Chapter 33: The Great Cremation
Seeing the situation getting worse, Shen Wuxia’s gaze swept across the spider swarm, the corpses, and the wounds closing on the Brood mother’s body.
Then his eyes sharpened. "Fire, we need fire."
Xingluo stepped back from the crawling spiders near her boots and swung her sword down, crushing several of them beneath the blade. "How? I am not a mage, and none of your Soul Soldiers can use fire."
"We just need something to burn them," Wuxia said, still watching the swarm. "Not cast a spell."
Xingluo’s expression froze for a moment. "Then what do we use?"
Wuxia turned and looked at her silently, seeing that stare, Xingluo’s face stiffened. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Shen Wuxia’s expression did not change, but his thoughts moved quietly.
Do all beautiful girls lose brain nutrients to their face?
Xingluo’s face turned red for some reason. "Say something. Why are you staring?"
"Smart Miss Xingluo," Wuxia said calmly. "Did you forget that we bought a lot of talismans?"
"Some of them are fire talismans," Wuxia continued. "Use them properly, and setting this swarm on fire will not be difficult."
Xingluo’s face turned even redder, and she coughed once while pulling open her storage space. "I know, I was just a little distracted from fighting."
The moment she said that, one of the Brood mother’s long legs stabbed toward her from the side.
Xingluo’s pupils shrank, but before the leg could pin her down, the Panther appeared beside her and deflected it with one claw.
The impact forced the Panther back half a step, but it immediately lowered its body and roared at the Brood mother.
Xingluo clenched her teeth and pulled out three fire talismans at once.
The small spiders were still spreading from the fallen corpse bags, crawling over each other while trying to reach the injured Brood mother.
If she threw the talismans randomly, she would only burn one patch and waste the rest.
Her gaze moved across the clearing, then toward the sticky web threads covering the corpses and tree roots.
A few breaths later, she understood, xingluo rushed toward the side of the clearing while the wolves blocked the spiders chasing her feet.
She threw the first fire talisman at the nearest web-covered corpse, and flames burst open at once, swallowing the silk and crawling spiders around it.
The web burned faster than she expected, the fire spread across the corpse bag, then followed the thin strands connected to the nearby trees.
The spider swarm became chaotic immediately and some little spiders tried to rush away, while others were caught in the flames before they could scatter.
The Brood mother hissed sharply and moved toward the burning area, but the bear-shaped Soul Soldier stepped in front of it and took the impact of two spear-like legs.
Its chest cracked from the strike, but Wuxia repaired it with soul force and forced it to hold position.
Xingluo threw the second talisman toward another cluster of web bags hanging low from the trees.
The flames exploded upward, and several corpse bags caught fire before falling into the swarm below.
Burning spiders scattered across the ground, spreading fire through the moving mass like oil.
The foul smell of burnt flesh and web filled the clearing, Xingluo’s face twisted, but she did not stop.
The Brood mother opened its mouth and tried to suck in the nearby spiders again, yet most of them had already been burned into black shells.
The few it managed to consume were not enough to close the wound torn open by the Panther.
Wuxia saw the difference at once. "It cannot heal properly now."
Xingluo’s grip tightened around her sword. "Then we push."
The bull charged straight into the Brood mother’s front, forcing its massive body to shift back, while the bear slammed from the side and blocked the legs trying to strike Xingluo.
The Panther disappeared into the fog for a moment, no longer attacking directly.
The Brood mother seemed to notice the missing threat and turned slightly, but Xingluo threw the third talisman at the ground beneath its abdomen.
Flames burst open under its body and the Brood mother screeched and lifted itself higher, but that movement exposed the joints where its legs connected to its body.
Xingluo rushed in and cut at one joint with all her strength, the sword bit deep, and black-green blood splashed across her arm.
Before the Brood mother could crush her, the Panther appeared from behind it in a blur and tore one of its rear legs completely apart.
The Brood mother’s body tilted violently, Wuxia immediately forced the bull forward, and the heavy Soul Soldier smashed into the wounded side with its horns lowered.
At the same time, the bear rose on its hind legs and slammed both paws down onto another leg and the joint cracked.
The Brood mother tried to drag itself back, but the Panther attacked again, biting into the torn abdomen and ripping open the wound further.
This time, no swarm came to save it, the spiders around them had either burned to ash or were being crushed by the wolves before they could reach their mother.
Xingluo stepped through the smoke, dodged a desperate stab from one remaining leg, and drove her sword into the cracked joint the bear had damaged.
The leg broke under the combined pressure, the Brood mother collapsed lower, its huge hairy body slamming into the ground hard enough to shake the clearing.
It still struggled, dragging itself forward with the remaining legs, but its movements had become uneven and weak.
Wuxia did not give it room to recover, the bull pinned its front, the bear crushed down from the side, and the Panther tore across its throat from below.
Xingluo found the opening created by the Panther and stabbed her sword deep into the same wound.
The Brood mother released one last sharp hiss, but the sound broke halfway as its body finally lost strength, its legs curled inward one by one and then its massive body tipped forward.
Xingluo’s face changed when she saw the hairy corpse falling toward her, and she hurriedly threw herself to the side.
The Brood mother crashed into the ground where she had been standing a moment earlier, sending dust, burnt web, and dead spiders scattering across the clearing.
The moment the Broodmother died, a golden light shone around Xingluo again, followed by a notification ringing inside her mind.
[Congratulations. You have reached Level 78.]
For a moment, Xingluo stared at the panel without moving, then she finally jumped in place with excitement, completely forgetting the burnt webs, dead spiders, and disgusting corpse lying nearby.
"Level 78..."
Her eyes moved across her status panel, and her expression became even brighter, the path to Level 79 was already almost halfway filled.
Part of it came from killing the Brood mother, and part of it came from the beasts they had killed during the journey toward the inner area.
Even the experience from beasts killed by Wuxia’s Soul Soldiers seemed to transfer to her somehow. Sadly, the soldiers still could not hunt independently.
First, they needed Wuxia’s support and control in battle, and second, none of them could move more than thirty meters away from him.
Still, even with those restrictions, the speed was already terrifying, Xingluo’s eyes slowly brightened as her thoughts began drifting.
Maybe—
Before the thought could fully form, a strong wave of nausea suddenly hit her. Xingluo’s expression changed, and she pressed one hand against her forehead.
Her head started hurting almost immediately, and her vision blurred as the golden light around her body faded.
"Xingluo?"
Wuxia noticed something wrong at once and turned toward her, she tried to answer but her legs suddenly lost strength.
The sword slipped slightly from her hand, and before she could steady herself, her body fell to the ground with a heavy thud.
