Chapter 5: Beichen University
By the time they reached the classroom, Xingluo and her friends hurriedly took seats on the middle bench after seeing that the professor had not arrived yet.
Only then did they finally let out a small sigh of relief while Shen Wuxia floated nearby, still trying to shake away the dizziness from being dragged across half the campus.
But just then, the crisp sound of boots striking the floor slowly approached from outside the classroom.
A sharp-looking middle-aged man entered soon afterward, his face carrying an approachable and charming smile, yet the reaction of the class clearly said something completely different about him.
The entire classroom stood up almost instantly with frightening discipline before greeting him in perfect unison.
The man smiled back gently and signaled for them to sit, but the moment everyone settled down again, Yun Xia leaned closer to Xingluo and whispered carefully.
"Why do you think Demon Liang is smiling like this today?"
Xingluo shuddered slightly after hearing that nickname before lowering her voice as well. "How would I know, but it feels like we are going to witness another sacrificial ceremony today."
As the class continued mumbling quietly among themselves, Professor Liang looked over everyone with that same gentle smile and finally spoke. "Class, today I have prepared a small surprise for all of you."
The moment those words entered their ears, the expressions of almost every student darkened at the same time.
After studying under Professor Liang for this long, everyone understood that any surprise coming from him could never be something good.
Professor Liang seemed completely pleased with their reaction as his smile deepened slightly.
"Today, we will be holding a small competition, and whoever wins will receive a Level 70 Gold-grade weapon from me."
The classroom instantly erupted into noise after those words fell.
In Asterion, weapons were divided into nine grades: Black Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic.
Although Gold-grade weapons were not considered extremely rare in the eyes of elite families, they were still far beyond what most ordinary students could casually afford.
Unlike Tianchen University, Beichen University was mostly filled with students from commoner and poor backgrounds.
Even after completing many dangerous commissions, most of them could barely afford a decent Silver-grade weapon, and that was only after repeatedly risking their lives outside the city.
A Level 70 Gold-grade weapon was different.
For many families here, something like that was worth more than an entire year of income, and even then, such money was usually earned through blood, injuries, and missions that could easily turn fatal.
Because of that, even knowing Professor Liang’s so-called surprise was probably dangerous, the eyes of many students still lit up with uncontrollable desire.
The moment Professor Liang’s words fell, Shen Wuxia was still watching the students’ reactions when a cold chime suddenly rang inside his mind.
A translucent blue panel appeared before his eyes, its light flickering faintly as the inactive system finally showed movement again.
[System Mission Triggered.]
[Mission: Assist Anchor Luo Xingluo in obtaining victory during Professor Liang’s competition.]
[Objective: Help the Anchor achieve first place or receive Professor Liang’s reward.]
[Reward: Anchor Trust Level will increase based on performance.]
[Failure Penalty: System activation progress will slow down.]
Seeing the words before him, Shen Wuxia’s gaze instantly sharpened while his earlier irritation toward Qin Haoran was temporarily suppressed.
So this broken thing finally remembers how to speak when it needs me to work.
His eyes shifted toward Xingluo, who was still staring at Professor Liang with the same gloomy expression as the rest of the class.
For a brief moment, Shen Wuxia looked at her silently before his gaze shifted back toward Professor Liang.
Then this competition better be something I can interfere with, because before helping her win, I still need to convince her to trust me first.
Slowly the excitement died down as they understood the mission was not going to be easy and there was definitely a catch.
Seeing the class quiet down, Professor Liang’s eyes sharpened slightly as he continued speaking with the same calm smile.
"But there is one more condition. If none of you reach the baseline satisfactory result during this competition, then all rewards will be cancelled."
The students had barely reacted before his smile grew even deeper. "And for the entire upcoming semester, every single one of you will attend an extra combat training class daily at five in the morning."
Hearing this, the faces of many students instantly turned pale because they understood that Professor Liang had not given them any room to refuse.
The only way out was for someone among them to have massively improved during the holidays, but considering their backgrounds and situations, that possibility was no different from a pipe dream.
Before anyone could complain, Professor Liang suddenly clapped his hands and turned toward the door. "To the combat training grounds. Come on."
Hearing him, most students left their seats gloomily, while a few class rankers moved with a faint glint of fighting spirit in their eyes.
Xingluo also dragged her feet along with the others, and Yun Xia quickly walked beside her before asking in a low voice, "Did you make any progress, Xingluo?"
Xingluo sighed after hearing that and shook her head with a tired expression. "No, I am still stuck at Level 68."
Yun Xia patted her back gently afterward while trying to comfort her. "Do not worry, Xingluo.
Reaching this point with a C-rank talent is already not bad, and you will definitely level up a lot after your next dungeon run with Young Master Qin Haoran."
Hearing Qin Haoran’s name again and again had already put Shen Wuxia in a visibly bad mood as he floated behind them.
Why is this girl pushing her so much toward that bastard? That guy is a beast wearing human skin.
But after thinking about Xingluo’s level and talent, Shen Wuxia could only sigh silently.
Her situation was indeed mediocre because the jump from Level 1 to Level 100 was considered the easiest stage for players, while everything after the First Transformation became far more difficult.
That was also the reason most C-rank and B-rank players remained stuck near the First Transformation for their entire lives.
As for the Level 200 to Level 300 range, only a small number of B-rank players could barely reach the Second Transformation and going beyond that was even harder, especially in a resource-scarce city like theirs.
As Shen Wuxia continued thinking about this, the group soon arrived at the combat training grounds.
It was an enormous area filled with dozens of small arenas and hundreds of practice weapons, while many of the platforms were already occupied by other students training fiercely.
Some of the other arenas were already surrounded by large groups of students, many of them cheering loudly for the competitors fighting inside.
A few were even placing bets among themselves, their eyes shining with excitement as the battles continued across the platforms.
Beichen University never stopped these kinds of activities as long as they promoted growth, pressure, and competition between students.
In their eyes, even gambling, provocation, and public challenges were acceptable, so long as they pushed the students to become stronger.
Professor Liang led them toward a farther corner of the grounds before finally stopping in front of an empty arena.
He turned around slowly afterward and looked across the class with a smile that made everyone feel even more uneasy.
"Now then," he said calmly, "let me explain the rules and content of today’s competition."
