Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Checking the Scores
Chloe’s mouth twitched.
’This old woman really never misses a chance to find fault with me.’
Chloe lowered her head and mumbled, "Grandma."
"Hmph!" Yvonne White scoffed, not appreciating the gesture in the slightest. Her eyes were filled with disgust.
Chloe pretended not to notice and went straight into the kitchen.
After eating instant noodles for half a month straight, her mouth was starting to lose all sense of taste.
The Sinclair family didn’t have the strict rules of a typical wealthy household.
Chloe asked Nanny Archer to make her a bowl of noodles, then carried it out.
Seeing Chloe eating at this hour, Yvonne White was full of disapproval. "Dinner will be ready soon. Can’t you wait?"
Chloe didn’t say a word. She methodically finished the last bite of her noodles, wiped her mouth, and said coolly, "We don’t have that many rules in this house."
Yvonne White retorted, "You are the eldest daughter of the Sinclair family! Your father is the richest man in Kennet. For you to be so ill-mannered... if word got out, wouldn’t you become a laughingstock?"
Chloe was so exasperated she almost laughed.
She couldn’t understand how simply eating a bowl of noodles had become such a heinous crime.
"Mother, the Sinclair family isn’t short on food. The child is still growing, so it’s fine for her to have an extra meal."
Mr. Sinclair came downstairs, his expression grim.
He hadn’t been close to the old woman when his wife was alive. After she passed away, he figured she was still his wife’s mother, so no matter how busy he was, he would always bring his son and daughter to visit her during the holidays.
But now, hearing his own daughter being belittled like this filled Mr. Sinclair with rage.
"I’ve told you before, if you don’t like Chloe, then don’t speak to her. Chloe has done nothing wrong. In fact, it’s you who has been provoking her time and time again. If this continues, I won’t hesitate to send you back."
This time, Mr. Sinclair had torn off all pretenses.
He didn’t care if people called him cruel to his late wife’s mother or disrespectful to the elderly.
He absolutely would not let his daughter be wronged!
Yvonne White was stunned.
Quentin Sinclair had always been deferential to her. This was the first time he had ever spoken to her like this.
When she came to her senses, the old woman clutched her chest tightly, her voice filled with anguish. "Quentin Sinclair, have you lost your mind?! Even if you dote on your own daughter, you can’t just ignore right and wrong!"
"The one who can’t tell right from wrong has always been you!"
Mr. Sinclair cut the old woman off instantly, his gaze as sharp as a sword piercing one’s chest.
Yvonne White jumped in fright. Her lips parted, but she couldn’t utter a single word.
She was truly terrified by the look in Mr. Sinclair’s eyes.
She slumped onto the sofa, unable to move.
As an onlooker, Chloe hadn’t said anything the entire time.
After returning to the kitchen to wash her bowl, she went upstairs to avoid another argument, lest the old woman find fault with her again.
「The next day」
The butler sent Yvonne White away.
Chloe woke up and didn’t see the old woman, and her heart finally felt much lighter.
It wasn’t that she was afraid of Yvonne White, but the woman was always nagging her about one thing or another.
It was just annoying.
Besides, in her last life, Yvonne White was hardly a positive figure in her memory.
Not only would she curse Chloe for no reason, but she would also use all sorts of vicious language to subtly insult her.
Back then, her mind was one-track and she couldn’t think her way out of it, getting stuck in a dead end.
If her family hadn’t pulled her out with all their might, she would have probably just rotted away in some forgotten corner.
In this life, she no longer tried to please the woman. Although the old woman still despised her, Chloe felt much more at ease.
Doing things her own way felt damn good.
Chloe cheerfully went downstairs and took a yogurt drink from the refrigerator.
There was still a long time until breakfast, so Chloe went back to change into workout clothes and headed to the sports field for a run.
There, she happened to run into Ethan Sinclair, who was being besieged by a group of elderly men and women.
At first, Chloe didn’t know what was happening. But when she got closer and listened in, she couldn’t help but shake her head with a wry smile.
The elderly residents of this wealthy neighborhood all had some business connections with each other, so they all knew Ethan Sinclair.
After six months of observation by these grandmas and grandpas, Ethan Sinclair had successfully been voted to the number one spot on their "Top Grandson-in-Law" list.
Right now, they were busy telling Ethan Sinclair just how wonderful their granddaughters were.
One even went so far as to show Ethan Sinclair a photo of a man.
Chloe let out a PFFT and burst out laughing.
’But thinking back on my past life, it seems my three brothers really didn’t have girlfriends!’
She could understand it for Gabriel Sinclair.
After all, celebrities generally marry late.
But for a business tycoon and a Physics genius to have lived for twenty or thirty years without a single girlfriend... that was just ridiculous.
Chloe suddenly felt a great sense of responsibility.
Not far away, Ethan Sinclair, still in hot water, heard the burst of laughter and looked up.
And what did he see but a certain heartless little girl trying to stifle her wild laughter.
A smile touched Ethan Sinclair’s lips, his eyes full of resignation. "Chloe, come here."
Chloe froze, then slowly shuffled over.
Ethan Sinclair raised an eyebrow, bypassed the crowd of elderly folks, and walked to Chloe’s side. He announced seriously, "My sister is calling me home for a meal. I’ll see you all later."
Before anyone had a chance to react, Ethan Sinclair pulled her away.
Chloe was still in a daze.
When she finally came to her senses, her tone was a little aggrieved. "Big Bro, I haven’t gone for my run yet."
Ethan Sinclair looked down at her. "You can go later."
With that, he reached out and poked Chloe’s forehead. "Cody was just standing there enjoying the show instead of helping her big brother."
Chloe yelped in pain and quickly covered her head, her eyes full of vigilance. "I just got here."
Ethan Sinclair chuckled softly.
’The way my little sister looked like she was about to laugh her head off doesn’t exactly scream "I just got here." ’
"Alright, I’m not really mad at you. Let’s go home."
Ethan Sinclair didn’t dare to keep joking with Chloe, afraid his little sister might actually start ignoring him for real.
Seeing this, Chloe understood what Ethan was thinking.
She felt a little helpless but also knew that everything would change with time.
Chloe returned to her room, changed into some loose, casual clothes, and went downstairs.
Nanny Archer had just finished making breakfast.
Chloe plopped down in her seat, and upon smelling the fragrant aroma of the millet porridge, she generously gave a thumbs-up.
Nanny Archer was from the south, where the summers were hot. People there would often make a pot of millet porridge in the morning to soothe their throats.
Even though Chloe wasn’t particularly fond of porridge, she had to admit that Nanny Archer’s was exceptionally fragrant.
After eating, Chloe went back to her room to continue the research she hadn’t finished the day before.
White had now been sent to the lab. After she submitted her college application choices, she would head to the lab to reboot White.
「9:59 AM」
While Chloe was still battling the high-tech books from the system, the adults of the Sinclair family were already seated at the computer.
Mr. Sinclair gripped the mouse tightly. Chloe’s exam information was already entered on the computer.
Everything was ready; they were just waiting for the final signal.
At ten o’clock sharp, Mr. Sinclair clicked the mouse with a trembling right hand.
Three seconds later, the usually gentle and dignified father coldly spat out a single word: "Fuck!"
