Chapter 65: Chapter 65: No 300 Taels of Silver Here

Gu Zhang nodded. "It’s much closer that way, but I heard they’re having floods over there. Sigh, some places are bone-dry from drought, others are drowning in floods. Life is hard everywhere."

The old man waved his hand dismissively. "No need to worry about floods. The waters only rise in the summer. We’re heading into winter now, so even if there were floods, the water would have long since receded."

He mumbled to himself as he mulled it over, ’Looks like we can’t go to West Mountain County. We’ll have to head for Han Zhong County.’

Gu Fei, standing nearby, couldn’t help but think, ’My history textbooks never went into much detail. I have no idea how severe the floods in the south really are. If Han Zhong County actually flooded, there must be a lot of refugees, too.’

’When a dynasty is about to fall, perhaps because its days are numbered, it’s always accompanied by natural disasters and man-made calamities.’

But Gu Fei didn’t try to dissuade the old man from going to Han Zhong County. ’His family only has a single bundle each. They probably don’t have much food left. It would be impossible for them to make it all the way to East Sea County.’

’Han Zhong County borders West Qin County, so it’s not too far. Heading that way might be their only chance of survival.’

Just as she was thinking this, Gu Fei spotted a large, wilted patch of purslane in a field not far from the main road. Her heart leaped with joy.

They had enough grain, and they’d also brought some dried and pickled vegetables, but who would pass up fresh, edible wild greens?

’If we go a few days without vegetables, we’ll get so constipated we can’t even take a shit.’

She dashed over, but before she could even get close, a boy shot past her, reaching the patch in a few strides and rapidly yanking the purslane out to toss into his back basket.

Gu Fei stopped in her tracks. After watching for a moment, she silently turned and walked away.

’That boy is with the old man. They might be depending on those wild greens to survive. My family, at least, still has food.’

Uncle Ma watched from a distance. There was still a lot of purslane left. It was clear that Gu Fei had intended to pick some but had turned back midway, refusing to compete with the boy.

’This girl... she’s kind-hearted after all.’

’Could such a kind young girl really be a spy?’

Uncle Ma didn’t think so.

After they had walked for nearly an hour, Uncle Ma called for everyone to take a break.

Gu Fei took a drink from her waterskin, which was marked with a red thread. Seeing Hu Zi looking listless, she hurried over. "Auntie, you and Hu Zi should get in the cart and rest for a bit."

Ms. Li hesitated. "I... I don’t know about that. I just rested not long ago. Your family has so many people, everyone needs to take turns."

"Besides, your own injuries haven’t fully healed. You should be the one resting. I can still walk."

Gu Fei wouldn’t take no for an answer. She helped her over to their family’s mule cart, lifted the curtain, and had Ms. Li get on.

When it was Hu Zi’s turn to get on, Gu Fei secretly pressed a piece of modern-made beef jerky from her space into his hand and whispered, "Eat this quietly. Don’t tell Bao’er."

Hu Zi clutched the beef jerky tightly and nodded nervously.

Little Cao climbed down from the cart. Gu Fei popped a piece of candy into her mouth and secretly passed another to Li Chunhua.

Then she had Lan Zhi open her mouth and gave her a piece as well.

Gu Fei thought she was being secretive, but she had no idea she couldn’t hide a thing from Uncle Ma, who had been watching her the whole time.

Uncle Ma narrowed his eyes. ’This girl is so secretive about giving someone a piece of candy. Sigh, a little girl will be a little girl. To think a single piece of candy is worth all this fuss.’

Just as he was thinking this, Bao’er ran over, holding his hand out to Gu Fei. "I walked today. Give me some candy."

Gu Fei was growing to detest this kid more and more. Just yesterday, he had snatched her smoked rabbit meat. She said fiercely, "There’s none left. That candy is very precious. There was only one piece left, and I already gave it to you yesterday."

Nearby, Lan Zhi quickly shut her mouth. Little Cao was even more dramatic, clamping a small hand tightly over her own mouth.

’Sigh, poor Little Cao. She’d clearly never heard the saying about protesting too much.’
