Chapter 62: Honour

Professor Liang entered the room and sat in the chair near the bed, Xingluo greeted him before placing her phone aside. "When are we leaving, Professor?"

Professor Liang gave her a calm smile. "Do not worry, today is the last day and everyone should be allowed to leave after the remaining matters are settled."

Xingluo relaxed slightly, but Professor Liang continued before she could speak.

"Unfortunately, the investigation found almost nothing. The people we were certain had helped the infiltrator were either found dead or had already disappeared, while every other trail was erased before we could follow it."

Xingluo sighed after hearing that, while Wuxia merely shrugged beside her. "That was expected," he said. "It is the Church, after all."

Professor Liang could not hear him and continued, "Before everyone leaves, there will be a small memorial ceremony for the two soldiers and the military contestant who died during the attack."

Xingluo’s expression became gloomy as she remembered how quickly the three of them had been sacrificed by the Green Priest.

Professor Liang noticed the change and sighed. "All three of them were orphans, so there are no families waiting outside the base to receive them, the military will handle their final rites."

Xingluo lowered her gaze before nodding. "I understand."

Professor Liang looked at her for a moment, then gave a faint smile. "There is no need to look so gloomy, they died fighting for humanity and protecting the people beside them their deaths will not be forgotten."

Xingluo looked back at him with some confusion, the words sounded more certain than a normal promises made during a memorial.

Professor Liang stood and adjusted his coat. "You will understand when you see it."

He moved toward the door before glancing back at her. "Get ready. Today, you will witness another one of the Human Alliance’s miracles."

Xingluo nodded, straightened her dress, and followed Professor Liang out of the room.

Several other contestants were also leaving their quarters and moving through the base under the guidance of military personnel.

Even inside the base, very few people knew what had truly happened in the residential compound, while most soldiers only knew that a serious security breach had occurred.

Professor Liang led her away from the main paths and toward a secluded building near the inner section of the base. After entering, they stopped before a sealed hall with no guards stationed outside.

He placed his hand against the scanner beside the entrance. Several lights passed across his palm before the doors slowly opened, and Xingluo followed him inside.

Death Eye and the vice commander were already waiting there, along with the captain and surviving members of Squad Hellhound.

A few contestants who had fought during the attack had also been called, and everyone stood quietly near the centre of the hall.

At the front were three crystal coffins placed side by side, Xingluo’s steps slowed when she saw the two soldiers and the military contestant lying inside them.

The doors closed behind Xingluo and Professor Liang, cutting off the noise from the rest of the base.

Death Eye waited until everyone had taken their places before walking toward the three crystal coffins.

The surviving members of Squad Hellhound stood together on one side, while Xingluo and the other contestants remained behind Professor Liang.

A dark-gold stele was set into the wall beyond the coffins. Its surface appeared empty, but countless thin lines covered its edges and continued into the floor beneath the hall.

Death Eye stopped before it and placed his palm against the centre. The lines across the stele lit up one after another, and a low vibration passed through the hall as faint light gathered around the bodies inside the coffins.

Xingluo looked toward Professor Liang. "What is that?"

"A Human Record Stele," he replied quietly. "Every major city and military base possesses one, and all of them are connected to the Eternal Human Record at the centre of the Alliance."

Death Eye opened a metal case beside the stele and removed three damaged military insignias. Two belonged to the fallen soldiers, while the third had been recovered from the contestant.

He placed them into three openings beneath his palm, and information began appearing across the stele. Their identities, ranks, battle records, and actions during the attack passed over the dark surface.

Professor Liang continued, "Anyone who dies in a recognised battle for humanity is recorded automatically. Even when their body cannot be recovered, their military mark, battle records, and the traces left at the place of death are enough to preserve their name and achievements."

"Then why are they holding a ceremony?" Xingluo asked.

"An automatic record only preserves what the Alliance can confirm. When the remains, personal insignia, complete records, and witnesses are present, the stele can preserve a much stronger impression of the person."

Death Eye raised his other hand, and the surviving members of Squad Hellhound placed their fists against their chests.

The squad captain stepped forward. "I, Captain of Squad Hellhound, confirm that these two soldiers remained at their positions after the operation became a real attack."

