Chapter 166: 166-He Calls Himself Fox King

Verity:

I’m not sure what I was seeing.

It just felt so unreal.

I stared at the man.

He was tall. Very tall. Broad shoulders. A long black coat reached almost to the ground, and the inside was dark red.

Long red ribbons hung from it, moving every time the wind blew.

A hood covered most of his head, but not enough to hide the silver fox mask on his face.

It had long pointed ears, red markings, and narrow eye holes.

I couldn’t see his face at all. Only his eyes.

They were completely white except for a thin slit in the middle.

Black cloth covered everything below the mask, including his neck.

He wore black gloves. One side was red, the other black.

Chains and little ornaments hung from his belt and coat, but none of them made a sound when he moved.

There wasn’t a single movement that looked weak. Every step was calm.

Every movement was controlled.

Everything about him was covered. His face. His neck. Even his hands.

I couldn’t tell who he was.

I couldn’t even tell if he was human.

One hand rested inside his coat pocket while the other held an open hand fan. It was black with dark red patterns across it.

It was unlike anything I had ever seen before.

He moved very calculatedly, as if he were walking on air.

He was taller than the lycan.

The lycan got up while I crawled under a tree, hiding in the shadows and watching the whole scene unfold.

The lycan’s eyes searched around, almost as if it was looking for me in particular.

But the man started to fan himself, catching the lycan’s attention.

When he moved his fan, I’m not sure if he whistled or what, but a very faint tune played.

That caught not only my attention but the lycan’s too.

He was trying to distract the lycan from looking for me.

I’m not even sure what I could call this man.

He looked like a fox.

The lycan growled and charged at him again, but the man suddenly pulled open his hand fan.

The way he moved it was so soft and meticulous, like a bullfighter, stepping aside just as the lycan lunged past him.

Only then did I notice the deep gash running across the lycan’s chest and stomach.

He had cut it with nothing but his fan.

The fox’s nails started to grow. They shone a strange white and red.

He was the most unreal thing I had ever seen.

The lycan howled again while the man behind the fox mask moved swiftly toward it, slipping his fan back into his long coat before reaching for the lycan.

The lycan tried to attack him, but the man was quicker.

He caught its arm and scratched its skin right off.

It looked so painfully gory that I covered my eyes.

It was only for a brief second, but when I uncovered them, I noticed they were both gone.

I could still hear the lycan screaming in pain and agony in the distance.

But where did the man go?

Then I felt his presence beside me.

Before I could even turn around, I found his hand stretched out beside my face.

I looked at it and saw the half-red, half-black gloves he was wearing.

Then I looked up at him, turning to face him.

I couldn’t see his eyes.

He was wearing a mask, and everything about him was so dark and mysterious.

He was hunched down in front of me.

Still overwhelmed with fear, I placed my hand in his.

The cold touch sent shivers through me.

I tried to use his hand for support as I got up, but I realized I had sprained my ankle while running in heels.

I immediately dropped, but he was quick to catch me.

The moment between us stretched on while I looked deeper into his eyes, realizing they were completely white.

There was only a thin outline around the iris and a narrow slit in the middle.

But I knew he was watching me.

He held me close in an almost protective pose.

He was breathing very calmly, not like someone who had just fought a lycan.

He didn’t straighten up, and neither did I.

We just stayed like that for I don’t know how long until I heard something inside me.

"Mate," I gasped.

The shivers ran straight to my ears, covering my body in goosebumps.

I watched him frown, although there wasn’t much of his expression visible beneath the mask.

But the way his eyes seemed to grow hazy made me feel like maybe he felt it too.

Or maybe he didn’t.

"Who are you?" I asked, my heart thundering as I said those words.

He didn’t say anything.

He just blinked.

"Are you my mate?" I continued, still leaning against him, watching him under the full moon.

He stayed still, neither leaving nor saying a word.

"Fox King," he whispered.

I frowned.

Did I hear him call himself the Fox King?

"Yes," he added.

His way of speaking was odd.

He answered my questions, but in a way that made me wonder if there was even a human behind the mask.

His eyes told me there wasn’t.

"Why am I suddenly so dizzy?" I uttered, feeling my heartbeat slowing down.

My eyes slowly started to close.

I’m not sure what was happening.

But the more his eyes became hooded, the more mine started to close.

"Is it you?" I whispered.

"Are you doing it?" I asked.

"No, I don’t want to pass out," I pleaded, trying to move.

But he held me so tightly I couldn’t.

I tried to reach for his mask.

But he slowly raised his other hand with the fan in it, and placed it over my wrist, gently pulling my hand to the side.

Before I knew it, I was losing consciousness in his arms.

"Sleep well, my mate. I will find you again."

His voice came out muffled because of the cloth wrapped around his mouth.

But I heard it.

I felt it.

And suddenly, I was in such a comfortable place, like I hadn’t been in years.
