Chapter 64: THAT’S INSANE. YOU SAVED HIS LIFE
Chapter 65
Lumi
"Ahhhww... fuck..."
The sound broke from him low and rough, right against the curve of my neck, and I felt it more than heard it, vibrating straight through my skin.
"You’re beautiful," he murmured, his lips trailing along my jaw, slow and deliberate, like he had all the time in the world and intended to spend every second of it right there. "God, Lumi, you have no idea how beautiful you are."
I couldn’t answer him properly. All I could manage was a shaky breath and my fingers tightening in his hair, pulling him closer, chasing the warmth of his mouth as it moved lower, along the side of my throat.
He pressed a kiss just beneath my ear, then another lower, his stubble scraping gently against my skin in a way that made my whole body arch up toward him.
This was more intense than the dream I had. This was everything and I loved every kisses and touches.
"Beautiful," he said again, quieter this time, almost like he was saying it to himself as much as to me.
His mouth found the curve of my shoulder next, pushing the strap of my top aside without any urgency at all, taking his time like he wanted to memorise every inch of skin he uncovered. I felt his hand slide slowly up my side, warm and sure, and my breath caught somewhere high in my chest.
"Ren," I breathed, not even sure what I meant by saying his name, whether it was a plea for him to stop or to keep going.
He lifted his head just enough to look at me, his dark eyes heavy, searching my face for permission.

Whatever he saw there made something shift in his expression, and he dropped his mouth back down, kissing a slow, burning line across my collarbone.
"You’re beautiful," he said a third time, murmuring it against my skin like it was the only word he had left in him.
My hands slid from his hair down over his shoulders, feeling the shift and pull of muscle beneath his shirt, and I tugged gently, needing him closer, needing more of whatever this slow-building fire between us actually was.
His lips moved lower still, and my entire body felt like it had been lit from the inside, every nerve alert and aching, every thought I might have had about consequences or timing or the world outside this room completely burned away.
Ring. Ring.
His phone rang.
It buzzed hard against the coffee table, loud and jarring in the quiet room, cutting straight through the moment like a blade. Ren stilled instantly, his mouth pausing against my collarbone, his whole body going tense.
He lifted his head, glancing toward the phone with a slight frown, clearly debating whether to ignore it. It rang out. Then, almost immediately, it started again.
"You should take it," I said softly, even though every part of me wanted to tell him to throw the thing across the room instead.
He sighed, pressing one last, lingering kiss to my throat before pulling back and reaching for the phone. He glanced at the screen, and something in his face shifted the second he saw the name.
He answered it immediately.
"Neve?" I sat up slowly, pulling my top back into place, watching him.
The second she spoke, his whole body went rigid, every trace of softness from a moment ago vanishing like it had never existed.
His jaw locked. His eyes went dark and sharp, fixed on some point on the wall like he wasn’t seeing it at all.
My stomach dropped instantly. Something was wrong. I could feel it in the air, thick and sudden, pressing down on the room.
"Say that again," he said, his voice low and dangerously even.
I sat forward, my heart already starting to race.
"Ren? What is it?" He held up a hand slightly, not looking at me, still listening, his knuckles whitening around the phone.
"How long ago?" A pause. "Is anyone with him right now?" Another pause, longer this time, his eyes closing briefly like he was trying to hold something back.
"I’m coming. Don’t let anyone else near that room." He ended the call.
The silence that followed felt enormous, heavy enough to crush the air right out of my lungs.
"Ren." My voice came out shaking. "Who was that?"

"Neve," he said, his voice tight, controlled in that terrifying way he got right before something exploded.
I frowned, confusion mixing with the dread already pooling in my stomach. "Is everything okay?"
He didn’t answer right away. He just looked at me, and whatever was written across his face told me everything before he even opened his mouth.
My blood went cold.
"What happened to Theo?" My voice cracked straight down the middle of his name.
Ren exhaled slowly, dragging a hand down his face.
"Callum showed up at the hospital. With the local pack head." The words didn’t fully register at first.
"What? Why? He has no legal right to..."
"He’s not going through legal channels, Lumi," he cut in, his voice hard.
"He’s using pack law. He brought documentation claiming Theo’s condition falls under a matter of pack jurisdiction, something about protecting a bloodline heir from what he’s calling unsanctioned outside interference." His jaw ticked.
"He’s trying to take Theo out of that hospital right now, using pack authority instead of the courts."
"He doesn’t have the right to do that," I said, my voice rising, panic clawing its way up my throat. "That’s not even his call to make, he signed the divorce papers, he..."
"I know," Ren said, cutting through my rising heartbeat, his voice firm but not unkind.
"But this isn’t London civil law anymore, Lumi. This is pack territory. Callum’s pack. The local council answers to their own hierarchy first, and right now, technically, we’re guests standing on his land."
"So what does that mean?" My hands were shaking now, my whole body vibrating with a fear I hadn’t felt since the moment I first heard Theo was sick.
"Ren, I can’t lose him. I just got him back. I can’t..."
"You’re not going to lose him," he replied, standing up fast, already reaching for his jacket, his movements sharp and controlled despite the fury simmering just beneath his skin.
"Listen to me. We need that court order. The custody papers Neve spoke about, the ones that’ll give you full legal authority. That paper overrides pack jurisdiction when it comes to a human court ruling on a matter of guardianship.
Even Callum’s pack head won’t want to be caught defying an active civil court order, not when it could expose their secrets to the human world. They don’t want that kind of attention."
I grabbed my own jacket, my hands trembling so badly I could barely get my arm through the sleeve. "Then let’s go. Right now."
"Lumi." He caught my wrist gently, forcing me to look at him for one steady second amid the chaos. "I need you to trust me the way you did on that cliff. I’m going to fix this. I promise you, I won’t let them have him."
I stared up at him, my chest heaving, tears already threatening at the edges of my vision, but I nodded, because I didn’t have any other choice.
Because his voice held that same unshakeable certainty it always did, the same certainty that had carried us through hospital hallways and courtrooms and a lifetime of impossible odds already.

"Please," I whispered.
"I will," he said, already pulling the door open, his phone pressed back to his ear, barking out something sharp and commanding to whoever picked up on the other end.
I ran after him into the hallway, my heart hammering so hard it hurt, the memory of his mouth against my skin only minutes ago feeling like it belonged to an entirely different life.
All that mattered now was getting to that hospital, getting to my son, before Callum’s twisted sense of power cost me the one thing I couldn’t survive losing again.
The car ride to the hospital was the longest fifteen minutes of my life.
Ren drove like the streets belonged to him, weaving through the thinning evening traffic with a controlled aggression that would have terrified me any other night. But now, I only wished he could go faster.
"Talk to me," I said, gripping the edge of my seat so hard my knuckles had gone white. "What exactly did Neve say? Word for word."
"She said Callum walked in with three men in dark suits and one particular man looked important by the way the others deferred to him." Ren’s eyes stayed locked on the road, his jaw tight.
"That would be the pack head. She said they had papers, and they told the doctor that Theo needed to be moved for his own protection."
"Protection from what?" My voice cracked on the word.
"From us," Ren said flatly. "From what happened a few nights ago. Callum’s spinning the Alpha stabilisation I did for Theo as proof that outside forces are interfering with a bloodline matter that isn’t ours to touch."
My stomach turned violently. "That’s insane. You saved his life."
