Chapter 142: 142-My Way Or Highway

Gigi:

She glanced around anxiously before finally shaking her head.

"No. We’ll find another way, but this isn’t it," she said, walking toward the door.

"Then you leave me no choice."

"What are you thinking of doing?" my mother asked, stopping midway and turning to look at me.

I felt her body shudder, as though she was bracing herself for whatever answer I was about to give.

"The only thing I have left," I murmured.

I wasn’t crying anymore, but silent tears continued to slip down my face.

My mother’s brows drew together as she desperately searched for another option.

"Mother, I survived Justin because he was a nobody. But with them, I’ll never survive."

A quiet laugh escaped me, one that sounded more like I was laughing at myself.

"So you’ve left me with no other choice but—"

I trailed off, watching her eyes widen.

"To end my misery," I whispered.

Then my gaze fell on her face.

The fear written across it made it painfully clear that she understood exactly what I was talking about.

I could only endure so much. After a certain point, everything fell apart.

That was what I wanted my mother to understand. I had no other choice left.

"I would rather die," I whispered.

The moment those words left my mouth, my mother gasped.

"I’ll end my life because I’m not going to live through that humiliation again."

As soon as I said it, I jumped off the couch and rushed toward the kitchen.

My mother ran after me.

She caught me from behind, wrapping her arms around me and pulling me away from the kitchen.

"Have you lost your mind?" she screamed.

"Have I?" I cried. "I’ve lost everything. I’ve lost my dignity so many times. There’s something about my body, Mother, that men can’t look away from. Don’t you understand?"

I broke down, sobbing.

"I’m too perfect for men."

I began to shake uncontrollably, crying on my knees in front of my mother.

My mother knelt beside me and gripped my arms, giving me a gentle shake as though she could pull me out of my despair.

"No, Mother. There is no other way."

I cried even harder.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I’ve become a burden to all of you. Every time, my beauty gets me into trouble. It’s better if I help all of you by leaving this world. Please let me go, Mother. It will be so much easier for you, Daddy, and even Oliver."

A genuine sob tore from my throat as the reality crashed over me.

I had a deranged stalker waiting to get his hands on me.

At that moment, it struck me that Lady Lucille had no idea.

She was only acting the way she was because she didn’t know the truth.

My stalker was so obsessed with me that he would come after her too.

And honestly, if she didn’t change her ways, I might even tell him to torture her.

I wouldn’t shed a tear for her.

"Fine."

My mother’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.

I looked at her, and a broken, gentle smile spread across my lips.

"I’ll take you to her. Promise me you won’t ask too much of her," my mother said.

I sniffled and nodded.

"Thank you, Mother. Thank you."

I wrapped my arms around her and cried.

It had been such a difficult time for me.

But finally, I had done it.

Finally, I had something to hope for.

After my mother agreed, she helped me to my feet and took me to my bathroom, where I supposedly spent an hour showering, pretending to be completely miserable.

When I came out, she had prepared soup for me. She lovingly tucked me into bed and pulled the blankets over me.

I was taking full advantage of her care.

Once I had settled in, I drank about half the soup.

My mother sat in the chair beside my bed.

"Remember," she said, "don’t get too carried away. She’ll try to tempt you with promises of more power and beauty."

I shook my head to silence her.

"I don’t need beauty. I already have it. In fact, I might even ask her to take some of it away."

I rolled my eyes as I remembered how crazy men were about me.

Then I thought about the old woman and realized that all her hatred came from the fact that I was beautiful by men’s standards.

That was why she was jealous of me.

Verity, on the other hand, was more beautiful by women’s standards, which didn’t really matter to me.

I wasn’t just beautiful to old women, and I didn’t really care about their opinions.

I mean, look at me. I have a stalker. Ragnar’s brothers are crazy about me.

"No, don’t do that," my mother warned.

"She’ll make you ugly."

Her words made my breath hitch.

"Anyway, what I’m trying to say is this: ask only for what’s important, then leave. Don’t make side deals."

My mother held my gaze, making sure I understood.

"Mom, I’m so broken that I wouldn’t even want a diamond necklace right now, or a mansion filled with diamonds," I said, trying to reassure her.

I wasn’t going to reveal everything.

I already knew what I was going to ask for, and I intended to ask for only that.

But my mother didn’t need to know.

"I wish I could take you myself, but this time you’ll have to go see her alone. Last time was different," my mother said.

"Don’t worry. Everything will be fine. I won’t let her fool me," I replied with a weak smile.

"What matters to me is making sure Ragnar’s brothers finally leave me alone."

She believed me.

She believed every single lie.

As she walked away to speak with the woman, I straightened my spine and smiled to myself.

Finally, I’d done it.

Now I just had to make sure I was perfectly clear about my demands when I met her.
