Chapter 467: The human continent (2)

Sulyvhan killed the remaining demons methodically. His blade traced precise arcs in the air. Each strike severed a limb or a head. The black blood of the creatures flowed onto the ground already covered in ruins. The surviving humans, about ten men, women and children, remained hidden behind the debris. They watched the scene with eyes filled with fear and hope.

A medium-sized demon with horns curved backward leaped toward him from a pile of stones. Sulyvhan pivoted and raised his sword. The blade sliced through the monster’s torso in a single motion. The body fell into two distinct parts.

"Stay behind the stone blocks!" Sulyvhan shouted to the survivors. His voice was firm and clear. A woman holding a child in her arms nodded quickly. She pulled the others toward a more solid shelter.

Three demons threw themselves at him at the same time. Their sharp claws shone under the red light of the sky. Sulyvhan used his Art once again. He projected a shockwave with his left hand. The air compressed and struck the first demon square in the chest. The bones cracked loudly. The monster was thrown backward and smashed against a collapsed wall.

The other two arrived on his flanks. Sulyvhan parried the first one’s strike with his sword. The blade blocked the claws with a metallic sound. With his right hand, he drove the tip into the second demon’s belly. The corrosive blood spurted and slightly burned the fabric of his clothing. He withdrew the weapon with a sharp gesture and pivoted to decapitate the last attacker. The head rolled on the ground before the body collapsed.

A demon larger than the others, with skin covered in thick scales, advanced slowly. It held a club made of bones and metal salvaged from the ruins.

It charged directly. Its body became a silver streak. He dodged the first swing of the club which shattered the ground where he had stood a second earlier. Stones flew in all directions. Sulyvhan jumped to the side and struck the monster’s knee. The blade cut deeply into the flesh. The demon howled and fell to one knee.

Without waiting, Sulyvhan leaped onto the creature’s back. He plunged his sword into the nape of its neck. The tip pierced the thick skin and reached the spine. The demon convulsed for a moment then went still. Sulyvhan withdrew his blade and jumped to the ground before the massive body collapsed.

Around him, about ten minor demons were still running between the debris. They were trying to reach the survivors. Sulyvhan moved quickly and killed the demons.

"Thank you..." murmured the child in a trembling voice.

"Don’t stray from the others," Sulyvhan replied simply. He wiped the black blood from his blade by shaking it lightly.

The red sky continued to swirl. A new wave of unhealthy energy descended on the area. Several additional demons appeared near a hill of rubble. There were more of them this time, about fifteen. Their eyes shone with a yellow glow in the gloom.

Sulyvhan breathed deeply. He concentrated his aura. The silver light surrounded his body and his sword. He launched himself toward them. The first demon he met was cut in two at the waist. The second received a powerful kick in the belly before the blade slit its throat. The blood spurted and stained Sulyvhan’s face, but he continued without wiping it.

Sulyvhan chained the movements. His Art, Sundering Eclipse, illuminated the area with a white glow. Each arc of his blade hit its target.

A particularly fast demon slid to the side and tried to claw his back. Sulyvhan sensed the movement. He pivoted in time and blocked with his forearm. The claws dug deep marks into his skin. The pain was sharp, but he ignored the burning. With a backhand, he decapitated the monster. The head flew and landed near the feet of a survivor who recoiled in horror.

He killed the demons one by one. His breathing grew heavier, but his determination remained intact. He thought of the destroyed villages he had crossed while arriving on the continent. He thought of the scattered bones everywhere. These people deserved a chance to survive.

After several intense minutes, the last demon of the wave fell. Sulyvhan planted his sword in the ground to catch his breath. The black blood covered his boots and his clothes. Corrosive drops still smoked on the stone.

A middle-aged man with gray hair and a dirty face approached cautiously. He held an improvised staff as a weapon.

"Who are you?" he asked in a hoarse voice. "We haven’t seen anyone capable of fighting like that..."

"My name is Sulyvhan..."

The woman holding the child stepped forward in turn. Her eyes were filled with tears.

"The demons arrived some time ago and then they began to sow chaos... only a few groups like us try to survive by hiding."

Sulyvhan nodded. He looked at the survivors. They were thin, exhausted and frightened. Several children were crying silently.

"I will escort you to a safer place if possible," he said. "But first, we must check if there are any other demons in the immediate vicinity." he said before turning around. "Stay together and follow me at a distance. Do not expose yourselves."

He advanced toward a hill. The survivors followed him in single file, remaining as silent as possible. The ground cracked under their steps. Bones sometimes broke. The smell of blood and burnt flesh filled the air.

At the top of the hill, Sulyvhan discovered a small makeshift camp set up by the demons. Rudimentary cages contained three humans still alive. Four demons stood guard. One of them, more imposing, seemed to be the leader. It had long straight horns.

Sulyvhan did not waste time. He ran down the slope. His body became blurred. He attacked the first guard from behind. The blade went through its neck. The demon collapsed without a cry. The others reacted immediately.

"Die for your crimes," spoke Sulyvhan as he looked at the remaining demons.
