Chapter 112: 112-Always In My Brother’s Arms.

Jaguar:

The last time I had been to her place, I had asked her to change the keypad code for her own security.

But when I arrived this time and stood outside the door, I realized she had changed the code again.

That alone did not sit well with me. She was not as naive as I had thought.

"But did she ever say she was naive or stupid?" my wolf remarked.

I don’t know why I was so emotional. There was definitely something wrong with me, and I just couldn’t understand what it was.

I was taking everything about her literally too seriously.

I had the duplicate key to her house.

That still worked, but there was another lock that I did not have a key for. That was new.

The moment I reached into my pocket to check, my body stiffened when I heard a voice in front of me.

"Good day, you are the Alpha King, right?"

I slowly pulled my hand back out of my pocket, turned around, and smiled at Mrs. Baker.

"Yeah, you remembered me," I said almost idiotically.

Of course she did.

There was no way someone would break into a house and not remember Alpha King sitting in a bed with their neighbor.

"I’m just surprised to see you here," she said with a smile, holding up a basket of fresh croissants. "I baked these for Verity," she added, watching my face the entire time.

"Yeah, but she’s not home," I replied with a smile.

She looked me in the eye as though there was something she wanted to say.

"Oh, um–I thought you’d have a key to her apartment. I mean, you were dating her, right?"

The moment she said that, my heart sank.

Why would she assume I was dating Verity?

"Oh, um, yeah– it’s, um–" I started to stammer.

"I understand. People usually keep things quiet until they make it official. Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone," she said cheerfully, making a zipping motion across her lips.

"Actually, we were supposed to meet today, but I guess she’s running late," I said awkwardly. "But I do have a key. I just don’t know the passcode to her place." I held up the key, explaining that she had already given me one but had forgotten to tell me the passcode.

"You don’t happen to know the passcode, right?"

The moment I asked that, I watched her gulp before nodding.

"Yeah. I—I know the passcode," she replied, quickly composing herself in front of me.

Then she entered the passcode.

It felt as though my heart had started beating again.

The door unlocked, and she gestured for me to go inside, almost as though it were her own home.

I followed her in, hoping Verity wouldn’t come back and find us inside her apartment.

She would lose her mind all over again and start screaming at me.

Lately, all I had been doing was disappointing her.

Once we got inside, she immediately placed the basket in the middle of the table and gestured for me to sit on the couch, as though she owned the place as much as Verity did.

So I sat down, acting as if I belonged there, as if I wasn’t just sneaking in.

"Actually—" I began.

She kept smiling at me, giving me a strange look that made me uncomfortable under her steady gaze.

"Some stuff happened between us. We kind of drifted apart," I said, trying to make up an excuse.

"Right. That’s why—" she paused, making me curious.

"That’s why what?" I asked.

She took a deep breath.

"I don’t want to say it. I mean, I’m her aunt, but sometimes even I don’t agree with her lifestyle. She’s a little too bold, and I don’t like it. You know, women these days need to be very careful about how they live their lives."

She let out a dramatic sigh before shaking her head.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I understand you want a woman from the omega community because they’re pure, innocent, and different. I’m just not sure Verity is all that."

The moment she said those words, I tilted my head.

"She’s been bringing men home, and I hate to say it, but it’s just one man after another. Yesterday there was a long-haired man with a huge build, but he was in such a hurry that I couldn’t see his face clearly. Before him, there was another clean-cut blond guy."

As she spoke, I understood who both men were.

One was Ragnar and the other one was Roman, the man she was dating.

"Can you tell me anything about that clean-cut guy?" I asked, adjusting myself in my seat.

"Oh, the doctor."

It was as though she already knew exactly who he was.

The blond, clean-cut man. She was only pretending otherwise, trying to stir the pot.

Did she really care about Verity?

I mean, Verity had told me she did. Verity cared about her. Verity even loved her.

"He’s a doctor," she replied.

I kept staring at her. Just a moment ago, she had acted as though she barely knew him.

"All right. Anyway, thank you so much. I’ll let her know you stopped by," I said, gesturing toward the door.

She nodded and started to walk away, but then paused, turned around, and smiled at me.

"Did Verity speak to you about my son-in-law?" she asked and I shook my head.

"No, we haven’t been talking much lately," I replied. "Maybe she’ll tell me about him today. What’s it about?"

I slowly leaned back against the couch as I waited for her answer.

"I wanted—well, I had asked, or rather requested, Verity to ask you to get him a job." She looked at me with a sad pout. "He can do anything. He’s a very trustworthy man."

The moment she said that, an idea popped into my head.

"Give me his number. I’ll call him soon."

The moment I said it, it was as though she had been carrying his number in her pocket the whole time.

She quickly placed it on the table before hurrying out.

I remained in the living room, thinking about my plans and my next steps.

About ten minutes later, just as I was getting up from the couch, I heard a car pull up outside.

I walked over to the window and saw Ragnar.

He was carrying Verity.

Again!

Panic struck me.

I looked around before rushing into the bedroom. I opened one of the large walk-in closets and hid inside.

What happened next was the most bizarre shit I had ever witnessed.
