Chapter 173: Chapter 120: Scout Captain 2

Judging by the Jackal Wolfman’s equipment, their Transmigrator City Lord must be doing quite well. No wonder they could so brazenly bully the Natives in the Wasteland.

After a moment of observation, Li Ziyu turned to the Scout Captain and gave him a few kicks with his foot. The man showed no reaction. His breathing grew weaker, the rise and fall of his chest much shallower than before.

Yan Ji floated directly over the Jackal Wolfman, looking down at him. She then drifted to Li Ziyu’s side and whispered in his ear, "He’s faking it. Jackal Wolfmen are very cunning."

Li Ziyu raised an eyebrow. ’He’s certainly got a Wild Beast’s instincts, that was pretty convincing. If Yan Ji hadn’t pointed it out, I might have actually been fooled.’ Stroking his chin, he said, "This one is about to die? Looks like he’s useless then. Send him on his way."

The moment he spoke, a Skeleton Warrior stepped forward, saber in hand, ready to finish off the Scout Captain.

The sound of scraping feet echoed on the floor as the Skeleton approached. A chill gripped the feigning Scout Captain’s heart; he knew his act was up. His eyes darted back and forth before snapping open. With a roar directed at the Undead, he sprang up as if on coils and tackled it.

The Jackal Wolfman smashed the poor Low Level Warrior into a pile of shattered bones and snatched its Bone Saber. He scanned his surroundings warily, but his body froze when he took in the scene.

Dozens of Skeleton Warriors watched him in silence. By the doorway stood a towering Skeleton Ox Demon, a Totem Pole in its grasp. From the shadows, a Dark Skeleton peeked out, observing with curiosity. Beyond the Skeletons floated a host of ghastly, green-glowing Wandering Souls. And finally, he saw a Human—a Human with a mocking smile on his face.

CLAP CLAP CLAP.

Li Ziyu raised his hands and began to clap. "Tsk, tsk. Impressive. You’re quick on your feet for a scout. So, what’s your next move?"

The Scout Captain broke out in a cold sweat again. He snarled, "Stand aside! Let me go!"

Li Ziyu spread his hands, gesturing to the surrounding Skeletons and Wandering Souls. "Threatening me?" he scoffed. "You really think you can just walk out of here?"

The Jackal Wolfman pointed his Bone Saber at Li Ziyu and said viciously, "I might die, but I can take you with me!"

"Oh, I’m terrified," Li Ziyu said nonchalantly. "Why don’t you give it a try?"

As soon as the words were out, his expression darkened. "Kill him," he said softly.

At his command, the surrounding Skeleton Undead surged toward the Jackal Wolfman. Even the Dark Skeleton leaped out in excitement, waving its arms and ready to join the fray.

"AARGH—"

CLANG. THUD.

"I’m sorry! I was wrong! Please forgive my ignorance! Don’t kill me!" Truly befitting a captain—the roar, the toss of the saber, dropping to both knees, raising his hands high, and begging for mercy were all one fluid motion. The Jackal Wolfman surrendered without a moment’s hesitation.

The Skeleton Warriors had just reached him and had yet to even raise their sabers when they stopped. Li Ziyu had raised a hand, halting their advance. The Dark Skeleton turned its head to watch, its jawbone clacking open and shut as if sighing.

And why wouldn’t it sigh? From the moment of its creation, it hadn’t had a single chance to fight. It craved battle, craved the feeling of blood splashing across its bones!

"A wise man knows when to yield, and I’d say you’re a very wise man," Li Ziyu said with a satisfied smile.

After dispatching the Undead to intercept the Jackal Wolfman scouts, Li Ziyu had asked the Fox Maidens to tell him about their race.

In Mei Ji’s words, the Jackal Wolfman race were the thugs and bullies of the Beastman world—fierce, cunning, and greedy, but also cowardly and utterly devoid of integrity.

Back in the era of the Balfeite Kingdom, when the Beastman races were united, life was good. The Jackal Wolfmen were numerous enough to be considered a third-tier race and mostly worked as Mercenaries. Whenever someone needed help with plundering, murder, arson, or general mayhem, they were the ones to call.

During the Komeideng War, the Balfeite Beastman Kingdom was drawn into the conflict and dispatched many legions. They hadn’t planned on conscripting the Jackal Wolfmen, but the opportunistic creatures formed their own legion and insisted on joining the fight.

How to put it... they weren’t particularly capable, but they fought fiercely in favorable winds. You could just barely call them a regular army.

It was worth noting, however, that Mei Ji didn’t know the Jackal Wolfmen had a Firearms Team. After all, even in standard-issue Armor, they still looked more like street thugs than the heroic, courageous Orc Warriors.

With Mei Ji’s information, Li Ziyu understood. The original Jackal Wolfmen probably weren’t very strong—on par with the Headhunter Race or the Lizardmen. But they had the support of a Transmigrator, and Transmigrators weren’t exactly a reasonable bunch. They could come up with all sorts of things.

The Firearms must have been a Weapon brought by their Transmigrator City Lord.

Watching the Scout Captain’s practiced surrender, Li Ziyu knew Mei Ji had been right. They might have advanced Weapons, but their fundamental nature—craven and cowardly—remained unchanged. Frighten them a little, and they showed their true colors. Their loyalty to that Transmigrator probably wasn’t very high either.

Li Ziyu walked past the Scout Captain. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the Jackal Wolfman bare its fangs as if to attack, but it restrained itself. It likely understood that even if it succeeded in attacking their master while surrounded by a horde of Undead, it wouldn’t survive. And so, it gave up.
