Chapter 226: What Was He Looking At?
"The office jobs of the TV station, as you know, are all receptionist positions. That’s not suitable, is it?"
Chief Gray said euphemistically.
"It’s fine." Janice immediately shook her head.
Chief Gray thought, "You may be okay with it, but I may get into trouble for this. Who would allow the wife of a major shareholder to be a receptionist?"
As a veteran, Chief Gray naturally wouldn’t reject Janice. After a brief ponder, he said, "How about this; as you know, the television station often works overtime, and it isn’t a suitable environment for pregnant women. If you’re bored at home, I can recommend you to a magazine."
"My friend is the editor in chief. I heard that they have been looking for an editor for some time ago. You are a reporter, so the job of an editor is perfect for you. If you like, I can ask him."
"Then I’ll have to trouble you, Chief."
Janice nodded without hesitation. She wanted a job and wasn’t picky.
The next day, Janice received a call from Chief Gray.
The media company had agreed to hire her.
After getting changed, she immediately went to there to start work.
It was a media company that had been around for many years, focusing primarily on fashion.
It was quite famous in the industry.
The chief editor admired her work very much. After a polite exchange, he asked a colleague in the editor’s department to show her around.
Janice was very satisfied with the new environment.
What she wanted most now was stability. Challenges were something of the past.
It was the peace that she and her child deserved.
"Baby, today is Mommy’s first day at work. You must behave yourself."
She stood in front of the bathroom mirror and looked around. She quietly stroked her belly and couldn’t help curling her lips.
Compared with Janice’s joy of starting a new Chapter in her life, her husband’s days were far gloomier.
He had been brooding about it ever since he was thrown out by Janice.
He felt that he was too useless and was not willing to give in, but he didn’t dare to
disturb her.
At times, when he thought about it, he felt that it was ironical. He, Christopher Bateman, can be fearful?
What was he afraid of?
Was he afraid that she would throw him out again?
Or getting rejected again...
Above all, he was afraid that she would move away without a trace.
If that was the case, he didn’t know if he could still find her.
With these thoughts in mind, he parked the car outside the gate of the lakeside apartment again.
He couldn’t remember how many times he had been there.
He would drive there for no reason, it was as if there was a mysterious force pulling him along.
However, he only stopped for a few minutes before driving away. This time, he did not drive away immediately. Instead, he sat in the car and found the building through the car window. Subconsciously, he raised his head and counted the floors: first, second, third ...
He counted the floors, all the way to the 17th floor.
It was dark on that floor.
Maybe he counted wrongly since so many floors in between were dark.
It’s just that his obsession landed his eyes on that floor.
He didn’t know what he was looking at.
But he knew that if he saw lights on that floor, he would feel at ease.
When it was dark, he would subconsciously glance at the time. If it was still early, he would feel much more relaxed. However, if it was late, he would be worried.
...
He didn’t know exactly what he was worried about, but he was extremely uneasy.
This time, he sat in the car until ten o’clock in the evening, but there was still no light in that room. He started to feel worried.
He wanted to phone her and ask her why she was not home yet.
But the moment he picked up the phone, he put it down.
He thought, "Why did I call her?"
"Why should I call her?"
"Whether she went home or not has nothing to do with me."
"Didn’t she refuse me?"
"She basically expelled me!"
"Why should I care about her?"
"I won’t demean myself!"
"Since she had given me the cold shoulder, why should I continue to care about her?"
He felt wronged and panicked. He started the car and was about to leave.
At that moment, a familiar figure appeared in his line of sight. It was Janice.
Seeing that she had finally returned, Christopher felt a surge of joy. At the same time, he heaved a sigh of relief.
He stared at Janice, planning to leave after she went inside. However, in the next second, a man caught up with her.
That man was Benjamin.
Christopher felt rather surprised as he saw him. Why was he with Janice?
Truth be told, it was an encounter.
In the evening, there was a staff gathering in their magazine. She was pregnant, so she originally planned on not attending. However, the chief editor and colleagues invited her repeatedly.
They were so hospitable, she had no choice but to participate.
Her colleagues took good care of her and ordered many foods that pregnant women could eat and did not persuade her to drink.
Janice was well taken good care of. She was grateful.
Unexpectedly, the chief editor went out to pick up one of his good friends.
She didn’t expect that his friend was Benjamin.
