Chapter 100: 100-He Likes Being Rough
Verity:
"I’m only tolerating this because you’re hallucinating."
He pointed a finger at me as he spoke.
At that moment, I realized Ragnar was furious.
His calm composure could crack at any second.
He didn’t need to raise his voice to be intimidating.
He simply was.
"Loser."
I didn’t know why I said it.
But the instant the word left my lips, his hand shot to the back of my head.
His fingers buried themselves in my hair before he yanked me toward him, forcing my head back until my neck stretched painfully.
"Say it again," he demanded.
It was the closest we had ever been.
He gave my head another sharp tug.
My hands shot forward, clutching the front of his shirt for support.
"Verity," he muttered, bringing his face even closer to mine, "you don’t know me."
His grip tightened again.
Pain shot through my scalp, forcing my eyes shut as tears gathered at the corners.
"Just because I’m a gentleman doesn’t mean I can’t be a devil," he hissed before finally letting me go.
I stumbled backward, rubbing the back of my neck.
I wasn’t just scared.
I was tempted.
I ran my fingers through my hair, trying to soothe the lingering ache, when I felt him approach me again.
"You should lie down."
I could hear the guilt in his voice.
Not because he regretted what he had said to me, but because he was probably shocked that he had lost his composure in the first place.
I didn’t argue.
Instead, I simply raised a hand toward him before letting my knees give out beneath me.
He immediately realized I was falling.
One arm wrapped around my back to catch me.
In his rush, however, he didn’t realize his hand landed against the side of my breast, accidentally grabbing it.
Almost at the same time, his other arm slid beneath my hips to lift me.
He had no choice but to uncurl his fingers from the side of my breast, but as he adjusted his grip, his palm still brushed against it.
Without saying a word, he carried me back to my room.
I was fully awake.
I just made sure he didn’t know it.
He laid me down on the bed.
I kept my eyes barely open, giving him the impression that I was still completely out of it.
A moment later, I guessed he noticed my neck was bent awkwardly against the headboard.
He climbed onto the bed to straighten my head and slide a pillow beneath it.
As he leaned over me, he unknowingly placed one knee between my legs.
I shifted ever so slightly on purpose.
Then I felt it.
His knee pressed firmly against my pussy.
The contact made my fingers curl.
He froze as well.
I felt it immediately.
He looked down before quickly pulling his knee away.
He didn’t even finish adjusting the pillow.
Instead, he hurried off the bed.
I watched him stand there in silence, his eyes repeatedly dropping to the knee that had been between my legs.
Then he slowly took a few steps backward.
Without another word, he turned around and hurried out of the room.
Once he was gone, I adjusted my head comfortably against the pillow.
The bite mark on my back had truly exhausted me.
Whether I wanted to admit it or not, I was no longer pretending.
I closed my eyes and let sleep take over.
I ended up sleeping for a few hours.
By the time I woke up, the weather had improved. It was still drizzling, but dawn was just beginning to break.
I got out of bed, went into the bathroom, and took a shower.
The bite mark looked bad.
I’d have to get it cleaned properly at the hospital the next day.
For now, I changed into my silk gown before walking out of my room and settling onto the couch with my phone in my hand.
This was my white phone, the one that contained all the important information and every contact I never wanted anyone else to know about.
Ragnar had definitely taken my other phone by accident.
And I was definitely going to take full advantage of that little mistake.
For now, though, I couldn’t help scrolling through the photos of my brother and me together.
Then a message popped up on the screen.
Julia: Hey, Verity. How are you doing?
My eyes immediately filled with tears.
The message reminded me of everything that had happened the last time we spoke.
And of how I had left my old life behind.
This was my old phone number.
The one I used to use to talk to Justin.
The one where I would chat with Julia, his colleague.
The one where Gigi used to text me, asking where my brother was.
And the one where Oliver used to bully me.
There were too many secrets buried inside this phone.
Sometimes, I would open Gigi’s chat, trying to figure out when she had stopped loving my brother.
It drove me crazy.
And since I was restless, I was going to make her restless too.
While I was lost in thought, another message popped up on my screen.
It made my heart skip a beat.
Him: I’ve been thinking about you.
My jaw immediately clenched.
Then another message came.
Him: Your mother is sick.
My back instantly stiffened at the words.
Then another one appeared.
Him: She has been asking about you.
Him: Don’t you want to see her at all?
Him: If you change your mind, just let me know.
Him: Hopefully, you’ll come see your mother one last time.
I lowered my phone and buried my face in my hands.
I didn’t know what I was feeling.
What did he mean my mother was sick?
And what the fuck did he mean by one last time?
There were too many thoughts racing through my mind.
Part of me wanted to call her.
Part of me wanted to ignore her completely.
But something inside me had shifted after reading those messages.
I just wanted to know if she felt even the slightest bit guilty for what she had done to us.
So, for the first time in what felt like forever, I decided to reply.
Me: Tell her I’m coming to see her.
That was all I wrote before tears began streaming down my face.
