Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The gift
Evan drove through the night, letting the cool breeze blow across his face. Feeling sorry for himself right now was pointless.
No matter how much he explained, people would only look down on him more.
The only way to shut those mocking mouths was with cold, hard cash — luxury cars, big houses, and real success.
Only then would everyone change the way they saw him.
And right now, a perfect shortcut was right in front of him. All he had to do was complete the system’s task and he could instantly get rewards worth $150,000!
The only thing left was to coax his wife and make her willingly accept his training.
Ring ring ring~~~
His phone suddenly rang.
While waiting at a red light, Evan picked it up. It was Sophia.
"Hey babe, what’s wrong?" Evan answered gently, his voice full of warmth.
"Evan, I’m sorry... Dad really went too far tonight... I..." Sophia’s guilty voice came through as soon as she picked up.
"It’s okay. I’m used to it already. As long as you believe in me and support me, I don’t care what anyone else says. Sophia, please trust me. I can do this. Just give me one more month, alright? If I still can’t make it after a month, I’ll go find a proper job," Evan said softly.
In the past, he would have answered impatiently. But now, after seeing the system’s analysis, he knew he had to change his attitude if he wanted to completely conquer his wife.
These years hadn’t been easy for Sophia either.
"Of course I believe you, Evan. Are you okay? Do you want me to come out and keep you company?" Sophia asked, still worried.
"I’m fine. I’ll be back soon. Tonight... let’s go to bed early... hehe." Evan chuckled playfully.
"What are you saying! Seriously... What naughty thoughts are you having now?" Sophia’s shy, embarrassed voice made Evan smile.
After hanging up, Evan drove straight to the biggest luxury mall nearby.
...
When he got home, the family had already broken up unhappily. Everyone had gone back to their rooms.
His father-in-law’s Audi A6L was gone — probably out playing poker.
Evan carried a gift bag upstairs with a mysterious smile on his face.
From Emma’s room on the second floor came the sound of soft crying.
Evan really wanted to go in and comfort her right now to raise her intimacy, but with his mother-in-law and Sophia still awake, it wasn’t the right time.
Luckily, Emma was on summer break. There would be plenty of chances during the day.
Back in their bedroom, Sophia was sitting alone doing embroidery.
Knowing his wife had a strong cleanliness obsession, Evan first went into the bathroom, turned on the hot water, and filled the bathtub. He sprinkled it with fragrant flower petals and luxurious bath bombs he had bought specially.
After preparing everything, he walked back into the bedroom.
Seeing him return, Sophia smiled and asked, "Evan, where did you go? You were acting so mysterious..."
As she spoke, she noticed the fancy gift bag in his hand.
"Darling, you’ve worked so hard these days. This is my way of thanking you for always supporting me. I feel so lucky to have such an amazing wife. Sophia, I love you."
Evan was like a completely different man today.
In the past, he would never have said such sweet, romantic words. Even when he was chasing her, he had never said "I love you."
Seeing Evan suddenly give her a gift and speak so tenderly, Sophia’s face turned bright red. Her heart melted, and she felt shy and overwhelmed.
She almost felt like she didn’t recognize the husband she had been married to for over a year.
"Oh... We’re already an old married couple... How can you still say such embarrassing things... You don’t earn much right now... Why did you buy me a gift..."
Even though she said no, Sophia eagerly opened the gift bag with excited hands.
"Ah!..."
Seeing the box inside, Sophia covered her mouth in shock.
"Oh my god... Bulgari..."
Her hands trembled as she opened the box, her eyes widening with pleasant surprise.
Inside was a sparkling Bulgari Blue Balloon watch — silver dial, elegant white ceramic strap. It was exactly the one she had wanted for so long.
"Evan! Are you crazy?! Where did you get so much money? This watch costs over five thousand dollars! How did you..."
"Darling, let me put it on for you. See how beautiful it looks." Before Sophia could react, Evan gently took the watch out and fastened it around her slender wrist. "I know you’ve wanted this for a long time but never bought it for yourself. I just got paid for my writing, so I bought it for you. Do you like it?"
Evan looked at her with deep affection and said softly, "Darling, it looks perfect on you... like it was made just for your wrist..."
He spoke casually, but inside, his heart was bleeding.
His savings weren’t nearly enough. To buy this watch, Evan had spent everything he had and even maxed out his credit cards and all his loans.
