Chapter 235: She’s Sure To Win This Time
Seeing that she was just staring at him without saying a word, Christopher became a little anxious.
"Did she bully you? I’ll go get even with her."
After saying that, Christopher was about to go upstairs.
Janice stopped him. "I’m fine. Let’s go home."
After saying that calmly, she turned around and walked towards the door.
Christopher was stunned for a moment before he followed her.
However, he didn’t know that as soon as they left, Sophie had come down from upstairs.
She didn’t really go upstairs just now. Instead, she had been hiding behind the stairs, listening to them talk.
Given Janice’s reaction, she must have believed it.
She knew that idiot Janice would believe her words.
It seemed that she was sure to win this time.
Thinking of this, Sophie turned around and went back to her room in a good mood. However, as soon as she entered the room, her phone rang. It was a mysterious phone call from a blocked caller ID.
Her face suddenly turned white, and then she hurriedly closed the door before picking up the call tremblingly.
It was unknown what was said on the other end, but her face suddenly turned pale. "Don’t do that. I promise I’ll give you the money on time." After hanging up the phone, she paced uneasily in the room.
She thought, "No, I have to think of a way to get out of here."
However, her father had ordered her not to leave the Bateman family.
She thought, "What should I do?"
Sophie was anxious when her phone rang again. She picked it up, which was from Joey.
When she saw Joey’s phone call, she suddenly thought of a way and immediately answered the phone.
In the car, Janice sat quietly in the back seat.
Ever since Janice left the Bateman family’s old mansion, she hadn’t spoken a single word.
Christopher sat next to her. Seeing that she remained silent and just sat there, as if she had something on her mind, he was a little worried and reached out to hold her hand in his.
"What’s wrong?"
Hearing him ask this, Janice slowly looked over. She wanted to ask him if what Sophie said was true.
As the words were on her lips, she held her tongue in the end.
Christopher saw that she seemed to want to say something but stopped on second thought. He frowned as he asked, "Do you have something to ask me?"
Janice opened her mouth, but no words came out. "Forget it. Let’s talk when we get home."
After all, Rob was still in the car.
Christopher felt that she acted a bit weird, but he did not press on.
Not long after, the car stopped at the entrance of the villa. Janice stepped out of the car with Christopher following behind her. The two entered the villa one after another.
"Now that we’re home, can we talk?"
Christopher couldn’t bear to see her looking preoccupied. As soon as he entered the room, he took her hand and asked her.
Janice paused for a moment before saying, "Let me ask you this. Did anything happen between you and Sophie three years ago?"
After thinking for a while, she still felt that she had to ask tactfully.
Christopher’s heart did a flip. "What did she tell you?"
Upon seeing that he was a bit nervous, Janice also tensed up.
"Answer me first."
Seeing that she insisted on asking him so, Christopher had a rough idea. He thought, "Wasn’t all Sophie could talk about was the incident that had happened three years ago?"
He hurriedly said, "I swear nothing happened between me and her before."
He raised his hand and swore, his gaze locked with hers, not dodging or evading.
Janice could see the sincerity in his eyes, where there were no other thoughts mixed in.
She said almost without any hesitation, "I believe in you."
Hearing her answer, Christopher froze.
He hadn’t expected Janice to answer him so decisively and without the slightest
hesitation. Before this, he had even been prepared to explain himself.
...
He suddenly felt very relieved and reached out to hold her in his arms.
"Do you really believe me?"
He couldn’t believe it.
He couldn’t stop his eyes from becoming moist until Janice nodded in his arms.
No matter how many times he said over the past three years that he had nothing to do with that incident, none of those who knew about it ever believed him.
Apart from his mother, Janice was the first person to trust him without hesitation.
She trusted him.
Only he knew how valuable her trust was.
"Will you tell me what happened three years ago?"
After a long time, Janice stood up from his arms and cautiously asked him.
Christopher’s expression was a bit complicated.
Janice thought he didn’t want to mention it, so she said, "If you don’t want to talk about it, then pretend I didn’t ask. Right, are you hungry? I’ll go to the kitchen and cook something for you."
As she spoke, she was about to turn around and go to the kitchen, but Christopher grabbed her arm.
He said, "Don’t go yet. Listen to me. It’s not that I don’t want to tell you. It’s just that I promised someone to keep that person’s secret."
Hearing him say this, Janice roughly understood.
This was precisely perhaps the reason why this matter had not been solved.
She paused and said, "But, you know what? Because of this matter, Sophie was so presumptuous."
Christopher understood what Janice meant. The reason why Sophie was so arrogant was that she was going to use that matter as an excuse to manipulate him.
