Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Having Nothing to Fear

Bao’er cried out, pointing at Little Cao, "You have some! What’s that in Little Cao’s mouth? Why did you give her one and not me!"

Gu Fei snorted, not wanting to deal with him, and walked off to the side.

Bao’er started rolling on the ground again, wailing as he rolled, "Give me candy! I want candy—"

The noise was giving Gu Fei a headache, but she didn’t want to yield to the boy’s tyrannical tantrum, so she simply ducked into the mule cart.

Ms. Qian heard the commotion and came over to pull Bao’er up. "Oh, my little ancestor, stop rolling around. There’s no water to wash your clothes right now."

"I want it, I want it! I’m not getting up until you give me candy." Seeing his mother had arrived, Bao’er rolled around with even more gusto.

Inside the cart, the old woman looked at Gu Fei, seeming to want to say something but holding back. She lifted the curtain and glanced out. Seeing Bao’er covered in dirt, she couldn’t help but turn back to Gu Fei and say, "If you have any more, just give him one. It’s only a piece of candy."

Gu Fei said coolly, "You all are the ones who’ve spoiled him like this. No other family’s child acts like him."

"Right now, it’s just a piece of candy, which the family can afford. But what if he wants something else in the future that we can’t afford? What then? Will he steal? Rob people?"

The old woman was not pleased. "What a way to talk. Bao’er is your younger brother, too. Besides, he’s still young. He’ll naturally learn to behave when he’s older."

Gu Fei pressed her lips together and said nothing. She wasn’t giving in, no matter what. She refused to indulge a brat like him.

’Hmph, I shouldn’t have given him one yesterday!’

’No more being soft-hearted.’

After resting for nearly a quarter of an hour, Uncle Ma called out, "Let’s go! Anyone who needs to be on a cart, get on now."

Bao’er was still rolling on the ground. Ms. Qian couldn’t bring herself to lay a finger on him, so she angrily shouted at Gu Zhong, "Do something about him! We’re about to leave, and he still won’t get up."

Gu Zhong prized his only son dearly. He pulled Bao’er up. "What’s so good about candy? When we get to the market town tonight, Father will buy you whatever you want to eat."

As Gu Zhong dragged him forward, Bao’er kept trying to pull back. "No! I just want candy! That candy is the best!"

As they spoke, Gu Fei’s mule cart went past them with a CLIP-CLOP-CLIP-CLOP.

Gu Zhong quickly tried to placate him. "Look, Little Fei is already leaving. If we don’t go now, we won’t be able to catch up."

Bao’er wasn’t having it. Held in his father’s arms, he flailed his arms and legs, hitting him. "I want candy! Go get me some candy—"

Gu Zhong finally lost his patience and gave Bao’er a hard smack on the back of the head. "Where am I supposed to get it for you?"

"Why couldn’t you just be a little smarter and beg Sister Xiao Fei nicely? Damn it, how did I, your old man, end up raising a little debt collector like you!"

Ms. Qian grew anxious. "Husband, hurry up and get on the cart! They’re already far ahead."

Gu Zhong handed Bao’er to Ms. Qian, climbed onto their mule cart, and urged it forward.

Xing’er, seeing her chance, had already scurried ahead, leaving only Ms. Qian and Bao’er behind.

Ms. Qian dragged Bao’er along as he continued to struggle. She finally snapped, "If you cause any more trouble, I’ll leave you right here!"

Bao’er forcefully sniffed the snot that was running toward his mouth back up his nose. "Go on, leave me! If you dare leave me, you’ll let your family line die out!"

Bao’er had often heard his grandmother say, "If your mother hadn’t finally given birth to you, your father’s line would have ended!"

The tone his grandmother used when she said this made Bao’er feel that having the family line end was a truly terrifying thing.

And so, he came to understand his status in the family even more clearly.

Ms. Qian cursed Gu Fei in her head as she forcefully dragged Bao’er forward. She had no choice. He was her only son; she truly didn’t dare to leave him behind.
