Chapter 65: 65-Their Sweet Princess
Verity:
After the stunt Gigi had pulled, she had successfully turned herself into the victim and made me feel as though I was targeted only because her lover wanted to punish me.
All the attention had shifted away from me.
Nobody would probably care about looking after me anymore.
Their concern would now be for Gigi because, according to everyone, she was the man’s main target.
As I watched her cry hysterically and put on that entire performance, I realized one thing, she was a really clever woman.
If I wanted to beat her, I would have to stay two steps ahead.
"You don’t need to worry about anything. I’m with you," Ragnar said to her, gently patting her back while she drank another glass of water.
"Maybe that’s why her house was broken into as well," Jaguar commented.
I wanted to roll my eyes so hard at him. Why was he so dumb?
"What do you mean her house was broken into?" Theodore asked, pointing at me.
The two of them looked at me before quickly looking away, as if they were guilty of something.
Most likely of initiating something with me.
I could tell from the way they were avoiding my gaze.
"Yeah, the other night her house got broken into, and I’m now realizing it’s because whoever this guy is, he’s trying to make Gigi uncomfortable," Jaguar continued, repeating the same things Gigi had told him.
"But why would he focus on me so much? Has anyone else been getting messages or letters?" I asked.
Everybody went silent and stared at me.
Gigi looked at me for a moment before nodding. "Yes, some of my maids have been getting them too."
There was a strange snarky tone in her voice, almost as if she was calling me a maid as well.
I just couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
"Oh."
That was all I said because, honestly, I didn’t know how else to respond.
"Besides, I think they’re specifically targeting you because you’ve been seen with the Alpha King brothers. You’re Ragnar’s personal secretary, so I think you should try to avoid being seen around them outside office hours."
There it was.
Gigi had finally said it.
She had carefully set up this entire situation to make it seem as though my life would be in danger if I continued spending time with them.
And because all of this was supposedly happening due to some powerful man trying to claim her as a reward, she knew exactly how to manipulate the situation.
Of course she knew how to get the Alpha King brothers on her side.
"Yeah, I think you’re right. I’ll be careful."
Before the brothers could say anything, I said it myself.
I could already sense that they had changed their minds. The way they had been avoiding me said it all.
"Anyway, I will look into everything, and I still want those text messages. I’ll try to track them as much as possible," Ragnar said, pointing a finger at me.
I nodded and returned to my seat.
As I sat down, I felt rage bubbling inside me.
The three brothers were still trying to comfort her, and it was happening right before my eyes.
At one point, I looked up and caught Theodore glancing at me.
He fell silent for a brief moment, but I kept my face turned away.
Then I raised an eyebrow slightly to show just how displeased I was.
He continued watching me, trying to figure out what was wrong, but I quickly looked away and lowered my gaze to the screen.
The silence lingered again before Theodore suggested that they plan the trip again.
"And while we’re doing that, I’ll also take Gigi out for dinner as a way to make up for my mistake," Theodore said, looking at Ragnar for permission.
"Sure. What do you say, Gigi?" Ragnar asked.
She nodded through her tears.
"Come on, let’s get you some fresh air before we plan dinner," Theodore said.
Before he could get closer, however, Jaguar took her hand and helped her to her feet.
She laughed at the two of them buzzing around her like bees.
As they walked past me, I caught their scent mixed with Gigi’s perfume, and I wanted to throw up.
Their cologne, their natural scents, all of it smelled good on its own, but mixed with Gigi’s perfume, it became unpleasant.
Or maybe I was just being a hater.
Once they left, I let out a deep breath, almost as if I had been holding it in the entire time.
Then I looked up.
I found Ragnar standing by his chair, a cigar in one hand and his other arm draped over the backrest.
He was leaning forward, watching me intently.
This time, I did not awkwardly look away. I held his gaze for a brief moment before lowering my eyes.
I couldn’t help but remember my first meeting with Ragnar.
Then my thoughts drifted to my first meeting with the brothers.
It wasn’t like I had met them during the best phase of their lives.
They had actually been pretty fucked up.
Most importantly, Theodore had been.
Once the day ended and I packed my things to leave, I headed to Jaguar’s floor, hoping to bump into him and ignite something between us.
Instead, I saw someone I thought had already left his life.
It was his ex-girlfriend.
She was coming out of his office with a smile on her face, and he was right beside her.
I don’t know what came over me, but my steps came to a halt as if I had just caught my mate cheating on me.
I could feel my eyes widening, and my jaw nearly hit the floor.
That was when Jaguar eyes landed on me, and I caught a flicker of hesitation on his face.
There was a little guilt there and a little realization, as if he had suddenly become aware that I had seen him.
Then, while maintaining eye contact, almost as if he were trying to prove a point, he wrapped an arm around her and smiled.
The two of them walked away together.
Oh, I was going to punish him for this so badly.
