Chapter 134: 134-Once Upon A Time When I Ran Away
Verity:
Flashback:
"When is he going to be home?" Gigi asked, almost ready to throw the cushion at my face.
I could tell she had a lot on her mind because, ever since she arrived, she had ignored me.
Even when I asked if she wanted something to eat and offered to make it for her, she brushed me off with a sharp wave of her hand.
I was a good cook though.
"He’s working a double shift at the café now, you know, because—" I trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.
I hoped she understood it was because of her brother.
"And that’s my brother’s fault?" she asked.
Something told me she didn’t believe it was her brother’s fault.
I didn’t respond.
I just stood in front of her with my hands clasped in front of my abdomen.

"Now because of you he is doing shifts after shifts. So who will play games with me now?" Gigi hissed, shooting me a deadly glare.
I was a little confused, though I didn’t say anything.
I’d heard that Gigi hated playing video games, so why was she always at our house, playing with my brother for hours?
Was she the one taking up his time?
Or was she doing it to impress him and make him think they were compatible?
Even if she didn’t, knowing my brother, he would still love and care for her.
He would still consider her his best friend.
"Can I get you something to drink?" I asked again.
She looked up from her phone and grunted.
"Fine. Get me—" She paused, her eyes wandering as though she were thinking. "Come sit over here. I need to talk to you," she added, almost in a hurry.
I walked over and sat beside her on the couch.
This was the first time she had let me sit with her, at least when my brother wasn’t around.
I’d noticed the difference.
She treated me well whenever he was there, but when he wasn’t, she said things that would make anyone think she didn’t like me.
"Verity, you know your brother has the potential to become anything he wants in life, right?" she asked, reaching over to gently tuck the loose strands of my hair behind my shoulder.
It was the first time she had touched me so gently.
"I know. He’s the best," I replied, smiling at the thought of my brother.
He really was a hard worker, so whenever someone praised him, I couldn’t help agreeing.
"Do you know what’s holding him back?" she asked, blinking slowly.
My heart skipped a beat.
"You."
The way she said it made me feel as though my heart had stopped completely.
"You’re the reason he can’t move forward. You’re a liability, a burden on him, Verity," she continued in a soft voice.
Then she began pointing out everything he spent on me, all the money he used for my needs.

She told me he could have saved it for himself and studied to become a doctor.
"Think about it. If he had spent this much money on any warrior, they would have helped him grow stronger. But instead, he’s stuck with you." She sighed, shaking her head as she looked down.
"You know what you should do?" she asked, immediately lifting my chin and straightening my posture.
I sat up straighter because I wanted to help my brother too. He had done so much for me.
"Why don’t you just go away? Leave him."
My jaw dropped. My eyes filled with tears.
"But I don’t want to. He’s my brother. He’s my family," I said, my voice breaking as my lips trembled.
"Oh, come on. He won’t die in your absence. See? You’re still thinking about yourself," she mocked.
Then she raised her voice before visibly calming herself, lifting her hands and taking a few deep breaths.
"Either you can be selfish, or you can do your brother a favor. Leave him a letter saying you’re checking yourself into an orphanage. Just do it for him. He’s done so much for you."
Her words sank deep into my heart.
The next few minutes passed in a blur. I don’t even know what happened.
I’m not sure whether I agreed or not. Everything happened so quickly.
She helped me to my feet, took me to my room, and had me pack my belongings.
I wanted to stay with my brother, but she made me write a letter.
At one point, I started to believe she was right.
My brother deserved a free life. He shouldn’t have to carry the responsibility of raising a child.
A girl who was about to become a teenager and would only have more needs.
So she was right.
She gave me some money and drove me to a bus stop.
She didn’t know where I was going.
I wasn’t going to an orphanage.
I was going back home to my mom.
End Of Flashback:

I kept my phone off for the entire day.
When I got home and rested, I woke up the next day feeling refreshed.
I remembered their address, the message Jaguar had sent me, and the time Theodore had told me to come meet their grandmother.
I was more than ready for this day.
I mean, if I worked until two at the office, then went straight to their house to care for their grandmother until five, that would mean spending much more time with them.
As for the rest, I wasn’t going to rest until I had made their lives miserable.
I hadn’t opened my phone because I was avoiding Roman.
The next time we talked, I was going to tell him an exaggerated story about what had happened to me.
Deep down, he would know it had all happened because of his drugs, but I had to play it cool.
I couldn’t fight every battle at the same time.
I got dressed in a beautiful beige dress, slipped into a pair of white heels, and curled my hair before securing it with a pretty clip at the back of my head, leaving a few loose strands framing my face.
Carrying my white purse, I set off for the Alpha King’s mansion.
