The survivors gathered together and began discussing the specific plan to escape the city district.

“Are there any cars here that can be driven?”

Lin Ye looked at Jeffrey. The mist was extremely dangerous, and if they had a vehicle that could isolate them from the mist, their chances of survival would greatly increase.

“If no one drove them off, there should be a few prison transport vehicles in the underground parking lot. One prison transport vehicle can fit all of us.”

A prison guard standing nearby chimed in.

“That’s right, and all the drivers are prison guards. I know where the keys to the prison transport vehicles are.”

Jeffrey added.

“What about weapons? There should be a place in the prison where weapons are stored, right?”

If he could get enough ammunition, Lin Ye could solve most of the problems.

“There should still be some stock in the storage room. I can lead the way.”

Another prison guard spoke up.

“Great. First, we’ll go get the weapons and keys. Then, we’ll head to the underground parking lot to check the condition of the prison transport vehicles and confirm the road situation. If there’s no problem, we’ll drive out of the city district tomorrow. Is anyone familiar with the local terrain? A map would work too.”

Lin Ye quickly settled on the action plan.

“I have a city map on my phone.”

A survivor spoke up.

“Good. Tomorrow, we’ll escape the city district at the time mentioned in the broadcast. But we’re not going to meet up with them. Instead, we’ll just drive straight out.”

Lin Ye took the phone and quickly memorized the city map.

“Why?”

“Wouldn’t it be better to have more people?”

“Yeah, I want to go to the convoy to find my family.”

“That’s right, we should still go meet up with the convoy.”

...

The survivors didn’t understand why Lin Ye didn’t want to join the convoy.

“First of all, the convoy you mentioned only exists in a single broadcast message. It might not even be real. And even if it is, it might not last until tomorrow morning.

Second, the prison is on the edge of the city district. If we want to meet up with the convoy, we’ll have an extra step, wasting a lot of time. Every second wasted in the mist lowers our chances of survival.

Finally, if there really is a convoy, tomorrow, the convoy and other survivors will make a huge commotion. Getting close to them will be very dangerous. It’s better to take this opportunity to escape.

If anyone wants to go to the convoy to find their family, you can split off from us. I’ll leave you with enough supplies.”

Lin Ye replied in a tone so calm it left no room for argument. The other survivors had to shut up, because none of them dared to act alone.

Seeing no objections, Lin Ye selected a few prison guards to go with him to the storage room to search for weapons.

“I’ll leave this place to you.”

Lin Ye said to Jeffrey.

“No problem. You guys be careful.”

Jeffrey replied solemnly.

Lin Ye led the group through the window and jumped into the mist. This time, they brought a rope, and everyone held onto a part of it.

The prison guard who knew the location of the storage room led the way. Lin Ye followed behind him, holding a kitchen knife, ready to deal with any monsters lurking in the prison.

But until they reached the storage room holding the firearms, they didn’t encounter a single monster.

Lin Ye found it a bit strange, but compared to the guns in the storage room, it wasn’t that important.

“Great! No one’s been here!”

The prison guard who opened the door let out an excited voice.

Neat rows of brand-new guns lined the shelves, and boxes of ammunition were piled in the corner of the storage room. This place was practically a small arsenal.

“There are handcarts over there. Load them up. We can make a few more trips and clear this place out.”

Lin Ye took a box of rifle bullets from a crate and began pressing the bullets, one by one, into a magazine.

With these weapons, he felt a bit more confident about his escape plan for tomorrow.

After three round trips, Lin Ye and the others finally transported all the weapons back to the Back Kitchen of the Cafeteria. Throughout the process, they didn’t encounter any monsters, as if all those creatures from before had simply vanished.

After moving the guns, Lin Ye led another group to find the keys to the prison transport vehicles. The prison transport vehicles were parked in the underground parking lot. They took the keys and found the staircase leading down to the parking lot.

Before they even went down the stairs, they smelled a strange odor.

It was a very complex smell, as if it were a blend of many different scents.

‘I knew it wouldn’t be that easy. So this is what was waiting for us down here.’

Lin Ye didn’t plan on searching for a vehicle outside. There were monsters in the mist too, and maybe things even more dangerous than monsters. Rather than searching outside for a car of unknown location, it was better to find a way to deal with what was down here.

The prison guards prepared for battle. Lin Ye turned on a flashlight and took the lead into the pitch-black stairwell.

The stairs extended downward. When they were about halfway down, they suddenly noticed that the passage below was covered in a layer of dark green substance. That substance had turned the staircase into some kind of nest for something.

‘This feels really familiar...’

Lin Ye thought about going back to make a simple flamethrower, but unfortunately, he didn’t have anything he could use as fuel.

The Infirmary only had a small amount of material that could be used to make Molotov cocktails, and he’d already used it all.

“Wait here for me. I’ll go down alone to take a look. That way, we’ll make less noise. And if there’s any problem, I can escape in time.”

Lin Ye turned to say to the prison guards.

The prison guards didn’t object. After the previous battles, they knew Lin Ye was right.

Lin Ye, carrying a rifle, continued down the stairs. He needed to confirm whether those prison transport vehicles were still usable. If they weren’t, they would have to go outside to find a usable vehicle.

The underground parking lot had been transformed by that dark green substance into a cavern-like underground space. Lin Ye moved through the caverns. He knew the layout of the underground parking lot; it wasn’t even a maze for him.

Soon, Lin Ye found the prison transport vehicles in a corner of the underground parking lot. But inside those prison transport vehicles, there were piles of dark green egg-shaped objects of various sizes.

‘...Would anyone really want to drive one of those prison transport vehicles?’

Lin Ye lowered his steps and approached the car door. The inside of the prison transport vehicle looked fine, but the stuff inside it was enough to make anyone not want to get close.

‘Looks like I’ll have to clean this place out.’

Lin Ye planned to go back first to bring a load of weapons, then clean out the monsters here.

Just as Lin Ye was about to leave, he suddenly heard a faint noise. The sound seemed to come from the carriage underneath one of the prison transport vehicles.

The carriage door was pushed open a crack. A sixteen-year-old girl with short black hair, wearing a light orange dress, crawled out from inside.

“...Why are you hiding in a place like this? You do know what’s on top of that, right?”

Lin Ye lowered his rifle. He had thought the carriage was also filled with those egg-shaped objects.

“If I hadn’t hidden in there, you wouldn’t have seen me.”

Little Guardian replied, her voice weak.