When Benjamin saw her, he was surprised and somewhat embarrassed.
After all, on the phone last time, he was very sad about her words of "only being friends".
Therefore, he rarely talked to her at dinner and pretended that he didn’t know her.
Janice didn’t mind at all.
To her, losing a friend like Benjamin was a straightforward affair. She would feel sad in the short-term, but it wasn’t to the point where she couldn’t let go.
For this reason, she had been quiet during the event.
When it was over, his colleagues went back in groups of twos and threes.
In the end, only she and a few male colleagues from different roads were left waiting for a taxi on the roadside.
One of her male colleagues was already drunk and unconscious, so she kindly let him get in the car first.
Her male colleagues just happened to be passing by, so they left together.
She waited alone on the road. At this moment, Benjamin’s car drove over.
Janice originally hadn’t wanted to take his car.
However, she could not resist his words.
He said, "Janice, I admit that I shouldn’t still have feelings for you, even now. But don’t worry, I’ve thought it through. From now on, we will just be friends. That is, if you are still willing to be my friend?"
"Of course."
"Since we are friends, do you think I will let my friend take a taxi home alone at night?"
Janice couldn’t refuse, so she took his car home.
On the way, he asked about her new job and knew that she worked in a magazine.
He talked to Janice about his company. Although he did not mention it much, he said that he would try his best to save it. If it was really not possible, he would not force it.
...
Janice had no right to speak on this matter. Although she had started this, she had done all that she could.
She could no longer be of any help.
She remained silent until the car stopped at the entrance of the apartment.
She thanked Benjamin and got out of the car, but she did not expect that he would suddenly catch up with her.
"Janice."
Janice stopped in her tracks. "What is it?"
Benjamin hesitated for a moment before saying, "It’s nothing. It’s just dark up ahead. Be careful."
Janice nodded. "Thank you for reminding me. You can go back now." She turned around and continued to walk forward.
Benjamin stood there until she went in, and then he looked meaningfully at a dark corner.
That corner was where Christopher’s car was parked.
He had seen his car parked there from a distance.
In the previous fight, although the two of them did not win, he was obviously at a disadvantage.
So when he saw that his car was parked there, he deliberately got out of the car.
He wanted to see him send Janice back.
Compared to him hiding there, he could at least send her home openly.
In this way, he finally won a round this time.
Benjamin had never felt so happy, and the feeling of victory was particularly good.
He could finally win his dignity back.
Thinking of this, he smiled, but it was tinged with bitterness.
He turned around and went back to the car.
Christopher sat there, holding the steering wheel tightly with both hands, and his cold eyes stared at the extremely detestable figure.
At the moment when Benjamin’s car drove away, he quickly started his car and followed up him.
The two cars drove on the road.
Compared with Benjamin’s Phaeton, Christopher’s Bentley seemed to be more powerful, and it didn’t take long for it to overtake him.
However, overtaking him was not Christopher’s intention. He drove side by side with Benjamin’s car, but always maintained half a car ahead of the other man. He did not give him a chance to overtake, and even provocatively flipped the bird.
Benjamin naturally knew what he meant.
He was not angry but driving calmly.
It wasn’t until he saw the road sign ahead that he sneered. Then at the intersection ahead, he suddenly made a turn and the car drove to another road.
When Christopher found it, he quickly turned the car around, but it was too late.
With a bang, he hit the flower bed on the side of the road.
"Name, place of origin, take out your driver’s license. I need to make sure that you are not drunk driving."
That was the second time that Christopher was taken into such a place.
He refused to speak and had no intention of cooperating. The traffic police had no choice but to bring him back. However, he still refused to cooperate.
"Alright, I need to call your family here. Give me the phone."
Without thinking much, Christopher handed over his phone.
The traffic officer took his cell phone and opened the address book. He saw a number marked with "wife" and he dialed it.
In the apartment, Janice had just taken a shower. She was drying his wet hair when her phone suddenly rang. She picked it up. It was a call from Christopher.
He had not shown up for the past few days. She thought that he had accepted the fact that they were separated.
Unexpectedly, he called again in the middle of the night. Just as she hesitated to answer the phone, the caller hung up.
She breathed a sigh of relief and had just put down her phone when it rang again. It was an unfamiliar number.
She picked it up.
"Sorry, madam. I’m sorry to bother you. May I ask you a question? Are you Christopher’s Bateman’s wife?"