His voice remained steady, though his injured arm trembled slightly against his side.

"They protected the contestants under our command and continued fighting after the enemy exceeded the limits of our squad. They followed their orders until death."

The other soldiers answered together, "We bear witness."

Death Eye then looked toward the contestants, the pink-haired girl stepped forward with Han Zhen and Miao Tianhe, while Xingluo joined them after a brief pause.

"We bear witness," they said.

The stele released another pulse. Light flowed through the damaged insignias before spreading around the three coffins, and faint figures slowly formed above the crystal covers.

They resembled the three people lying inside, but their bodies were made from pale golden light.

Their faces were unclear at first, then gradually sharpened as their records and the testimony of the witnesses entered the stele.

The two soldiers stood in complete uniforms without torn armor or blood, while the contestant appeared as he had before entering the competition.

The Record had not preserved the state in which they died, but the clearest impression of who they had been.

Wuxia examined them through his Soul Perception and found no souls inside the figures. The dead had not been trapped or brought back, yet the echoes carried their mana traces, combat habits, voices, and the will they had left behind.

The three War Echoes opened their eyes, the squad captain’s breathing stopped for a moment as one soldier looked toward him and raised a fist against his chest. T

he second followed, while the contestant turned toward those who had fought beside him.

They did not possess the awareness of living people. Their movements came from the strongest intentions preserved within the Record, but several members of Squad Hellhound still lowered their heads when the soldiers saluted them.

Professor Liang looked toward Xingluo. "A complete War Echo preserves a person’s appearance, voice, combat experience, and final will. It is not their soul or a resurrection, but it allows part of what they left behind to remain."

The writing across the stele slowed before three names appeared on its surface, followed by the actions that had earned their place within the Record.

[Deaths verified.]

[They stood in defence of humanity.]

[Their names have been accepted into the Eternal Human Record.]

Their names and achievements were transmitted through the connected Record Steles across the Human Alliance. From that moment onward, any authorised stele could retrieve the record of their final battle.

The golden light surrounding the three echoes strengthened before dividing into several thin streams. Most returned to the stele, while smaller portions entered the insignias beneath Death Eye’s hand.

Professor Liang gestured toward them. "Their military marks will be placed inside this city’s Hall of Names, the stele will be able to call forth their War Echoes during future memorials."

Xingluo continued watching the figures. "Do the echoes have any other purpose?"

"The will preserved within every accepted record becomes part of the Alliance’s defensive network."

"During an invasion, a Record Stele can release that accumulated will to reinforce formations and help soldiers resist fear and mental interference."

He looked toward the three golden figures before continuing.

"Stronger War Echoes can also reproduce part of the person’s combat abilities for a short time, but that requires a far more complete record and a much stronger will impression."

The squad captain stepped closer to the coffins and saluted and the two soldiers returned the gesture.

The echoes held their salute for several seconds before breaking apart into golden light and returning to the stele while their names remained on its surface.

Death Eye removed his hand and turned toward everyone inside the hall. "They had no families waiting for them, but they did not leave this world without anyone remembering them."

His gaze moved across Squad Hellhound and the gathered contestants. "As long as the Human Alliance remains, their names and their actions will remain within the Eternal Human Record."

The soldiers saluted together, and the contestants followed a moment later.

Xingluo looked toward the three names on the stele and finally understood what Professor Liang had meant.

Their lives had ended, but the will they had shown in their final battle would remain with the Alliance.

Just as the ceremony ended, a voice suddenly sounded inside Wuxia’s mind.

His body stiffened, it was a voice he had not heard in years, yet he recognized it immediately.

Wuxia turned toward the stele and saw the faint impression of a beautiful woman standing within the remaining golden light. Unlike the other War Echoes, her eyes were fixed directly on him.

His eyes widened, but before he could speak, a powerful force seized his soul and began pulling him toward her.

The hall trembled around him as his figure distorted. Xingluo sensed the sudden change and turned toward him, but before she could react, Wuxia vanished from beside her.

Her expression changed for only a moment before Professor Liang noticed. "What happened?"

Xingluo quickly forced herself to remain calm and looked away from the stele. "Nothing, Professor, I suddenly felt a little unwell."
