Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Everyone Has Their Own Fate
Not far off, the village chief sighed as he looked toward the Gu Family. "The family of Gu the Second is finally doing well."
The village chief’s wife, Aunt Liu, deftly packed their things. "Isn’t that the truth? Ever since that girl, Little Fei, came back, their family’s fortunes have changed day by day. They’re living a life that makes you green with envy!"
The village chief nodded. "That girl, Little Fei, is a fortunate one. It’s a shame my Shanyao is still so young. If he weren’t, I’d get them engaged. Then we wouldn’t have a single worry in the world."
Aunt Liu snorted. "In your dreams! Even if your grandson were her age, he wouldn’t be good enough for her!"
"Little Fei is literate, she can earn money, and she knows how to cook. What can your grandson do?"
"Besides, from reading her face, I can guarantee she’s destined for great things!"
The village chief looked at his wife. "Really?"
Her grandfather had been a professional face-reader and fortune-teller. With such a family tradition, she had picked up a thing or two herself.
Aunt Liu nodded. "That girl has a straight, high nose bridge—she’s sure to find a good husband. And her chin is full, meaning she’ll attract wealth. You just watch, that girl has a great future ahead of her."
The village chief’s eyes glinted. ’Looks like we’ll have to get on even better terms with Gu Zhang’s family in the future.’
After everyone ate, they packed up and set out on the road again.
They hadn’t been on the road for long when Gu Fei heard Ms. Qian shouting, "Go on, shoo! What are you following us for? Are you still after our family’s food?"
Gu Fei looked over and saw Lian’er’s mother and younger brother, each carrying a bundle on their back, trailing alongside the column of carts.
The woman kept her head down, not saying a word, while the little boy glared furiously at Ms. Qian.
Gu Fei watched with a cold expression. The village chief snapped, "Ms. Qian, how are they getting in your way? Do you own this road or something? Just walk and mind your own business!"
Ms. Qian didn’t dare talk back to the village chief. Instead, she shot a vicious glare at the mother and son, then turned and slapped Lian’er across the face. "Carry Bao’er and get moving, you useless thing!"
Lian’er silently crouched down. Bao’er climbed onto her back and smacked her on the head. "Riding a big horsey! Faster, faster! Giddy-up—giddy-up—"
Tears streamed down the mother’s face as she watched Lian’er in a daze. She stood rooted to the spot for a long moment before gritting her teeth and hurrying to catch up with the carts.
Gu Fei watched for a long time, utterly speechless.
Beside her, Uncle Ma patted her shoulder. "Come on. Everyone has their own destiny. You can help them for a while, but you can’t help them for a lifetime."
Gu Fei walked on in silence.
Everyone was thirsty, so they hurried on their way. Within an hour, they reached the place Uncle Ma had told them about.
Uncle Ma looked around and pointed to a small earthen hill by the side of the road. "This is it. There’s a small river just over this hill."
Everyone let out a cheer. They stopped the mule carts and scrambled up the small hill, each trying to be the first.
Tie Niu, Eldest Aunt’s grandson, was running at the front and had already reached the crest of the hill. He yelled, "There’s water! There’s really water!"
This made the crowd even more frantic. Gu Zhang quickly called to his sons, "Unhitch the mules and lead them over to get a good drink."
Uncle Ma was as steady as an old hound, standing perfectly still. Gu Fei stood beside him, unmoving as well.
Uncle Ma glanced at her. "Aren’t you going to hurry and fetch some water?"
Gu Fei blinked. "You haven’t gone either, have you, sir? If everyone goes, who’s going to watch the carts?"
Uncle Ma burst out laughing. "And what good would a little girl like you be?"
"Alright then," he chuckled. "The two of us will stand guard here for now."
