Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Young Love
Xing’er sheepishly pulled back her hand and looked around. The straw was nearly all laid out. ’I can’t just go snatching it from someone else, can I?’
Xing’er returned empty-handed. Ms. Qian asked her, "Where’s the straw you were supposed to get?"
"There’s none left," Xing’er said, shaking her head.
Without a word, Ms. Qian slapped Xing’er across the face. "You useless girl! You can’t even handle a simple task like this. What good are you?"
Clutching her face, Xing’er ran out crying.
She was already fourteen or fifteen, and a girl her age cared about her dignity. With so many people watching, it was utterly mortifying.
Shanzi watched Xing’er run out. He hesitated for a moment, then put down the straw in his hands and started to leave. Shanzimama’s voice drifted over, "Shanzi, what are you doing? Hurry and help your mother with the bedding."
Shanzi sullenly grunted in reply, then turned, took the mattress, and started spreading it on the sleeping platform.
A glint appeared in Shanzimama’s eyes.
She was well aware of her son’s little crush.
But she didn’t approve of Xing’er.
’Xing’er can’t compare to Little Fei in any respect, not to mention she has a shit-stirrer for a mother like Ms. Qian.’
Gu Fei was her ideal choice for a daughter-in-law. She might be a bit delicate, but she could earn money—and that was more important than anything else.
Shanzimama considered her family’s circumstances to be quite good.
Although her husband had been hit and killed by a carriage in the city last year, the carriage’s owner had been decent enough to compensate their family with twenty taels of silver. Her family had always been on solid footing, and with few mouths to feed, their expenses were low. Over the years, she had managed to save up dozens of taels of silver.
She believed that within the village, her family was second only to the village chief’s house, making them a perfect match for Gu the Second’s household.
Once the mattress was spread out, Shanzimama went to sleep.
The day had been exhausting, and she began to snore the moment she lay down.
Hearing his mother snoring loudly, Shanzi quickly got up and ran outside. He searched around and found Xing’er at the base of the earthen wall.
Xing’er heard the movement behind her and glanced back, wiping away her tears. "What are you doing here?"
Shanzi stammered for a moment, unable to get a single word out. Then, as if remembering something, he pulled a hard-boiled egg from inside his shirt. "Here, for you."
Xing’er stared at the egg and swallowed without realizing it. She turned away haughtily. "I don’t want it. You can have it."
Without taking no for an answer, Shanzi grabbed her hand and pressed the egg into her palm. "It’s windy out. Eat this and get back inside."
With that, Shanzi quickly ran off.
As he ran, his mind was in a whirl. ’I held her hand. I just held her hand!’
’I can’t quite describe the feeling, only that my heart feels like it’s about to leap out of my chest.’
Xing’er clutched the egg in her hand. It was still warm with Shanzi’s body heat.
Xing’er’s face flushed. She scoffed softly. Just as she was about to tuck the egg into her shirt, she suddenly thought of Bao’er. Her expression darkened. She quickly peeled the egg and shoved it into her mouth.
’It’s delicious!’
Early the next morning, Gu Fei didn’t notice it at first. But after taking a few steps, she felt as if lead weights were tied to her calves. They were sore and aching, and she could barely lift her legs.
Seeing her like this, Mrs. Chen smacked her own forehead. "Look at me, I completely forgot."
She rummaged around and found two strips of cloth, had Gu Fei sit down, and began to wrap them around her legs.
Gu Fei asked curiously, "Mother, why are you wrapping up my legs?"
Mrs. Chen replied as she worked, "Wrapping them keeps your legs from hurting when you walk a long way. I don’t know the reasoning behind it, but it’s what the elders have always passed down."
