Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Delicious

Quick as a flash, Gu Sanlang snatched up the bowl of snake meat and held it high.

Bao’er stood in front of Gu Sanlang, jumping up and down as he tried to reach the bowl.

Gu Sanlang glared at him. "Get lost! Why do you always have to snatch at everything?"

"I want some! I want some! Third Brother, I’m begging you, just give me one piece!"

Gu Fei sighed. ’To think he’s learned to beg just for a bite to eat. The kid’s got it rough.’

Gu Sanlang rapped him on the head, then picked out a piece of snake meat and handed it to Bao’er. "Just one piece. There’s no more for you. Go eat it somewhere else!"

Bao’er cradled the snake meat in his hands. It was so hot he kept tossing it from his left hand to his right. A moment later, he was gnawing on it.

With that settled, the meal began in earnest.

Gu Qing tried to help the old matriarch over, but she waved her hands dismissively. "I’m not eating that thing. I don’t even want to look at it."

The members of the Gu Family squatted around the wooden plank as Mrs. Chen handed each of them a bun.

Uncle Ma eagerly picked up a piece of snake meat. He took a bite, his eyes narrowing as he savored the taste. A moment later, he gave Gu Fei a thumbs-up. "This is absolutely incredible! Even the head chef at the Piaoxiang Building in the Capital City is only on this level."

He took another bite, hissing, "Spicy. A little spicy."

Gu Fei quickly grabbed a piece for herself. Eating her bun with the red-braised snake was pure bliss.

Lan Zhi didn’t dare to eat either, so she moved off to the side.

Li Chunhua quickly gave a piece to Little Cao before taking one for herself. She was a little scared too, but ’it was made by my sister-in-law, so it has to be delicious. I’ll risk it and give it a try.’

Little Cao, having no concept of fear, simply picked it up and started gnawing.

Bao’er had already finished his piece. His mouth on fire from the spice, he was pestering his mother for water.

After a gulp of water, Bao’er ran back. Everyone, a little annoyed with him now, shifted from side to side, blocking him from squeezing his way in.

Bao’er, on the verge of tears, cried, "I want snake! I want snake!"

Gu Fei shot him a glare, then placed two pieces in an empty bowl. She ran over to where his family was, dropped the bowl, and dashed back.

By the time she got back, the entire bowl of snake was gone, leaving only some of the sauce.

Quick as a flash, Gu Fei swirled the bun she was holding around the bowl, soaking up the rich sauce. She took a bite. Absolutely divine.

Gu Sanlang, seizing the opportunity, saw the last bit of sauce at the bottom of the bowl. He quickly took his bun and meticulously wiped the bowl clean.

He wiped it until the bowl was so clean and shiny it didn’t even need washing. Only then did Gu Sanlang reluctantly pull his hand away, still not fully satisfied.

Mrs. Chen mumbled through her last mouthful of snake meat, "Little Fei, how did you get so good at cooking? I had snake once when I was young, and it was nowhere near this tasty."

Gu Fei sighed. "Mom, this is nothing, really. The conditions are primitive and we don’t have all the right seasonings, so we’re just making do. Once we get to the south and settle down, I’ll cook delicious meals for you every day."

Mrs. Chen beamed. "Then I’ll be in for a real treat."

Little Cao’s mouth was bright red from the spice, and she was also looking for her mother, wanting water.

Gu Fei stroked her head. "Auntie forgot you’re still too little for spicy food, Little Cao. Next time, I’ll make something not spicy for you."

Little Cao pouted and hissed, "Spicy’s good! Little Cao wants spicy!"

Gu Rong’s face was gleaming with oil from the meal. "Little Fei, your cooking is out of this world! From now on, your uncle will go catch snakes for you every day!"

Just then, Boss Zhang sidled over, swallowing hard. "Gu Rong, where’d you catch this snake?"

Gu Rong shot him a sideways glance. "Where do you think? Right here. Gu Qing spotted it last night while you were dozing off, and I’m the one who killed it."

Boss Zhang’s face was a mask of regret. ’Why did I have to fall asleep? If I hadn’t, that snake might have been mine!’

Sigh—
