack them all up for me. Can you deliver?"

Su Zhaozhao asked, "Where to?"

"The military district elementary school."

’So he was supplying the elementary school canteen.’

Although many students went home for lunch or brought their own meals, the school had a small canteen to accommodate some students as well as the teachers.

This batch of sweet potatoes would be enough for everyone who ate there.

"I can do that," Su Zhaozhao said.

’This meant she could pack up early today.’

"Let me just sell off my apples first, and then I’ll deliver them," Su Zhaozhao said with a smile.

The chef glanced at Su Zhaozhao’s apples. He thought they looked good too, but their canteen didn’t serve fruit, and besides, they weren’t cheap.

So, he picked one up to inspect it, then put it back down.

Su Zhaozhao could see what the chef was thinking.

She said to the chef, "How about this? I’ll give you a few to try. If you think they’re good, you could display some on the canteen windowsill for sale. If they sell well, I’ll give you a commission. What do you think?"

’If this turned into a steady supply arrangement,’ she thought, ’I wouldn’t have to haul myself to the market every day.’

Delivering directly to the elementary school would be much less tiring than waking up at the crack of dawn.
