Chapter 171: Chapter 119: Reconnaissance Squad (3)
As members of the Beast Head Race, Jackal Wolfmen retained the habits of Wild Beasts. They trusted their intuition—their sixth sense—believing it to be a warning from their Ancestors.
"Captain, what do we do?" a Jackal Wolfman asked in a low growl, using a series of wolf-like calls only they could understand.
"We’ve been discovered. We can’t go any further," the Scout Captain responded at once, preparing to retreat.
"But we haven’t found the Undeads’ lair. How are we supposed to explain this to the Lord City Lord when we get back?" another Jackal Wolfman asked.
The Scout Captain scanned his surroundings while slowly backing away. "The City Lord will understand," he said.
He was here to gather intelligence, but he had no intention of throwing his life away for it. ’Not even if the City Lord himself gave the order.’
Since the Scout Captain had spoken, the other Jackal Wolfmen said no more. They followed him as he slowly backed away, intending to withdraw first and figure out the rest later.
Their retreat was clearly spotted by the Wandering Souls in the sky. They immediately signaled the Undead below. The soil churned as, one by one, Skeleton Undead rose from the ground and charged toward the Jackal Wolfmen.
"Retreat!"
Seeing that the Undead far outnumbered his squad, the Scout Captain didn’t hesitate for a second. He yelled, turned, and ran. The other Jackal Wolfmen, who were already on edge, did the same.
WHOOSH—
He had barely taken two steps when his ears twitched. Hearing a whistle cut through the air, he glanced up at the sky. A nearly imperceptible black dot was falling, growing larger by the second.
"WHIMPER..."
White Bone Long Arrows pierced their bodies, pinning them to the ground. The impaled Jackal Wolfmen, not yet dead, let out pained whimpers as they struggled in vain.
The sight made the Scout Captain’s pupils dilate. He pushed himself to run even faster, howling a warning to his squad, "Archers! Dodge!"
Arrows rained down from the sky like a shower of falling stars. While the Jackal Wolfmen did have night vision, it was far inferior to the Undead’s. There were always some who couldn’t dodge in time, and once a Long Arrow found its mark, there was no hope of escape.
Still, the Jackal Wolfmen were exceptionally sharp. They had sensed the danger early, and their retreat was decisive. As a result, most of the arrows fired by the Skeleton Longbowmen missed their mark. The Scout Captain was just about to escape their range.
The Wandering Souls in the sky grew anxious. ’The Master of the Undead sent a force of eleven hundred Undead for this! He entrusted them to us to wipe out these Jackal Wolfman scouts in one fell swoop. If we let them get away, how will we answer for it? No. We have to stop them.’
Two of the Wandering Souls exchanged a look, then let out a piercing shriek in unison as they dove toward the Scout Captain.
’What is that!’
The shriek from the sky sent alarm bells ringing in the Scout Captain’s head. A terrible feeling washed over him. He instinctively looked up just in time to see two balls of green light hurtling toward him.
As they drew closer, he could finally see them clearly. They were two Wandering Souls with ferocious faces and rotting bodies. Their flesh was withered, and in many places, the decay was so advanced that it revealed the Skeletons beneath.
Even for a fierce Jackal Wolfman, the sudden appearance of these two creatures was enough to startle him. His body froze for an instant, and in that moment, the two Wandering Souls passed through him without hesitation.
The Scout Captain was paralyzed. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to move—he couldn’t. An indescribable terror bloomed within him. At the same time, his body felt as if it had been flash-frozen by a block of ice, his blood on the verge of solidifying.
The feeling lasted only a moment before the Scout Captain regained control. He paid no mind to the two terrifying Wandering Souls and was about to continue his escape when an arrow flew in and pierced his shoulder blade. The impact sent him stumbling forward two steps, and the arrow’s shaft drove deep into the ground.
"ARGH—"
