Chapter 480: Revelation on the true nature of Aeshma

In a room lit by a few mana stones, Aeshma stood before a series of transparent capsules where unfinished humanoid forms floated, homunculi with still blurry features. In her slender hands, she manipulated a pearly flame, a fire that changed color with each pulse, shifting from opal to dark violet before turning to emerald green. It was a pure essence, an energy frequency that seemed to possess its own will. With a precise gesture, she injected a spark of this flame into the circulatory system of one of the gestating bodies, causing a nervous twitch in the artificial flesh.

The sharp sound of a massive door pivoting on its metal hinges broke the silence of the room. Lucifer entered the space, his boots clicking on the floor. His eyes immediately settled on Aeshma’s work. He stopped a few steps away from her, his hands in the pockets of his black coat.

"Why are you doing all this, Aeshma?" asked Lucifer, his voice a calm whisper but laden with a suspicion he no longer sought to hide. "Why these experiments? We have opened the Gates of the Abyss, we have colonized a continent... why waste your time with these simulacra of life?"

Aeshma froze. She did not turn around immediately, observing the young man’s reflection on the glass wall of a capsule. A slight sigh escaped her carmine lips before she stored the pearly flame in a crystal vial sealed by runes. She finally turned toward him, her black silk dress highlighting the curve of her hips as she leaned against an experimentation table.

"I think you should know the truth, Lucifer..." began Aeshma, her gaze settling on him. "About my true nature... I am neither an angel, nor a demon."

Lucifer frowned, but he did not interrupt her. He let her words penetrate his mind.

"In this world, angels and demons imagine themselves to be the masters of creation," she continued with a smile tinged with bitterness. "However, they are no different from mortals. They all obey, consciously or not, a single group of beings whose power surpasses understanding: the Constellations."

She made a gesture toward the ceiling, as if to point to the void beyond the purple sky. "They are divided into two camps to maintain an illusion of conflict: on one side the 12 Constellations that lead the celestial armies, and on the other the 12 Seats that command the Princes of Hell. But in reality... they are one and the same group."

"The same group?" repeated Lucifer with a perplexed look.

"Precisely," confirmed Aeshma as she approached him, her steps silent on the stone. "They are entities for whom boredom is the only daily routine. To remedy this, they have transformed this world into a vast chessboard. They amuse themselves by watching the inferior races kill each other, unleashing wars simply for the pleasure of seeing the flames devour the cities. They do not seek the victory of one side, they only seek the spectacle."

She stopped right in front of him. "And I... I am a creation of the 13th Constellation. A sleeping entity, betrayed and banished by its own kind eons ago. I was created with the sole purpose of helping it awaken. That is the reason for my experiments, and for everything I have undertaken so far."

Lucifer remained motionless, his mind processing the information at lightning speed. The revelation about the Constellations finally explained the cyclical absurdity of these endless wars, but the rest of her words gave rise to a dull pain in his chest.

"My initial mission was to find a human capable of fighting the angels and demons at my side... a being whose will and potential could serve as a catalyst," she explained, her eyes plunging into his. "But for the awakening of the 13th Constellation to be possible, several conditions had to be met. The opening of the Gates of the Abyss was one of them. The world of mortals had to be saturated with demonic and arcane mana to weaken the cosmic seals."

Lucifer took a step back, his gaze hardening. "So... all this time... you only used me as a tool? You never approached me to build a life together... Everything was just another plan?"

He clenched his fists. "The mad scientist was right then... he warned me not to trust you since you were not worthy."

There was a heavy silence, disturbed only by the hum of the machines. Lucifer felt betrayed, not by an enemy, but by the only person he had let into his circle of intimacy. The air in the laboratory immediately became palpable.

Aeshma did not retreat in the face of this pressure. It was then that she advanced toward him again, extending a delicate hand to gently caress his face. Her fingers were warm against his pale skin. Without giving him time to react, she rose on tiptoe and kissed him. It was a kiss, laden with a sincerity that no words could have conveyed.

When she pulled away from him, her face displayed an expression she had never shown to anyone. "My mission was indeed to use you as a receptacle for the essence of the 13th Constellation..." she murmured, her voice trembling slightly. "But over time... I developed feelings for you, Lucifer. Real feelings, which were not planned in the code of my creation. Today... I no longer have any intention of following that path. I refuse to sacrifice you for the awakening of my master."

Lucifer remained perplexed, his mind in total confusion between the feeling of betrayal and the deep affection he felt for Aeshma. He wanted to hate her, he wanted to leave and leave her with her flasks, but his feelings for her took over, preventing him from thinking clearly. He felt his anger dull in the face of her vulnerability.

"I accept your explanation..." he finally said, his voice still a little hoarse. "But if you have abandoned this plan... why continue working on these homunculi?"

Aeshma sighed with relief and turned again toward her capsules. "Because I need a new body, Lucifer. My own power, this Constellation essence that flows within me, continues to grow day by day. My current envelope is consuming itself from the inside. To survive, I must mix different types of DNA: human, elf, demon and even traces of celestial blood... in order to create a body capable of containing such an energy load without disintegrating."

She placed a hand on the wall of the most advanced capsule. "It is my only chance to remain by your side in the world that is coming."

Lucifer approached her and placed his hand on her shoulder, squeezing it firmly. He nodded solemnly, his gaze shining with a new resolve.

"I understand..." declared Lucifer in a tone that brooked no argument. "In that case, continue your research. I will do everything in my power to protect you, no matter who stands in our way... whether it be the 12 Constellations or the 12 Seats."

Aeshma smiled and leaned against him, looking at the bodies of the homunculi.
