Chapter 170: Chapter 119: Reconnaissance Squad (2)
"Don’t blame yourself. You’re a Wandering Soul—you don’t even have a brain. That’s far worse than just having a rigid mind," the first Human Ghost to speak said, offering his heartfelt consolation.
A Jackal Wolfman running below suddenly stopped, looking around in confusion. He thought he’d faintly heard voices moments before. After a quick scan revealed nothing unusual, he heard his companions urging him on and hurried to catch up.
’Flying is so much faster than running!’
The two Wandering Souls who had slipped away early, leaving their comrades behind to continue surveillance and seize the initiative, were filled with emotion. ’Before we became Wandering Souls, our Speed probably couldn’t even match the Jackal Wolfmen. But now, after becoming Wandering Souls, surpassing them is as easy as blinking.’
They flew quickly back to the Undead Fortress, spotted Li Ziyu’s figure on the roof of the main building, and hurriedly descended.
Li Ziyu was leaning on the battlements, gazing at the night view of the distant Wraith Mountain Range, when two Wandering Souls suddenly appeared beside him, kneeling on one knee.
"Hm? What is it?" Li Ziyu turned his head to ask the two Wandering Souls who had just descended from the sky.
"Master of the Undead, we’ve discovered the enemy’s scouts," one of the Wandering Souls reported.
"Scouts? How many, and how far are they?" Li Ziyu’s expression turned grim as he asked seriously.
"Ten Jackal Wolfmen, five Earth Wolves. They’re about five kilometers away from us." The Wandering Soul thought for a moment; after becoming a Wandering Soul, his perception of distance had weakened considerably.
A glint flashed in Li Ziyu’s eyes. He wasn’t too concerned about the scouting Jackal Wolfmen, but he was thrilled by the Wandering Souls’ detection range. Five kilometers was enough to give him advance warning of many things; the Skeleton Undeads’ scouting range was nowhere near that far.
’They’re Jackal Wolfmen, so there’s no doubt they were sent by the other Transmigrator. He’s so aggressive; of course he wouldn’t just ignore the discovery of Undead. Sending a Reconnaissance Squad is a perfectly normal move.’
’Now that we’ve found them, I can’t just let them report back so easily.’
’It’s just one Reconnaissance Squad. If I set an ambush with 1,000 Skeleton Undead, that should be more than enough to finish them off, right?’
At this thought, Li Ziyu immediately summoned the Skeleton Undead and had the Wandering Souls who brought the report lead them to set up an ambush along the Jackal Wolfmen scouts’ expected path.
"Master of the Undead, rest assured, we guarantee we will complete the mission!" the two reporting Wandering Souls declared with great confidence, patting their chests.
"Mm, I’m leaving it to you." Li Ziyu nodded, looking at the two Wandering Souls.
Mei Ji suddenly floated to his side and whispered in his ear, "Master, that isn’t wise."
Li Ziyu turned his head in surprise, looked at Mei Ji, and asked in confusion, "Is there a problem? Are Jackal Wolfmen so tough one of them can take on a hundred of mine?"
’It’s true that Skeleton Undead aren’t part of any Combat Sequence and are the most Low Level Undead, but the sheer numbers are on my side. It’s 1,000 versus 10. Even if you include the Earth Wolves, the enemy only has 15 members. How could I possibly fail to take them down?’ Li Ziyu couldn’t believe it.
’If Jackal Wolfmen were that ferocious, they would have conquered the Wasteland long ago.’
Mei Ji shook her head, her red lips parting as she spoke in a charmingly delicate voice, "What I mean is, while the Undead are powerful, they might not be able to encircle that squad of Jackal Wolfmen. You would be very troubled if they managed to escape, wouldn’t you, Master?"
Only then did Li Ziyu remember that the charming beauty before him was a former noble of the Beastman Empire and had a very deep understanding of the Beastmen in the Wasteland. Hearing her implication, it seemed that getting rid of the Jackal Wolfman Reconnaissance Squad wouldn’t be as easy as he thought.
He really didn’t know much about the Races of this Otherworld, so he had no choice but to ask Mei Ji, "Then tell me, what should we do to take down the Jackal Wolfmen?"
Mei Ji gave a soft laugh and turned to the valiant Ice Princess. Of the four Fox Maidens, Ice Princess was the true master of combat; the battlefield Experience of the other three paled in comparison to hers.
Seeing this, Ice Princess floated to Li Ziyu’s side, bowed slightly, and spoke in a clear, cold voice, "Jackal Wolfmen are excellent trackers, extremely sensitive to all sorts of smells, and possess a strong intuition for danger. They are also adept at night combat. If Master has the Undead lie in ambush midway, they will surely be detected."
Li Ziyu nodded, gesturing for her to continue. Ice Princess went on, "I suggest Master also dispatch Longbowmen. When the enemy discovers the ambush and prepares to flee, we can use that moment of unpreparedness to snipe them."
"Wouldn’t it be better to just send the Longbowmen directly?" Li Ziyu asked, puzzled.
’If the ambush is useless, why bother with the extra step? I could just have the Longbowmen hide in the shadows, and once they spot the enemy, open fire. Problem solved.’
Ice Princess shook her head and explained, "A plan within a plan is more reliable. Jackal Wolfmen are not easy to deal with. Their running Speed is very fast. If we only send Longbowmen, it will be easy for them to escape."
’Alright, better to take good advice.’
Li Ziyu didn’t know much about Jackal Wolfmen himself, but the Fox Maidens knew them very well, so he decided to listen to them. He dispatched an additional 100 Longbowmen to go with the Skeleton Undead.
...
「Under the moonlight.」
The Jackal Wolfman Reconnaissance Squad moved quickly along the tracks left by the Undead. The Scout Captain at the very front halted abruptly, his dim yellow eyes staring warily ahead as the hackles on his back stood on end.
’Danger ahead!’
He raised a claw, and the team members behind him also stopped, observing their surroundings with their noses twitching constantly. They smelled a familiar scent.
"Undead..." The Scout Captain bared his teeth, revealing a set of filthy Tusks, and let out a low growl to warn his team.
Although everything looked normal ahead, the smell and the bristling fur on their backs made them realize that something was hidden within the calm.
