Chapter 137: 137-Like A Swan
Verity:
The first person I met when I arrived was Gigi.
It didn’t take me long to realize that the house was a complete circus.
Everyone was gathered in one corner, eating breakfast, while Gigi stood by herself. Ragnar wasn’t there either.
I was trying to understand everything.
It was my first time stepping into the mansion.
When the maid took me to the guest room, I realized it was right next to the living room. That separate wing was where everyone was having breakfast.
I also noticed a young woman, an older couple, and, of course, Lady Lucille.
Just then, I heard Theodore’s and Jaguar’s voices.
"We were going to tell you," Theodore said humbly.
"Seriously? When?" Gigi shot back.
As I sat quietly on the sofa in the guest room, I kept my ears peeled, listening to their conversation.

"Last night, we were going to tell you, but then we came to the kitchen and you were having a moment with Ragnar. Then he got upset because we didn’t do anything when the others humiliated you," Jaguar explained.
As he spoke, I began making mental notes.
So the new family didn’t like Gigi. That was why they were having breakfast separately.
But what exactly was she upset about?
" And she decided to hire Verity?"
Well, Gigi answered those questions herself.
I smiled to myself and shook my head.
She was so insecure.
She wouldn’t even let anyone near the mansion.
I could understand if it were only because of Ragnar.
But why was she so defensive about Jaguar and Theodore?
They weren’t her mates. They weren’t her boyfriends.
They were nothing to her.
It honestly made me believe there was more going on in her head than simply being Ragnar’s girlfriend.
While they were talking, another voice joined the conversation.
"What’s going on here?"
It was Ragnar’s tired voice.
I had heard from the manager that Ragnar had been out all night, inspecting sites and visiting areas where people had reported monster activity after dark.
He did all that only to come home to a complaining girlfriend.
"Did you know about that too?" Gigi asked, not even giving him a moment to breathe.

"About what?" Ragnar asked.
"That they’re hiring Verity to help your grandmother with events," Gigi replied, keeping her voice calm.
I knew that wasn’t how she really spoke.
Like I said, I had known Gigi since childhood.
Whenever she got angry, she screamed, threw things, and even resorted to physical violence.
Justin and Gigi used to have arguments about it all the time. Ever since they were children, Gigi had a personal maid, and she treated her terribly.
Once, the maid came to our house to help Gigi with something. We noticed scratch marks all over the maid’s face.
It turned out Gigi had done it.
I remember Justin being furious with her.
But Gigi made up a story that she had been heavily medicated because of a toothache or something.
I don’t know.
Now I believed all of those excuses had been lies.
But we were all children back then, barely teenagers.
We simply believed her.
"Why Verity?" Ragnar asked his brothers.
Goosebumps rose across my skin.
My wounds were still pretty bad, so I remembered the last time Ragnar and I had interacted. He had been so cold and callous.
"I just felt bad for her after the attack," Theodore replied, making me raise an eyebrow.
Oh, I was going to use that against him.
"Yeah, she was hurt, and we thought she might need the money," Jaguar added, trying to get back into Gigi’s good books.
So whenever they claimed in front of me that they were adults who could make their own decisions, it was only an act. They would never dare say that to Gigi, Ragnar, or anyone else.
They were playing a game too. The one where they tried to stay in Gigi’s good books while also getting into my pants.
"You should have talked to me first," Ragnar said to his brothers.
They immediately fell silent.

Then there was silence, and I wondered whether that was the end of the conversation or if they suspected I was listening.
Then I heard a familiar complaining voice.
"This old age is killing me," Lady Lucille muttered.
So that was why everyone had gone quiet. They had seen her arrive.
"Why are you walking around? Shouldn’t you be resting?" Ragnar asked.
His tone was cold.
"Well, now I will, since you asked me to," Lady Lucille replied sarcastically.
"Actually, I’m here to tell the girl that I’m not hiring her."
As soon as Lady Lucille said that, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, wondering if I had made the wrong decision by coming here all glammed up.
Everyone had looked threatened when I walked into that living area. I should have known better.
"That’s a very good idea. I was going to suggest the same thing. She works for me. She’s my secretary, and if she can make my head spin with her mistakes, she’ll make yours explode."
Ragnar didn’t hold back as he listed all the reasons I was supposedly such a terrible employee.
"She works for you?" Lady Lucille asked.
"Yeah, she does. It’s kind of a favor to her because she has no one. But she really gets on Ragnar’s nerves. She doesn’t work well," Gigi quickly added in a soft voice, even though her words were anything but kind.
There was another silence.
Then the door opened.
I looked up and realized Lady Lucille had come to reject me.
As she walked in, I stood and gave her a small bow.
With a wave of her hand, she motioned for me to sit down.
Then she walked over and sat on the bed.
Gigi came in with her arms folded across her chest and an indifferent expression.

Ragnar came in as well.
When our eyes met, I expected him to look at least a little guilty.
Instead, that fucker looked like he had no idea he’d done anything wrong.
Jaguar and Theodore didn’t come in. They had probably realized I had heard everything and didn’t want to stand there while I was rejected after they were the ones who had asked me to come.
"So, I’ll be honest with you. I was going to tell you not to come work for me," Lady Lucille began, pausing for a moment. "But then I realized I should give you a chance."
The moment those words left her mouth, Gigi straightened and shot Ragnar a quick look.
Ragnar looked just as shocked.
"Grandma, we just talked about this outside," he hissed, reminding her of the decision she had been planning to make.
"Yeah, I changed my mind," Lady Lucille replied with a shrug.
I started calculating.
Why?
Why the fuck had she suddenly changed her mind?
