Chapter 40: Chapter 40

He hit her so hard she sat there stunned, a lock of black hair swinging down over half her face.

"Are, are you insane!?"

Bruce sneered. "You think I’m a stupid dog? I’m as smart as a monkey! You think I can’t hear your rotten little scheme?"

Althea’s eyes flew wide, how did this blockhead suddenly get smart?

Bruce was simple, not stupid, slow about most things, but the moment something threatened Soren, it was as if someone slapped an intelligence-boosting talisman on his forehead.

It boiled down to one thing, absolute loyalty.

He raised his hand for another slap, Althea squeezed her eyes shut and shrieked that it was all Abel’s idea.

Abel was dumbfounded, sister, you’re throwing me to the wolves! All three of us plotted this together, how is it suddenly my idea alone?

Since it didn’t touch Soren directly, Bruce’s brain couldn’t untangle it, he glared at Abel and took it as truth.

"I knew you were the worst of the bunch!"

"Son of a bitch!" Bruce drove a fist into Abel’s stomach, the pain hit so hard Abel couldn’t scream.

"I’ll teach you to be bad! I’ll teach you to be bad!"

Soren brought Lysara and Ethel to the outskirts of Black Dragon Mountain.

Black Dragon Mountain was no single peak but an entire range, its total area only slightly smaller than the Endless Demonic Domain.

Lysara’s whole body prickled, corners of her eyes twitching, Soren felt it too, pressure like his eardrums were about to rupture.

The famous sonic wave, neither spiritual energy nor demonic energy could block it.

But contact was contact, and contact was all the Strategy Encyclopedia required, lines of text woven from Great Dao energy appeared at once.

[The Fox Cry of Black Dragon Mountain.]

[The Fox Cry originates from the peak of the central mountain in the range.]

[An ancient Dragon-Suppressing Stele stands there, a special method of sealing.]

[It suppresses a Heaven-Robbing Black Dragon beneath Black Dragon Mountain.]

[The Dragon-Suppressing Stele was left by an expert of the Ice Heaven Alluring Fox clan. To suppress the mighty Black Dragon, that expert spent nearly all the blood essence and soul power in their body.]

[Even so, the stele could only force the Heaven-Robbing Black Dragon into deep slumber. It can neither erase the dragon nor suppress it forever.]

[The long grind of years has made the expert’s soul suffer terribly within the stele, slowly breeding powerful resentment.]

[When approaching the Dragon-Suppressing Stele, Master must beware that expert’s resentment amalgamation.]

[As for the mountain’s sonic wave, it is in truth the bloodline coercion and soul coercion radiating from the stele itself.]

So inside this mountain sat an ancient sealing stele left by a Spirit clan expert, and under it, a Heaven-Robbing Black Dragon, a seal bought with everything that expert had, and it still only managed a deep slumber.

The Black Dragon was the real threat, could its strength have passed beyond the Emperor realm?

A terrifying thought, the gap between tiers was immense, let alone across whole realms, anyone who knew such a thing lay under this mountain would feel their feet backing up on their own.

Soren wasn’t panicking, he had the Strategy Encyclopedia, which could conquer all things.

The Black Dragon was terrifying, but find its strategy, and it became simple.

But obtaining that strategy required direct contact, first, he needed inside the mountain.

[Take one drop of Ice Heaven Alluring Fox clan blood essence, following the pattern below, lay out a totem capable of resonating with and offsetting the coercion of that expert.]

[Draw the totem anywhere on the body to become immune to the sonic wave.]

At the bottom of the panel sat a runic mark of vicious complexity, with Middle-Tier Demon Emperor strength, complexity meant nothing.

"Ethel, lend me a drop of your blood essence."

"Mm, alright."

She nodded quickly, raising a finger to cut, then paused. "Just one drop?"

"One drop is enough."

She forced out a drop of blood essence, Soren’s demonic energy folded around it, shaping it.

Three or four seconds, a blood-red brand hung in the air, humming with energy, another wave of his hand split it in two.

One sank into Lysara’s body, the other he absorbed into his own, Ethel needed no such thing.

She had been tilting her head, silently watching him work, dying to know what the totem was for.

Why didn’t he give one to me? In the moment her thoughts wandered, Soren had already charged into Black Dragon Mountain.

Her small mouth fell open, she stared.

Lysara muttered beside her. "This demon truly lives up to his reputation."

"He even has a way to cancel that bizarre sonic wave."

"And that totem was no demon technique, it looked like a Spirit clan totem I once saw in an ancient tome."

She couldn’t make sense of it, so she followed, Ethel scrambled after them.

Ethel only held King Realm strength, even with Soren and Lysara deliberately slowing, catching up took real effort.

She watched Soren’s calm face, those deep eyes, that solemn and unknowable air, as if he could thread past and present together and know everything in between.

She sighed in admiration.

The Demon Emperor is so mysterious, unlike anyone I’ve ever met, even the Clan Chief, who I used to think was super, super powerful, can’t compare to Soren.

She caught herself and ducked her head, embarrassed, the Clan Chief only has Upper-Tier Spirit Venerable strength, Soren is a Middle-Tier Demon Emperor, of course it’s different.

She shook her head and strangled the wild thoughts.

The Ice Heaven Alluring Fox clan territory.

A cluster of buildings stood against the mountainside, and these were only the entrances, exits, and watchtowers, the true territory lay carved through great swathes of the mountain’s body.

With only fifty thousand members, the clan hid inside Black Dragon Mountain and moved with extreme caution.

Then, almost as one, tens of thousands of clansmen sensed a powerful fluctuation closing in fast.

The Clan Chief and the Elders stared blankly at the patch of sky it came from, one Emperor Realm expert could exterminate their whole clan, but two had arrived at once.
