Chapter 33: Chapter 33: When Did You Seduce a Man?
Stone closed the door. Gu Fei looked at Xiao Yu with a pleading expression. "Sir, the Second Miss and I are as close as sisters, but given my station, I have no way to ransom her. I have no other choice but to beg you for this favor."
Xiao Yu toyed with the telescope in his hands. "If I were to say no, would you be taking this back?"
Gu Fei’s lips twitched. "Of course not. After all, you did me a huge favor yesterday, Sir. Please, keep this to play with." After speaking, she watched him with wide, hopeful eyes.
Her pitiful, doe-eyed gaze made Xiao Yu’s heart flutter. He huffed, then ordered Stone, "Go and tell them I wish to ransom the Second Miss of the Pingyang Marquis Mansion."
"Bring her here to me."
Stone agreed and left.
Gu Fei’s face lit up. She looked at Xiao Yu and curtsied. "Thank you for your immense kindness, Sir."
Xiao Yu huffed again. "There’s no need to thank me, and certainly don’t call it ’immense kindness.’ I accepted your gift, so naturally, I should give you something in return."
Gu Fei smiled. "You are a man of principle, Sir."
"Whether you acknowledge it or not, Sir, to me this is a great favor. If I have the opportunity in the future, I will be sure to repay your kindness."
In the back courtyard of the Imperial Music Bureau, the Second Miss was currently in her room, shedding tears. A young maid urged her to eat something, but she couldn’t stomach a bite.
The steward had just come by, telling her to prepare to start receiving clients the next day.
These young ladies from prestigious families were all well-versed in zither, Go, calligraphy, and painting. They needed no further training and could be put to work immediately.
The Second Miss was just contemplating taking off her sash and hanging herself from the rafters when the steward’s voice suddenly rang out from outside. "Second Miss, come out! Someone is here to ransom you."
’Ransom me?’
’Has Jadeite come?’
’She said she would come for me.’
The Second Miss flung open the door in excitement, only to see a young man in a servant’s attire standing beside the steward.
The Second Miss was deeply disappointed.
Stone glanced at her. "Our young master wants to ransom you. Pack your things and come with me."
The Second Miss gave a bitter smile. ’What was there to pack?’ The clothes she was wearing had been given to her after she arrived at the Imperial Music Bureau. Other than that, the only thing that belonged to her was the half-sash around her waist.
She lowered her head. "There’s nothing to pack. Let’s go."
’She was resigned to her fate. Being bought and having to serve only one man was still better than receiving countless clients here at the Imperial Music Bureau.’
Just as the group was about to leave, the door to the next room opened. The Marchioness stood in the doorway, staring coldly at the Second Miss. "And where do you think you’re going?"
The Second Miss’s fear of her stepmother was bone-deep. She hurriedly lowered her head and replied respectfully, "Someone is here to ransom me."
The Marchioness’s eyes instantly flared with jealous hatred. She glared at the Second Miss. "Ransom?"
"Who would possibly ransom you? Is it some man you seduced while you were still at home?"
The Second Miss shook her head frantically, so frightened that tears sprang to her eyes. "Mother, I never left my quarters in the mansion. I don’t know any men at all."
The Marchioness sneered. "If it’s not a man you seduced in the past, why on earth would he come to ransom you?"
"You haven’t even started receiving clients, so you couldn’t have possibly seduced someone here!"
"I never thought someone who looks so meek could be so cunning."
"I’m not... I didn’t..." The Second Miss shook her head, sobbing.
The steward beside them chided the Marchioness. "That’s enough. What’s the point of saying all that to her? Just blame your own bad luck!"
Stone also spoke up, his face cold. "What are you dawdling for? Let’s go. My young master is waiting."
Tears streaming down her face, the Second Miss followed behind Stone. The Marchioness stood in the doorway, watching them until they disappeared from sight, her fingernails digging deep into the wooden frame.
