Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Aching All Over

Gu Fei reached out to soothe Mrs. Chen, whispering, "Mom, don’t be angry. Next time you see that boy coming, just have our brothers pick up their bowls so he can’t snatch anything."

Mrs. Chen chuckled at Gu Fei’s words and shook her head. "I’ve never seen a child like him."

And wasn’t it the truth? Hu Zi was about the same age as Bao’er, yet he sat there properly eating his buckwheat gruel, not running around at all.

That Bao’er was truly being spoiled rotten by Ms. Qian.

After the meal, Mrs. Chen had Er Lang and Sanlang fetch and heat some water. Once it was hot, she had the two of them carry it up to the inn room for Gu Fei to take a bath.

The old madam watched with envy and couldn’t help but mutter, "This girl is raised far too delicately. We barely have enough water to drink, yet she gets a bath? That’s one hundred cents a bucket!"

While adding firewood to the stove, Mrs. Chen said calmly, "In any case, it’s the silver Little Fei earned herself. She can spend it however she wants."

The old madam was left speechless.

’There’s no way I can go back to the eldest’s family now,’ she thought. ’Ms. Qian doesn’t want me there. For the rest of this journey, at least, I’ll have to stick with the second son’s family.’

’Fine, fine. I’ll just have to turn a blind eye.’

The old madam convinced herself of this and snapped her mouth shut.

The wounds on Gu Fei’s back had already scabbed over. She took out her shampoo and shower gel and took a long, satisfying bath. The dirty water Er Lang and Sanlang carried out was pitch-black; even Gu Fei herself couldn’t bear to look at it.

After her bath, Lan Zhi helped dry Gu Fei’s hair while Mrs. Chen and Li Chunhua laid out the bedding on the floor.

Fortunately, the room had wooden floorboards, so it wasn’t too cold or damp. It would be manageable to sleep there.

After her bath, Gu Fei sat down on the pallet Mrs. Chen had laid out on the floor. Looking at the soles of her feet, she cried out, "Mom, I’ve got blisters!"

Mrs. Chen hurried over and cupped Gu Fei’s foot in her hands. "Oh, my poor girl, you’ve suffered so much. Wait here, I’ll get a needle and lance them for you. It’ll be too hard to walk if we don’t."

Lan Zhi then added in a pitiful voice, "I have them on my feet too."

Mrs. Chen sighed. "I’ll lance yours in a moment, too."

Lying on the bed, the old madam muttered, "So delicate." She rolled over. Ouch—her whole body ached.

Gu Fei had a shiny blister on the sole of each foot. Mrs. Chen found a needle, sterilized it in the candle flame, and deftly lanced them.

Gu Fei glanced over and saw her grandmother sleeping with her back to them. She quickly took some ointment from her space and applied it.

After Lan Zhi’s blisters were also lanced, Gu Fei put some ointment on them for her and tossed her two cloth towels. "Wrap your feet with these so the ointment doesn’t rub off."

"It’ll be more comfortable to walk tomorrow if they’re wrapped."

Downstairs in the large common room, it was chaos.

The common room consisted of two adjoining spaces. A long, earthen sleeping platform ran along the wall beneath the windows, with straw piled haphazardly on top of it.

Other than Gu Fei, who had rented a private room, all the other families had opted for the common room.

Ms. Qian was ordering Xing’er to grab more straw. A thicker layer of straw would be warmer, and it wouldn’t be so hard to sleep on.

Xing’er saw that the spot their family had claimed was already covered with a good amount of straw, but Ms. Qian was still rushing her. "Hurry up! Bring another armful of straw over here."

Xing’er hesitated before making her way toward the head of the sleeping platform, where a large pile of straw was stacked against the wall.

When she got there, Xing’er had just reached for a handful of straw when the great-aunt’s granddaughter, Ju Hua, glared at her. "What do you think you’re doing? We’re using this!"
