Chapter 374: Symphony Of Death
[Hospital.]
In one of the high-security wards reserved for tournament combatants, the air was heavy.
"Don’t worry, Buck. Everything will be okay." Eve said with a small smile, staring at Buck on the bed, who was busy staring at the ceiling.
"I am alright, Captain... I am just angry. Angry that I can’t get my revenge." He muttered, his fists clenched tightly against the pristine white sheets. His body was a map of brutal, lingering injuries from his encounter in the arena.
Eve sighed. She pulled her chair slightly closer. "Are you sure Jessica was the one who massacred that Village?" She asked in a low voice.
Buck’s eyes snapped to hers, wild and bloodshot. "I know she is the one! I saw her!! She slaughtered everyone! Including children! You weren’t there so you won’t understand!!" Buck yelled at her, his voice cracking as the horrific memories of the burning village overwhelmed his senses.
Eve was taken aback, staring at him in surprise. The raw agony in his voice was undeniable.
Noticing his words was a bit harsh, the fire in his eyes dimmed, and lowered his gaze to his heavily bandaged legs: "I am sorry."
Eve stared at him, and exhaled, releasing the tension in her own shoulders. She understood the blinding rage of survival all too well. "Don’t worry about this issue, Master teacher Keegan is investigating it." She said, stood up, and walked towards the door.
"You need rest." She added.
"Captain." Buck muttered in a low voice, a lingering plea for validation in his tone, staring at Eve, who opened the door.
WHOOSH!
"....?!"
All the trials, and death doors she faced on earth have made sure to increase her senses to any sign of danger. It wasn’t conscious thought, but pure, ingrained survival instinct. Without a second, she leaped backward, performing a flawless evasive maneuver as a serrated, dark-steel sword plunged right through the door from the outside, missing her throat by mere millimeters.
"This?" Buck was stunned, sitting up abruptly in his hospital bed, but the severe internal injuries from the battle with Jessica made him growled in pain, his face contorting in agony.
Eve immediately shifted into a combat stance, her eyes narrowing as she assessed the threat. "You need to rest, we will wait for the mages to reach Galaxy City to heal you..." Eve said, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper, staring at five Ninjas, who shattered the door into shrapnel and walked inside.
"Leave them to me!" She flicked her wrist, as the elegant, wooden frame of her guzheng appeared instantly in her arms.
The assassins’ leader locked eyes with her, his gaze empty of all humanity. "Captain of Eagle Academy, and Buck! Kill!"
The five killers shot towards them with terrifying, synchronized speed, their swords flashing under the sterile room light.
"Underestimating yourselves!!"
DING!
Eve played a single, hyper-compressed note, infusing her energy into the instrument. And the next moment, a huge, concussive sound waves burst out from the instrument, visually distorting the air in the room, smashing heavily on the five men, throwing them right outside the room and back into the corridor.
"Who are those guys?! Why are they after us?!" Buck asked, panic lacing his voice as he struggled against his broken body, and his eyes widened in sudden realization:
"Did Jessica send them?!!"
Eve was silent for a moment, analyzing the force required to withstand her sonic blast without suffering broken bones. She lightly shook her head: "Jessica is only a student, just like us... These guys are all Lv400. How can she mobilize five Lv400? Stay put and don’t jump into conclusions." She said, her instincts taking over as she bravely walked out of the room to hold the chokepoint.
"This?!"
Eve was stunned. She turned to the right side of the hallway, her blood turning to ice, seeing dead bodies of Nurses, Doctors, patients and Civilians... The once-pristine neutral ground was a slaughterhouse. She shakily turned to her left, seeing the same scene, dead bodies everywhere, killed in the worst way possible, their lives entirely snuffed out without a single alarm being triggered.
"You monsters!!" She screamed at the five assassins, her composure shattering at the sheer, senseless massacre of innocents.
"This kid is a little strong." One assassin said, casually getting back to his feet, dusting off his dark uniform. Despite taking a point-blank sonic attack from Eve, there was not a single scratch on his body.
"If given time, she will become a headache in the future..." The second added, his eyes coldly calculating her potential.
"Then let’s kill them both and get out of here... There are still more people to kill." The third growled impatiently, and shot forward with blinding speed, the rest following in a lethal wedge formation behind him.
"You!! I will kill all of you!!!"
DING! DING! DING!
Eve instantly went into a desperate frenzy, her fingers flying across the strings fast enough to draw blood. She was sending countless, razor-sharp sound waves towards the ninjas, intending to shred their organs. But to her profound shock, she watched as they shattered everything with their swords.
’Impossible?! How could they block sound?’ She thought in absolute shock, realizing her advantage had been completely neutralized.
"DIE!!!"
The first assassin leaped towards her, closing the distance in a microsecond, his serrated sword thrusting right to her skull with lethal precision.
’Shit!! These guys are all Lv400! I am only Lv200.’ She thought, staring death in the face, rising her weapon to block the attack, knowing her wooden instrument would be cleaved in half along with her head.
BOOOOM!!!
"....?!"
Everyone violently froze. The surviving assassins and Eve watched in sheer disbelief as the man in mid-air abruptly flew towards the far end of the hallway, his body smashing into the reinforced concrete wall with bone-shattering force, dead.
With deep confusion, they all turned to the side, seeing a beautiful blonde hair lady, walking casually towards them through the carnage. Dressed in elegant, flowing robes that spoke of nobility, in her hand was a breathtaking, divine golden guzheng.
"...?!"
Eve was completely stunned, her breath catching in her throat as she felt the crushing depth of the woman’s energy.
"My dear, you played a beautiful song... I am impressed." She stopped elegantly before the stunned group, her presence alone suffocating the assassins’ aura:
"Oh, this is the first time we’re meeting. Let me introduce myself. I am--"
"--Lady Mariana Hank. The Guild Leader of Guardian guild in Eagle empire! A Lv400 All-bloodlines!" Eve completed her words, her eyes wide with absolute awe and reverence.
"Oh? It seems you know me? Fufufufu, am I that famous?" Mariana asked, giggling lightly behind her sleeve, then her expression instantly took a 360-degree turn, morphing from a polite noblewoman to a terrifying predator.
"Now... How dare you attack children from the eagle empire?! Are you all tired of living?!" She yelled, her voice echoing with authority, and placed her hand gracefully on her golden instrument.
"This is bad! Don’t let her pull the string!" The assassins’ leader screamed, recognizing the threat before them.
The four remaining Ninjas shot forward, burning their life force to increase their speed, but it was already far too late.
DING!
WHOOSH!
A single, imperceptible note was struck. The golden sound waves moved past them faster than the speed of light. The four assassins froze in absolute horror, their bodies paralyzed mid-stride, as the catastrophic waves completely bypassed them and smashed into the wall at the other end.
BOOOOM!!!
The whole half of the hospital’s structural wing was entirely blown away into dust, and in that same devastating instant, same with the four assassins, their bodies atomized by the sheer frequency of the attack.
"....?!"
Eve stood entirely frozen, her guzheng slipping slightly in her grip, staring at the destroyed hospital and the empty space where four elite killers had stood in absolute shock.
"Incredible." She muttered to herself, staring down at her own plain, wooden guzheng, then looking up at Mariana’s radiant golden one. The vast, insurmountable chasm between their strengths was laid bare.
’I am too weak.’
