Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Do Me a Favor
Xiao Yu’s interest was piqued. "Alright, let’s hear it."
Gu Fei looked around. "Sir, this isn’t the right place to talk. Why don’t we—"
Xiao Yu waved his hand. "Then let’s talk inside."
With that, he strode into the Imperial Music Bureau.
Gu Fei was ecstatic. She had been searching high and low for a way in, and now she’d stumbled upon it without even trying.
Gu Fei quickly helped her father up and followed Xiao Yu inside.
The servant at the entrance didn’t even dare to raise his head, let alone try to stop them.
Inside the gate was a large courtyard.
After passing through a few gates, they entered a small courtyard.
Every corner of the small courtyard was exquisitely arranged; even the flowers and plants were trimmed with meticulous care.
They entered a room and sat down.
Stone looked at Gu Fei’s back. "Miss Jiefei, I’m afraid the wound on your back has split open again. Your back is covered in blood. Let me get a medical officer to take a look."
Gu Fei waved it off. "I don’t need it. My father’s the one who’s injured. Have the doctor look at him." ’It’s just a little blood; it won’t kill me.’
Stone went out to get someone.
Suddenly, Gu Fei reached under her skirt and pulled something out.
Xiao Yu stared, his eyes wide. ’She hid something that big under her skirt? How did I not notice it when she was kicking those men just now?’
Gu Fei placed the telescope on the table and pushed it toward Xiao Yu. "This is called a telescope. I came upon it by chance, and I feel that only a man as brilliant, powerful, and distinguished as you, sir, is worthy of possessing it."
Xiao Yu picked it up, intrigued. "What does this do?"
Gu Fei pointed to the eyepiece. "Look through here, sir."
Xiao Yu raised the telescope to his eye. After a brief look, his eyes suddenly lit up. He pressed the eyepiece flush against his eye and let out a gasp of surprise. "Your eyes are huge!"
"Ahem." Gu Fei quickly leaned away. "Sir, perhaps you could look at something else." ’I’m sure I washed my face thoroughly this morning,’ she worried. ’I don’t have any sleep in my eyes, do I?’
Xiao Yu abruptly stood up, walked over to the window, and peered into the distance.
The distant flowers and grass were suddenly brought into sharp focus, magnified and so clear they seemed to be within arm’s reach.
He lowered the telescope and raised it again, testing it several times.
He suddenly turned to Gu Fei, his expression serious. "Where did you get this?"
’A children’s telescope I swiped from a supermarket.’
’The magnification is pretty high, though.’
Naturally, Gu Fei wasn’t about to tell the truth. She smiled and said, "An old beggar gave it to me. He was grateful that I’d given him a bowl of rice."
Xiao Yu’s eyes flashed. ’She’s not telling the truth.’
’The material is strange—not gold, not jade, and not wood. And that’s to say nothing of its miraculous function. If scouts were to use this in wartime, couldn’t they gather far more accurate intelligence on the enemy?’
Xiao Yu didn’t press the issue. Instead, he said, "This is no ordinary object. Tell me, what do you want?"
’Smart man!’
Gu Fei appreciated dealing with people like that.
"I’d like to ask for your help, sir, in ransoming someone from the Imperial Music Bureau."
Xiao Yu looked at Gu Fei and asked casually, "And who is it you want to ransom?"
"The Second Miss of the Pingyang Marquis Mansion. She was sent to the Imperial Music Bureau just yesterday."
Just as Xiao Yu was considering her request, Stone returned with a medical officer.
The medical officer entered and quickly tended to Gu Zhang’s wound. Gu Zhang then pleaded with the officer to look at Gu Fei, but she adamantly refused. She didn’t want to waste time. The injury was nothing to make a fuss about; it wasn’t some complex ailment, just a flesh wound. A doctor’s examination would only lead to a dose of golden sore medicine, and it couldn’t even be applied yet. All the wound needed was time to heal, so having it looked at now was pointless.
The medical officer glanced at the blood soaking Gu Fei’s back and then at her completely unbothered expression. He couldn’t help but mutter, "In all my years, I’ve never seen a young woman like her."
Xiao Yu silently agreed. ’She’s just a maid from the Marquis Mansion, yet she’s unbelievably bold. She knows martial arts and is completely nonchalant about her injury. Very strange, indeed.’
The medical officer left a jar of salve for Gu Fei, shook his head, and departed.
