Without waiting for the footsteps to enter the elevator, Lin Ye suddenly burst out from beneath the old man’s corpse and hurled two dining knives toward the elevator exit.
The knives struck the necks of two Armed Personnel with pinpoint accuracy, catching them completely off guard. Lin Ye used their bodies as shields to block the bullets from the armed personnel behind them, but the enemy showed no regard for their fallen comrades and kept firing relentlessly in his direction.
Lin Ye grabbed a rifle from one of the Armed Personnel and used the corpses as cover while returning fire. It only took him half a magazine to kill off the remaining Armed Personnel.
‘Good thing they were wearing bulletproof vests, or I’d be dead for sure.’
The bullets from these rifles could pierce a human body easily. Without the bulletproof vests on the corpses, Lin Ye would have been lucky to just take them all down with him at best.
These people seemed to be the organization’s Armed Personnel, making up an eight-man squad. Lin Ye didn’t rush to leave; instead, he scavenged some useful supplies from the bodies.
The Armed Personnel didn’t carry any medical items, so Lin Ye had to use a dagger to cut off some cloth strips and fashion makeshift bandages to stop the bleeding.
“Cough, cough……”
Lin Ye limped out of the elevator. A piece of shrapnel had lodged itself in his left leg. He couldn’t put any weight on it, or else the injury would only get worse.
‘I need to find some medical supplies first, then I can check out the situation here.’
The elevator connected to a hall, and from that hall, several metal corridors branched off to other areas.
Lin Ye swept his gaze across the hall’s walls. There were no signs or facility maps anywhere.
He could only rely on his understanding of the organization’s architecture to pick a corridor that might lead to an Infirmary.
Lin Ye moved slowly down the corridor. He didn’t believe the facility had fallen just because of those Armed Personnel. There had to be other dangers lurking here.
Before long, Lin Ye reached the end of the corridor. It connected to some common areas, but none of them held the Infirmary he was looking for.
This seemed to be a staff rest zone, with a Cafeteria and a Rest Area.
‘Don’t tell me this place doesn’t even have an Infirmary?’
If the facility had any medical-related functions, the Infirmary would probably be located in a dedicated section.
Blood oozing from his wounds had soaked through his prison garb. It was too late to turn back now, so Lin Ye had no choice but to push deeper into the rest area. The staff dorms might have some basic medical supplies.
Soon, Lin Ye made his way near the staff dorms. But at the entrance, he found a barricade built from cabinets and clutter.
The barricade had already been destroyed. Something had torn through the metal cabinets, leaving a gap. Near the gap, Lin Ye spotted bullet holes and bloodstains.
“Cough, cough……”
Even though whatever had broken through the barricade might still be inside the dorms, Lin Ye had to go in now. If he didn’t, he’d have to restart the simulation before long.
Lin Ye crawled through the barricade and crept into the staff dorms, keeping his footsteps low. The living conditions here were pretty good; each room was a private unit.
But some rooms were a total mess, as if someone had been searching for something.
When he got to the fourth room, he finally found a medical kit under the bed. It was fully stocked, more than enough to perform a minor surgery.
Lin Ye closed the door of the dorm room. He was just about to take off the bulletproof vest he had on over his prison garb when he heard a faint rustling sound in the hallway.
It was the sound of something crawling slowly across the floor.
Lin Ye picked up his rifle and aimed it at the door. He wasn’t sure if whatever was out there had noticed him. If possible, he wanted to deal with his wounds first before taking on whatever was outside.
Thump!
The door was suddenly slammed open. A creature that looked like some kind of fish lunged into the room and leaped toward Lin Ye’s head, snapping its jaws.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Lin Ye fired at the Strange Fish, but he didn’t empty the magazine. That fish didn’t seem like the thing that had torn through the barricade.
The fish’s head was blown apart by Lin Ye’s shots, but it didn’t stop. It kept writhing and crawling toward him.
Lin Ye grabbed a nearby cabinet and smashed it down on the fish, crushing its body. Just then, three more Strange Fish burst into the dorm, all of them lunging at Lin Ye’s upper body.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
This time, Lin Ye emptied his magazine straight at the fish. He could feel they were trying to get close to him.
His aim was true. Every bullet hit a different part of each fish.
The first two fish had their bodies torn apart by bullets, but the third one suddenly changed direction mid-air, dodging the shots and landing on the nearby bed.
Before his rifle magazine ran out, Lin Ye had already drawn his pistol from his waist and emptied that magazine at the third fish.
A shadow shot out from the fish’s belly, but just as it emerged, it got hit by three bullets.
While firing with his right hand, Lin Ye used his left to draw another pistol from his waist. If anything else jumped out, he could still switch magazines one-handed.
After the shadow was hit by the bullets, everything went quiet around it. Lin Ye walked to the door and glanced outside. The corridor was dead silent. No other monsters.
Lin Ye picked up the medical kit and found a cleaner dorm room to start treating his wounds.
It took him half an hour to patch himself up. In the process, he lost more blood, which left him feeling a bit dizzy.
Lin Ye went back to the dorm where he had killed the fish monsters, wanting to examine their bodies.
But the corpses were gone. Even the fish he had crushed with the cabinet had vanished, leaving not even a scrap of flesh behind.
‘Are these monsters collecting their fallen comrades? Then why aren’t they coming after me?’
Lin Ye thought it over for a few seconds before turning and leaving the staff dorms. He returned to the elevator area, and the bodies of the Armed Personnel were gone too.
‘……I should have cut off some corpse fragments to carry with me.’
Lin Ye headed for the middle metal corridor, wanting to gather some information about this place first.
He still had no idea what this facility was even for.
At the end of the corridor, Lin Ye found a large elevator lobby. The lobby had multiple elevators, much bigger than the ones before. They all led deeper down, but they didn’t seem to go to the same area.
Lin Ye didn’t rush into an elevator. He wanted to go back to the hall first and gather information from other areas.
But just as he turned around, he saw a pitch-black sphere filling the entire corridor in the distance. On the surface of that sphere, organs from various creatures were sprouting.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Lin Ye fired a few shots at the sphere. The bullets easily pierced into it, but instead of stopping, the sphere started accelerating toward the elevator lobby.
‘Damn it, what the hell is that thing now?’
Lin Ye had no choice but to retreat into an elevator behind him and close the doors before the sphere could reach him.