He paused and nodded at her. "I’ll tell you."
On the other side, in the Bateman family’s old mansion.
Joey hurried over after receiving Sophie’s call.
"Sophie, what can I do for you?"
Sophie did not speak. Instead, she carefully looked behind him and noticed that no one was following her. Only then did she close the door. She said, "Joey, I have
something to ask of you."
Joey was somewhat flattered to hear her say that. And he couldn’t remember how long it had been since Sophie spoke to him so nicely.
He said excitedly, "Sophie, don’t worry about troubling me. You know, I’m willing to do anything for you."
Meeting his scorching gaze, Sophie was extremely annoyed in her heart, but she held back and did not show it. She continued to say softly, "Joey, actually, it is not a troublesome matter. I have made an appointment with someone to talk about cooperation, but recently, as you know, my brother hasn’t cooled down yet. And I can’t go out for the time being, so I want to trouble you to go to the appointment on my behalf."
Hearing her say this, Joey did not doubt and said, "Of course, no problem. Tell me where to go to meet who and what to say. Tell me about it, and I’ll go right away."
Seeing that he agreed, Sophie was only half relieved. And she still looked a little cautious.
"Well, I promised them that I would pay part of the amount first, so you just need to take this check to the bank and exchange it for cash, and then take the cash to the place he specified and hand it over to him."
As she spoke, she took out a check and handed it over.
Joey took the check but was stunned when he saw the amount on it.
"That much? Sophie, what kind of project are you going to cooperate with them? Will you be swindled if you pay so much money at once?" Joey asked worriedly.
...
Sophie’s face instantly darkened.
"Why do you ask so many questions? Are you questioning my ability? If you don’t want to help, forget it. I’ll go find someone else."
As she spoke, she fiercely snatched the check away from him and angrily turned aside.
Seeing this, Joey apologized immediately. "I’m sorry, Sophie. That’s not what I meant. I’ll go. I won’t ask again."
Hearing him say this, Sophie pretended to forgive him. "Then I will forgive you this once. Remember, besides you and me, you must not let a third person know about this. Do you hear me?"
Given what happened just now, Joey no longer dared to ask her again, even though he was still full of doubts in his heart.
After that, Sophie handed him her cell phone.
"Take my cell with you. He will call and tell you the location. Just do as he says."
"Okay."
Joey put away the check and turned to leave, but he thought of something. He looked back and said, "By the way, Sophie, my friend in Switzerland called me before and said that someone asked him about what happened to us in Switzerland. Do you know about it?"
Hearing Joey’s question, Sophie felt guilty more or less. With an awkward look on her face, she said, "What’s the big deal? If someone wants to ask, just ask. We’ve done nothing suspicious in Switzerland anyway, so what’s there to be afraid of?"
Joey originally had doubts in his heart, but when he heard what Sophie said, he didn’t doubt it and said, "I got it."
He turned around and walked out.
Sophie was not relieved until she saw him go out.
Joey held that phone and the check. As soon as he came downstairs, he bumped into his father, Mr. Charlie, at the stairwell.
"Dad." Joey nodded.
Seeing him coming down the stairs, Mr. Charlie’s face darkened, and then he said, "Joey, why are you looking for Miss Valen?"
When he heard his father ask this, Joey thought of what Sophie had told him before, which was that he couldn’t let anyone know about it. Thus, he made up an excuse. "It’s inconvenient for Sophie to go out, so she asked me to buy something for her at the supermarket. You know she is the pickiest person. No one else can do it."
Hearing his explanation, Mr. Charlie didn’t doubt him. He just said, "Joey, recently,
there are a lot of things going on in the Valen family. Don’t cause trouble. You’d better not come here as often as possible, especially not to see Miss Valen."
Joey was taken aback. "Dad, did something happen? Why don’t you let me see Sophie?"
Mr. Charlie was in a dilemma. It was not appropriate for him to reveal too much about the master’s family affairs, but Joey was his son after all.
He didn’t want to see his son get involved.
He hesitated for a while and said, "I can’t talk too much about it. You just need to listen to me."
"Dad..."
Joey still wanted to ask more.
However, Mr. Charlie interrupted him. "Since Miss Valen asked you to go shopping for her, then hurry up and go. Don’t upset her."
After saying that, Mr. Charlie turned around and left.
Joey, however, stared at his father’s retreating figure and felt a little strange.
Without thinking much about it, he turned around and left.
In the villa, Janice was dumbfounded after listening to Christopher’s narration.
She had always known that Sophie was a shameless woman, but she didn’t expect her to be beyond shameless.
She thought, "She is truly detestable! How could she be capable of doing such a shameless thing? "
