Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Pandemonium
Gu Fei had no choice but to get up and get dressed.
She walked into the courtyard and fetched some water to wash up, only to hear a ruckus erupting from the neighboring homes.
Her eldest uncle was shouting, "Kill the chickens, quickly! They’ll be a hassle on the road."
"We can’t kill them! Bao’er needs to eat an egg every day. If we kill the chickens, Bao’er won’t have any eggs to eat," Ms. Qian said as she tied the chickens’ feet and tossed them onto the oxcart.
Her younger uncle’s dog, Ah Huang, was barking wildly. The younger uncle snapped, "Stop barking! Keep barking and I’ll kill you."
The dog whimpered pitifully.
Her own family wasn’t much better off. Mrs. Chen was directing Gu Qing and Gu Erlang to move the water vat from the entrance onto the mule cart.
Gu Fei couldn’t help but shout, "Mom, we don’t need to take that, do we? That thing is dead heavy. The mule will collapse."
"Well..." Mrs. Chen looked at the mule, then at the water vat. She suddenly leaned close to Gu Fei and whispered, "Don’t you have that place where you can store things? Why don’t you... put this in there too?"
Gu Fei looked at the vat and sighed. "Fine."
With a flash of thought, the water vat instantly vanished into her space.
Gu Qing and Gu Erlang stared blankly at their own empty hands, then back at their sister. If they hadn’t been mentally prepared for this beforehand, they would have screamed, "Ghost!"
Mrs. Chen, however, started laughing. "No, no, that’s not right. We should have stuffed it full before you put it away. Take it out so I can put more things inside."
Gu Fei looked at her mother helplessly and had no choice but to move the water vat out again.
Mrs. Chen cheerfully ran inside to grab things. Gu Fei’s sharp eyes caught her mother stuffing a few old, torn rags into the vat. Her lips twitched, and she turned to leave. "Mom, just call me when you’re done."
When Gu Fei came out again, the courtyard was piled high with things: the water vat, bedding and luggage, oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar, a kang cabinet, and even the family’s broken table and rickety stools.
Mrs. Chen watched as Gu Fei stored everything away, beaming with delight. "This is great! Now that we’ve freed up a mule cart, you and Little Cao can ride in it. Your injury hasn’t healed yet, so you can’t walk."
Once everything was packed and ready, Gu Qing drove the mule cart toward the village entrance. Seeing this, the younger uncle’s family next door hurriedly brought out the new mule cart they had bought with money borrowed from Gu Fei.
The two mule carts passed by the eldest uncle’s house. Ms. Qian saw them and froze for a moment. "They’re leaving already? I’m not done packing yet!"
She shrieked at the top of her lungs, "Husband! Hurry up! It’s time to go! Go drive the cart!"
"Bao’er, my dear Bao’er, get up, stop sleeping!"
Before long, all the families in the village who were leaving had driven their carts to the entrance.
Shanzimama jumped down from her mule cart, walked over to the Gu Family, and looked around. She asked Mrs. Chen, "Where’s your Little Fei?"
Mrs. Chen pursed her lips toward the cart. "She’s in the cart. Her injury isn’t healed, so she can’t walk."
Shanzimama lifted the curtain to take a look. Inside the spacious mule cart, several thick mattresses were laid out, and Gu Fei was lying there on her stomach, perfectly at ease.
Shanzimama lowered the curtain, secretly marveling at the Gu Family’s favoritism toward this girl, Gu Fei. Then a thought occurred to her. "Where are your family’s things?"
"You’re not bringing anything? You must at least have grain!"
A glint flashed in Mrs. Chen’s eyes. "We brought things. My Sanlang is in the city, and we have two more carts there. All our things are on them."
Shanzimama clucked her tongue in amazement. "Two more carts! Your family has really struck it rich."
Just as she said that, Gu Zhong drove up in his mule cart and shouted to Gu Zhang, "Mother refuses to leave! She’s making a scene at home. What should we do?"
Gu Zhang glanced at Gu Qing and Er Lang. "Go. Carry your grandmother here."
Gu Qing and Er Lang tore off at a run.
