Chapter 13: Chapter 13: The Pain of a Live-In Son-in-Law
"Dad, I’m really trying. Just give me a little more time. I will make it," Evan said with a helpless smile, swallowing his pride.
Facing his domineering father-in-law, Evan, who still couldn’t earn much money, couldn’t even lift his head.
"Trying? Trying? I haven’t seen you try at all! You said the same thing last time, and what happened? Look at you now! People are saying my son-in-law is a worthless loser who just stays home living off his wife! My daughter is so outstanding. How did she end up with someone like you..."
The more Victor looked at Evan, the angrier he became. Fueled by alcohol, his face turned red as he scolded Evan in front of the whole family.
"Dad, stop it! Evan isn’t spending your money. He may not earn much right now, but he’s working hard. What’s wrong with giving him more time?" Sophia frowned and spoke up for Evan.
"Not spending my money? Hmph! Then where does the food he eats come from? Where does the house he lives in come from? If he lived outside, would his income even be enough for one month? What kind of good life can you have with him?!"
Victor glared at Sophia angrily. "I’m saying this for your own good! Don’t you know what the neighbors and relatives are saying about him? When I went for New Year visits this year, I couldn’t even raise my head! Other people’s sons and sons-in-law are all managers and supervisors earning over ten thousand a month. Look at him! What does he have to deserve you?!"
"Dad, please stop..." Emma looked at Evan with sympathy and tried to stop her father.
"Enough, enough! It’s rare for the whole family to eat together. Let’s not talk about this today!" Helen, who had a much better impression of Evan after earlier, also spoke up for him. "Our Evan isn’t that bad. At least he’s honest and treats us well."
"Hmph!" Seeing Evan keep his head down without talking back, Victor lost interest in scolding him further. He took a big gulp of liquor and stopped.
Evan stayed silent on the surface, but under the table, his hands were clenched tightly into fists.
In the year since he became a live-in son-in-law, Evan had grown used to this kind of mockery and harsh scolding.
As the live-in son-in-law, he could only endure it all. He poured all his hopes into his novels, writing madly day and night to prove himself.
But after the big crackdown, his profitable book got banned. His new stories didn’t fit the "positive energy" requirements. He kept failing and getting rejected.
For the past six months, he achieved nothing. His savings were almost gone.
Without the system, Evan might have given in today, given up writing and his dreams, and gone back to the factory for a mediocre life.
But now it was different!
The system had given him hope!
Hope to wash away his shame and prove himself!
Evan swore that he would pay back every insult and mockery he suffered today — doubled!
"Dad, I have something to discuss with you and Mom..." Emma suddenly spoke up.
"I’m graduating soon. I want to join the internal audition for Star Entertainment’s new girl group. But it’s invite-only... My teacher agreed to recommend me, but she wants a $15,000 recommendation fee..."
"What?! Fifteen thousand dollars?! Is your teacher crazy for money? They want money before you even get selected?" Helen slammed the table in shock. "No way! I don’t trust this Star Entertainment or girl group thing. I heard those female idols all get kept by rich men! Today it’s money, tomorrow it’ll be sleeping with them! I absolutely refuse!"
"Mom! That’s just gossip! Not all idols are like that! Dancing and singing is my dream! I have to try!" Emma stood up emotionally, fighting back.
"No! I will never agree to you joining any girl group! It’s not that I don’t want to spend the money. A proper girl from a good family shouldn’t go to that kind of place! Do you know what people call those girl group stars now? Whores! If you dare join, I will cut ties with you! I won’t let you ruin our family’s reputation!" Victor slammed the table furiously.
"I don’t care!! I’m going anyway!! If you won’t help me, I’ll find a way myself!!" Emma shouted with tears in her eyes. She wiped her face and ran upstairs.
"It’s so rare to have a family dinner and you all ruin it... I’m going upstairs to study." Mia said in annoyance and left too.
Evan had lost his appetite completely. He politely stood up and said, "I’m full," then put his bowl in the kitchen and walked out the door.
