Chapter 1148: Chapter 1162: Cry for Help

Xiaoyu looked at her with a serious expression and asked, "What’s wrong, Miss An?"

An Ran glanced around uncertainly, "Miss Huang, did you hear someone calling for help?"

"A call for help?" Xiaoyu also became serious and looked around. Apart from the two of them, there didn’t seem to be anyone else nearby.

"Miss An, you must have heard wrong. We are so close to the guard team, who would dare cause trouble here? Where would a call for help come from..."

Before Xiaoyu could finish her sentence, a clear call for help reached their ears. It sounded like a child’s cry for help. An Ran looked towards the river and saw, as expected, two small dark heads on the wide river surface—someone was drowning.

Without thinking further, An Ran dropped the bag in her hand and ran towards the river.

Xiaoyu quickly followed. When they reached the riverbank, An Ran pointed at one of them and said, "You go save the one at the back, I’ll go after the one at the front."

"I... I can’t swim," Xiaoyu looked at the two small heads in the river, feeling a wave of nervousness, a hint of guilt flickering in her eyes.

With the river current so swift, jumping in might endanger her own life without saving anyone.

Moreover, of the two people in the river, the one at the back was still struggling, but the one at the front showed no signs of struggling, letting the river current carry them downstream. It was unclear whether they were alive or dead.

"Then go find someone for help," An Ran shouted, running quickly along the riverbank.

The river wasn’t narrow, and the rains had just passed, making the current rather swift. She wasn’t sure if she could save one person and then have the strength to save another.

After running a distance and calculating to intercept, she jumped into the water without hesitation.

However, An Ran overestimated her abilities. The moment she hit the water, the suffocating feeling of falling into the sea overwhelmed her, and terror surged in her heart. Despite it being August, she felt she was plunging again into that icy, bone-chilling sea.

For one moment, she couldn’t control her limbs and could only let the river current carry her forward, her body involuntarily sinking.

When a mouthful of river water rushed into her nose, An Ran suddenly snapped awake. Hearing the distant child’s calls for help, she took a deep breath and swam towards the figure.

Xiaoyu stood blankly, watching as An Ran sank momentarily after jumping into the water, then swam towards the distance, her heart pounding incessantly.

Could An Ran really save that person? She didn’t look like a strong swimmer; in fact, when she first hit the water, it seemed as though she herself was drowning, and yet she still wanted to rescue others?

How overly ambitious.

But this wasn’t too bad, either. If she really didn’t come back up, wouldn’t Captain Mu be alone again? What did legal marriage matter? As long as An Ran was dead, Mu Xingfeng would still be single. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Thinking of this, Xiaoyu watched as the figure was swept further away by the river, a strange smile appearing at the corner of her lips as she turned and headed towards the guard team.

"Sister-in-law, what smells so good?" Xiaoyu entered the house and placed the bag on the table.

Qu Jing came out of the kitchen, saw the vegetables on the table, and laughed, "Is the sun rising in the west today? You actually bought groceries for the house. Wait, isn’t loofah your least favorite food? Why did you buy this?"

Qu Jing opened the bag to find two loofahs, and looked at the other bag to find eggplants, which they had just eaten for lunch.
