Chapter 472: Sulyvhan the Conqueror (3)

Sulyvhan struck his sword which slid over the demon’s curved weapon to deflect the force, then struck immediately after. The impact of the blow forced the demon to retreat a few steps.

He delivered a straight thrust toward the demon’s torso. The opponent parried at the last moment, but the shock made his entire arm vibrate. Sulyvhan followed up with an ascending slash that forced the demon to jump backward to avoid the blade.

The demon counterattacked with a powerful horizontal backhand. Sulyvhan simply ducked, the blade passing above his head. He rose immediately and delivered a descending strike that hit the demon’s shoulder. The armor plate cracked and black blood flowed along the ebony arm.

Sulyvhan gave no respite. He multiplied simple and effective attacks. Every movement of his body was precise. He feinted then struck the demon on the left flank who managed to block at the last moment. The demon parried with increasing difficulty. His breathing grew heavy while Sulyvhan increased the pace of his attacks.

Sulyvhan delivered a deep gash to his left flank. Black blood spurted onto the rock. The demon growled in pain and attempted a mana impulse to push Sulyvhan back. The latter simply pivoted on his feet and avoided the purple energy that struck empty air.

Seizing the opening, he advanced with a firm step and drove his sword into the demon’s thigh. The blade pierced the protection and came out the other side. The demon staggered. Sulyvhan withdrew the weapon with a sharp motion and stepped back a meter to observe his opponent.

The three-horned demon was still standing, but his posture had changed. His left arm hung lower and his injured leg barely supported his weight. He raised his curved sword with difficulty and charged while letting out a hoarse cry. Sulyvhan remained calm. He blocked the descending blow with the flat of his blade, then pushed to unbalance the demon.

The opponent stumbled. Sulyvhan immediately followed up with a slash at the ribs. The blade sliced through the armor and opened a new long and deep wound. The demon spun on himself to attempt a rear backhand. Sulyvhan simply stepped back one pace. The blade whistled through the air without touching him.

The fight was becoming one-sided. He delivered precise attacks that always hit their target or forced the demon into a bad position.

The demon attempted one last maneuver. He concentrated demonic mana in his free hand and launched an energy discharge while striking with his sword. Sulyvhan dodged the discharge by turning his hips and parried the curved sword with a fluid movement. He riposted with a straight thrust that hit the demon in the right arm. The demon’s weapon trembled in his hand.

Sulyvhan increased the pressure even more. He now advanced relentlessly, forcing the demon to retreat toward the edge of the promontory. Each parry from the demon became slower. His wounds bled profusely and weakened his movements. Sulyvhan struck the knee, causing his opponent’s leg to buckle. The demon fell to one knee.

Sulyvhan stood before him, then raised his sword and struck several times in succession. The demon blocked with difficulty, his arm shaking under the repeated impacts. A new gash appeared on his chest, then another on his forearm. Black blood now stained a large part of his ebony skin.

No longer seeing the point in continuing this fight, Sulyvhan raised his hand above his head. A white light condensed around his sword, becoming intense. The demon tried to get up, but his injured leg no longer responded properly. He raised his weapon one last time in a desperate gesture.

Sulyvhan then executed the second movement of his Sundering Eclipse technique. A few months ago he had figured out how to improve his technique but this was the first time he was using it on an enemy.

His blade traced a perfect arc at the height of the demon’s chest, then a series of energy blades suspended in the air materialized around. These struck precisely the demon’s joints as he tried to get up. Black blood spurted from the cuts and splashed the stones.

" Kuh ! " spat the second demon, his fangs grinding with exasperation.

The demon remained motionless for a second. Then slid slowly forward face down onto the ground with a dull thud. Black blood spread quickly around the body cut in two.

Sulyvhan straightened up slowly. He wiped his blade with a simple gesture and observed the battlefield below. The generals continued their work with efficiency. The human troops still held the lines and repelled the horde which was visibly diminishing.

He sheathed his sword. He descended from the promontory with a measured step, leaving behind the corpse of the high-ranking demon.

Sulyvhan rejoined his troops without haste. Ashborn and Stavenger maintained discipline at the center. The regular soldiers fought with increased determination since the arrival of the other generals. The monsters were now retreating in large numbers, unable to resist the combined power of the elite humans.

Sulyvhan resumed his place in the middle of the battlefield. His aura still enveloped the area and maintained pressure on the last demons. He raised his hand to give a simple signal. The lines advanced as one, tightening the noose around the remaining forces.

The fighting continued, but the outcome was no longer in doubt. Sulyvhan looked ahead with a calm face. His long silver hair moved slightly in the ash-laden wind. He had dominated his opponent from beginning to end thanks to clear superiority in technique, strength and endurance.

After a few hours the generals finished their respective sectors. No longer having leaders to command them, the hobgoblins and minor demons fled or died on the spot.

At the end of the day, silence gradually returned to the plain. The bodies of the monsters covered the basaltic ground. The humans were already beginning to organize the conquered terrain. Sulyvhan stood upright, his hands on the pommel of his sword planted in the ground. His gaze swept the horizon with no visible fatigue.
