Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Parting

Before long, two mule carts from the village chief’s house arrived.

Boss Zhang also arrived, driving his horse-drawn cart.

The entrance to the village was packed with carts and people.

Not only were those leaving gathered here, but even those staying behind had crowded around to watch the commotion.

Most of them were filled with utter panic.

Seeing these families packing up their entire households, taking everything they owned to leave, those staying behind suddenly wondered if they were making a mistake. Perhaps they should be leaving with them.

Hu Zi was being pulled aside by a few of his playmates. "Hu Zi," one asked, "when you leave, when will you come back?"

Hu Zi shook his head. "Dad didn’t say. I don’t know."

A little boy burst into tears, hugging Hu Zi tightly. "I won’t let you go! If you leave, I’ll have no one to play with."

Hu Zi started crying too. "WAHHH... It’s my dad who wants to leave. I don’t want to leave either."

Ms. Qian was also crying while embracing her two daughters. Her girls, Taotao and Li’er, had been married off long ago. They had wanted to leave with their mother’s family, but their in-laws refused to go. What could they do? They had rushed over early this morning just to see their family off.

In the midst of this tearful commotion, Gu Qing and Gu Erlang appeared, carrying their grandmother.

The old woman struggled, shouting, "I’m not going! I won’t go, even if it kills me! Where are you taking me!"

They were literally carrying her, one grabbing her arms and the other her legs. Reaching the cart, they asked Gu Zhang, "Father, where should we put Grandma?"

Gu Fei quickly scrambled down from the cart and held the curtain open.

With a grunt of effort, Gu Qing and Gu Erlang tossed their grandmother into the cart.

At that, Gu Zhang roared, "Move out!"

Mrs. Chen was still by the roadside saying her goodbyes to a few close friends from the village. The moment she heard the command to "Move out," tears streamed down her face. She clutched her friends’ hands. "If it still hasn’t rained by next spring, you must hurry south. Don’t you dare delay."

Ms. Li pulled Hu Zi away from his playmates. "We’re leaving now, we’re leaving. Don’t cry. When you’re older, you can come back and visit them."

Li Chunhua was still weeping in her mother’s arms. Her mother gave her a gentle push. "Go on now. Live a good life with your husband. Send word back once you’re settled."

Wiping away their tears, they left the village entrance, looking back again and again, reluctant to part.

They had to first enter the city to meet up with Gu Sanlang, Eldest Sister Gu, and Uncle Ma, then exit through the East City Gate and get on the Upper Official Road.

The journey from the village to the city normally took an hour by horse cart; on foot, it would take far longer.

The mule carts were packed with belongings, so everyone had to walk.

Gu Fei helped Lan Zhi along. This was the first time Lan Zhi had ever walked so far. Gu Fei had made such journeys in her past life, but this body had grown delicate after eight years in the Marquis Mansion. Besides, the wound on her back hadn’t fully healed.

They weren’t even halfway there when Mrs. Chen came over. "Little Fei, stop walking. Get in the cart and rest."

Gu Fei shook her head. "I’m fine, Mom. Have Eldest Brother put Little Cao in the cart instead."

Her legs already felt like lead, but she knew she had to keep going. ’This journey is thousands of miles long, and it’s only just begun. I have to get used to this as quickly as possible.’

The mule carts couldn’t carry many people. At best, everyone could take turns getting on to rest for a bit.

Lan Zhi was in even worse shape than Gu Fei.

As a delicate Miss of the Marquis Mansion, the furthest she usually walked was a stroll around the gardens. She had never traveled so far on foot. Despite the mild mid-September weather, her forehead was beaded with sweat.

Every few steps, she would ask Gu Fei, "How much longer until we get to the city?"

Gu Fei would always reply, "Almost there, almost there. Just hang on a little longer."

After walking for nearly two hours, they finally entered the city.

Aside from Gu Fei and Lan Zhi, no one else felt the least bit tired. To villagers, a two-hour walk was nothing.

When they reached the East City Gate, Gu Sanlang was waiting with a mule cart, and Gu Fei’s eldest aunt’s husband was driving another.

Her eldest aunt’s two sons had brought two more mule carts.

Gu Qing went forward to take the reins from his aunt’s husband.

Uncle Ma, a bundle on his back, was also standing by the gate. His gaze swept over Gu Fei, trying to remain unnoticed.
