Chapter 464: Prove it II.
Zevran.
"I will kill you!" Those words echoed through the air, pulling me out of the fuzzy daze I had once been lost in.
My hands which were balled into fists loosened and I lifted my head briefly only to realize that my brothers were looking just as stunned and confused as I was— if not more.
Our gazes latched onto and held onto each other’s for a moment before Caelum finally broke the ice. He asked; "What was that?"
I do not know.
Goddess, I hate that I do not know.
"Should we go to her now?" He added when no one would respond to his question, his voice dripping with worry and panic... and something else. Something almost maniacal that even seeped into his eyes.
For the past couple of minutes, I— we— have been standing here, with our backs pressed against the wall while we waited for a sign or anything from Leilani.
And to me, that shout was all the sign I needed. Heck, it was more than enough.
"Do you think that is the signal she talked about? Do you think it’s best to go to her now?" Caelum wouldn’t stop blabbering; And for some reason, the more he talked, the more anxious I became.
"If you come close to me or try to talk dirty to me another time, I will kill you and I will feed your filthy corpse to the dogs! You hear me?!" Her frantic voice echoed once again throughout the quiet parking lot, causing my already pounding heart to hammer even harder against my chest.
At the sound, I pushed away from the wall and didn’t even bother to check in with my brothers first before stumbling away from them and to her in frantic desperate movements.
I do not know when I moved and can not remember how exactly one minute ago, I was standing with my back to the wall, and in the next, I was halting in my tracks, panting like the devil was running right after me, after covering a distance of about three miles in a minute. My breath caught in my throat just as soon as I stopped moving when I came face to face with...
"Leilani?" Caelum gasped from behind me. I guess he’d run just as fast as I had. "What are you doing?"
His question made me blink at the almost impossible scene unfolding in front of me, and even until now— now that enough oxygen has flowed into my brain, giving me more than enough opportunity to process what I was seeing— I still couldn’t believe it.
I still couldn’t believe that the almighty Darius was sprawled on the floor with his hands thrown up while Leilani hovered above him looking very much like a predator, while he was her prey. I still couldn’t believe that she clutched his neck with one of her hands while the other was balled into a fist and pulled backwards in a frozen punch.
—And I still couldn’t believe that he simply laid there, as if waiting to be hit, his eyes holding nothing but guilt and embarrassment... and goddess is that admiration?
Fuck, why the hell is he admiring her so openly?
My eyes trailed between his face to her hand which was still raised mid-punch— a punch which would have landed squarely on his face if we didn’t step in by the time we did.
That thought made me almost regret walking in at the time that I did as I couldn’t help but be mad that she didn’t get the chance to hit him in the way he deserved.
"It looks like she is taking proper care of herself." Kael whistled from behind me, and I didn’t miss the hint of pride that laced his tone as he spoke. Hell, I couldn’t even blame him as I too was also proud of her.
I shrugged. "Yeah, we were worried for nothing."
At my words, Darius blinked, then all of a sudden, his shocked expression morphed into something stony and dark. He tried to shrug off Leilani’s hand, the one still wrapped around his neck, but failed... and failed again... and—
"Let go!" He hissed suddenly, sounding every bit of the embarrassed fuck that he was. "I do not want to have to hit you, Lani. Let go!"
I saw her flinch slightly at his overly loud voice but she didn’t move away. Do you know what she did instead?
She took her time crouching beside him and then slowly let her hand trail off his neck to rest on his shoulder. She didn’t even turn to look as us as she leaned forward so much that for a moment, they looked like they were sharing the same breath— which I hated— as she hissed;
"I meant everything I said here today. Mark my words, Brother, I’ll come after you if and when I discover that you had something to do with my father’s death."
"I am not your brother." He snapped back, and in the same breath added; "...also, I had nothing to do with Father’s death."
"That is for me to conclude. Until then, live freely. Enjoy your time as the Alpha, not know that I will come back for what is mine... and that I will unravel all the secrets that you have decided to hide."
She sounded so hot saying those words, but at the moment, her ’hotness’ was not the thing that mattered the most to me. It was the words that she was saying...
She was obviously linking him to her father’s death when in truth, my brothers and I were the hitmen and executioners of what had happened.
Or had she forgotten?
Is this some sort of selective memory loss?
While I thought these things, Kael walked past me to pull her away from Darius. He held her so tightly... so intimately that for a moment, I wished it was me, and then he drawled; "Let’s go back."
She frowned, turned to him and snarled; "He had something to do with my father’s death! How can I just let him go?!"
"You should," he said in that leveled tone of his that always gives me the chills. "You should leave him be if you do not have any evidence to support your claim."
For the first time tonight, Darius looked as though he was glad that we were here. And this only happened after Kael said those words to Leilani.
I saw her face go white as soon as she heard that, but just as she was about to respond, he added; "It would not do you no good. But if you’re certain that he has something to do about your father’s demise, which I am also involved in, then reopen the case. Make him pay legally then you can do whatever the fuck you want with him."
Of course, this is why I always say that Kael gives me the chills.
"You can skin him alive or boil him in a large man sized aluminum pot if you want. Hell, you can even behead him like your father was beheaded, for all I care. But first, baby, you need proof."
"Proof?"
"Yes, proof." He drawled, and with that, he pulled her away from Darius and began to drag her out of the parking lot.
Gosh, that had been so creepy.
