Chapter 276: Humbled

James knew that he had made her unhappy again. He was a little depressed. He just wanted to tease her, but he didn’t expect her to get upset again. He touched his nose awkwardly and said, "Why don’t I take you out for a ride?"

"Really, have you ever seen anyone go out for a ride during work hours?"

Yvonne didn’t know what to make of him now.

James became frustrated and did not know what to do.

"Then... How about I go find a few patients for you?"

"You..."

This annoyed Yvonne. "Get out of here. You’re not welcomed here."

With that, she pushed him out of the door.

Then she closed her room door.

When James was thrown out of the door, the people around him heard the noise and turned to look at him with strange expressions.

He felt a little ashamed, but he was not about to give up.

"What are you looking at? Huh? What are you looking at?"

He roared at the people around him before he turned and walked away.

When he walked pass the other consulting rooms, he saw that there were patients waiting. Only the area outside Yvonne’s door was empty.

Only then did he realize the reason why Yvonne was in a bad mood.

She didn’t have any patients.

That’s not a problem at all. He could solve it with just a phone call.

With that, he called his assistant.

Just then, Yvonne opened her room door slightly to peep. When she found that James was gone, she left the door open.

She returned to her table and was in a foul mood when she saw that it was dead outside her room.

She knew in her heart that as an unknown doctor, she needs to build up her reputation and trust with the patients.

However, she still felt disappointed when faced with reality.

She looked again at the vacant seats and sighed disillusioned.

At about noon time, Stanley sent her a WhatsApp message.

"Yvonne, let’s go to the canteen for lunch."

She remembered that she had stood Stanley up twice, so she agreed.

In the cafeteria.

They ordered some food and found a place to eat.

While waiting for the food, Stanley talked to her about work in high spirits.

She listened and occasionally nodded.

Stanley was already an established specialist at a young age. His clinic was crowded every day. Even though they were trained by the same professor, there was a huge gap between their success.

This made Yvonne, who was already lacking in self-confidence to have an even lower self-esteem.

"Yvonne, what’s wrong? The dishes today are not as delicious?"

Stanley was talking for a long time then realized that something was not quite right with Yvonne, so he asked.

She shook her head and said, "I don’t have much of an appetite."

Stanley knew what could be bothering her and said, "Yvonne, it’s a process. You’ve just joined the hospital. Don’t worry. How about I introduce some of my patients to you?"

His words suddenly made her feel extremely embarrassed. She hurriedly said, "Don’t, it’s not because of this. I really don’t have much appetite. And I want to prove myself at work."

She spoke out her thoughts.

He understood. "That’s good. Sorry, I jumped the gun."

"Thank you for offering to help."

The two of them looked at each other and smiled. The awkwardness between them disappeared in an instant.

After lunch, she took a coffee break in the lounge then went back to her consulting room.

When she passed by the other consulting rooms, she found that everyone was busy, except her. She sighed in disappointment.

...

The afternoon passed by very quickly.

To her, it felt like eternity.

Just when she was getting bored, a message popped up on her computer. Someone had booked an appointment with her.

As soon as she saw it, she quickly pulled herself together and sat up straight.

As expected, someone walked in. It was a woman in her forties. She was dressed casually and said obsequiously to Yvonne, "Excuse me, is this Dr. White?"

Yvonne nodded and said, "Yes, please take a seat."

Hearing her words, the other party slowly walked to the table and sat down, looking very nervous.

"What’s wrong with you?" Yvonne asked.

The lady hesitated for a moment before voicing out her discomfort.

Yvonne noted them down then said, "Let’s do a CT scan of the head first. We’ll make a diagnosis when the results come out."

"Doctor, I come from the countryside, and I don’t have money to pay for medical bills. Can you prescribe me some medicine to treat headaches?" She sounded embarrassed.

Yvonne said, "Your headache has been going on for a long time, right? I believe you’ve taken a lot of medicine over the years and they didn’t work."

The other party nodded.

"The medication can only help you relieve the pain temporarily, not solve the problem. I suggest you take an X-ray. Only then can we find out what is wrong and cure the root problem to solve the pain."

"But..."

"It’s only one item, you don’t need to pay a lot of money for this. Let’s find out what is wrong when it’s still early and does not cost a bomb for the checkup. That way, you can avoid spending more money in the future. What do you think?"

The other party hesitated for a moment before walking out with the medical slip.

Yvonne looked at the frail figure and felt a little frustrated.

She had been a doctor for many years and had seen many similar occurrences. She felt sad every time, but this was reality.

Some people squandered their money wantonly, while others struggled for a minimal check-up fee.

There was nothing she could do to help.

At this time, another patient came in.

She stopped thinking about the previous patient’s predicament.

By the time she got off work that evening, she had seen several patients in succession.

Finally she got rid of her foul mood because she had no patients.

When she got home, she immediately took a shower. When she came out of the shower, she had several missed calls on her phone.

Except for a missed call from James, the rest were from her family members.

She imagined her whole family sitting in the living room at home, taking turns to call her.

She didn’t think it was funny, so she threw the phone aside, went back to the bathroom, and put the clothes into the washing machine before going to the kitchen.

Because she hadn’t eaten much at noon, she felt hungry at this time, but she didn’t know what to cook.

In addition to her limited cooking skills, there were not many ingredients available for cooking in the refrigerator.

She was a little troubled.

At this moment, her phone rang. She picked it up and saw that it was James.

She didn’t want to talk to him. After all, he had come to the hospital to annoy her during the day.

However, she felt her attitude towards him during the day was not appropriate either, so she answered the call.

"What’s up?"

On the other end of the line, he had thought that she would not answer the phone.

After all, she had driven him out so angrily during the day.

He was not sure if she had calmed down, so he wanted to call her to check.

Unexpectedly, she answered the call.

However, he didn’t know what to say. He scratched his head uneasily and said, "Oh nothing. I just wanted to hear your voice."
