Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Picked Up Caleb Lowell’s Golden Finger?

When Mrs. Everett learned that no one from the Lancaster family was home, she snuck out from the back of the mountain.

There was no cell service on the mountain, so she planned to go to the front yard to video call Caleb Lowell and see if he was back.

She had originally planned to keep up her act on the mountain, playing the part of a miserable victim to elicit sympathy.

But the eldest young master was too formidable. As soon as he returned, he’d produced evidence out of nowhere and, without another word, accused her of taking kickbacks.

Realizing that not only was the million-dollar compensation off the table, but she would also have to return the illicit funds, she was filled with regret. She never should have been so foolish as to stay that day.

At the time, she’d assumed that since she had practically raised Alvin Lancaster herself, he would surely take pity on her and come visit. But afterward, he’d completely forgotten about her, leaving her on the mountain.

’He has no conscience at all.’

After days of planting and watering vegetables, her fingers had grown coarse. ’How can I go on like this?’

Furthermore, the eldest young master had said that since her salary was for her daughter’s medical treatments, it would be deposited directly into her daughter’s account from now on.

After all, the Lancaster family provided her with room and board, so she had no need for spending money.

The more Mrs. Everett thought about it, the more she was consumed by regret.

"Felicia Everett, get back to the mountain. This isn’t a place for you," a security guard said, walking over to warn her.

Mrs. Everett was startled by the sound of an approaching car, but she immediately recognized the engine and rushed outside.

She saw Caleb Lowell’s car driving into the courtyard and was so happy she almost laughed out loud.

"See that? Young Master Lowell is here to pick me up!"

The security guard stared at her in surprise. ’Could that be true?’

The car was just about to enter when, for some unknown reason, it slowly began to back out again.

The smile on Mrs. Everett’s face froze. Realizing the car was leaving, she frantically chased after it. "Young Master Lowell! I’m over here!"

But the car drove away without a moment’s hesitation.

Julian Lancaster learned what had happened at the guard post right after his plane landed.

"What’s wrong, Big Bro?" Alvin Lancaster asked, rubbing his face to wake himself up.

"It’s nothing." He hung up the phone calmly and looked at his younger brother. He still hadn’t told him anything about Mrs. Everett.

"Jay, Caleb Lowell is back in Stratton. He just went to the house looking for you," Julian Lancaster said.

Alvin Lancaster was taken aback. "What a shame. He must have rushed over to the house to see you as soon as his plane landed, only to find you weren’t there."

Jane Lancaster smiled knowingly. "Yes, what a shame indeed."

’Rushed over to see me? Please. He got back last night, didn’t he? And even played the hero saving a damsel in distress.’

She glanced at her phone. Caleb Lowell had finally replied to her text, but it was too long. She didn’t feel like reading it, so she decided not to reply.

Alvin Lancaster assumed the young couple had already been in touch, but Julian Lancaster’s expression grew serious.

’His sister was only complaining in her thoughts, but she was playing along out loud. That means Caleb Lowell most likely kept his return last night a secret from everyone.’

’What he didn’t understand was how the man who once put his sister above all else could have such a sudden change of heart.’

「The next day」

Caleb Lowell spent the entire day checking his phone. Jane Lancaster still hadn’t replied to his message from last night. He’d only found out they’d arrived safely at their hotel from Alvin Lancaster.

’She was probably too tired to reply,’ he thought. ’It’s fine. She’ll probably text back in the morning.’

His wait lasted until the following afternoon.

"Zion." Chloe Dave and Vincent Holt had heard Caleb Lowell was back and made a special trip to see him that afternoon.

"You got back yesterday? Why didn’t you say something sooner? I’ve arranged a welcome-home party at Vesperia for tonight. The guys and I can all celebrate properly."

Caleb Lowell nodded. "Alright. You arrange it. I’m in."

Besides, he hadn’t actually returned yesterday. It was already his third day back, so he really should celebrate with his friends.

"I’ll go let everyone know to be there," Chloe Dave said, stepping aside to make a phone call. A few moments later, he had everyone lined up.

Vincent Holt suddenly smiled. "Why don’t we invite your girl, too? I’d like to apologize to her, right here in front of you, cousin."

Caleb Lowell gave him a surprised look. "It’s rare for you to be so thoughtful. But Jay isn’t in Stratton today."

The phone on the table suddenly buzzed twice, and Caleb Lowell snatched it up.

Vincent Holt fell silent.

’Why is he so anxious? He’s lost his usual composure.’

Caleb saw the message was from Alvin Lancaster and felt a pang of disappointment. But when he opened it and read that they were flying back tonight, his eyes lit up again.

He pressed a button on his desk phone, and an assistant quickly knocked and entered.

"Arrange for a car at seven. I need to go to the airport to pick someone up."

Chloe Dave came over, surprised. "Zion, what about the welcome-home party tonight? I thought we agreed."

Caleb Lowell said, "Cancel it. I can’t make it."

Chloe Dave was still trying to process it as he walked out of the office. "Who in the world is at the airport?"

"Who else could it be? Jane Lancaster, obviously," Vincent Holt sneered, having noticed the message was from Alvin Lancaster.

’That woman is like a ghost you can’t shake. Just like that, she ruined our get-together.’

’This isn’t over. Sooner or later, I’ll make her pay.’

「Airport Terminal」

The VIP lounge was silent, with most occupants busy working on their laptops.

Jane Lancaster had eaten too much for dinner. Bored, she took Mama Knight for a stroll, and they eventually wandered out of the lounge.

In a corner, a young man was squatting while on the phone.

"What? The client saw the proposal and decided not to invest? No, how can they do that? What am I supposed to do about my plane ticket?"

"A refund? I can’t get a refund! I used my miles to get this ticket; it’s non-refundable!"

The young man ran a hand through his hair in frustration.

Jane Lancaster glanced at his thick head of hair. ’Youth is wasted on the young,’ she thought wryly, ’and so is all that hair.’

Just as she was about to walk away, the young man suddenly looked up, revealing a scruffy, unshaven face.

"Oh my!" Mama Knight jumped, startled.

The young man shifted his position, turning his back to them in embarrassment.

Back in the VIP lounge, Mama Knight noticed that the complimentary snacks, drinks, and fruit were untouched. She pocketed a few items and snuck back out.

A few minutes later, Mama Knight returned and said to Jane Lancaster with a sigh, "That poor young Mr. Thorne. He’s working on a film project, but his funding was pulled. He was looking for new investors, and they asked him to fly over for a meeting. He’s about to board his flight, and they just called to say it’s off."

Jane Lancaster asked, "Thorne?"

Mama Knight said, "Oh, yes, his last name is Thorne. It’s an unusual name, isn’t it?"

Jane Lancaster stared at Mama Knight with a strange expression. ’Did Mama Knight really just stumble upon Caleb Lowell’s "golden ticket" just like that?’

Mama Knight was a little confused. "Miss Jane, what is it?"

"That Mr. Thorne, where is he? Tell him not to give up his ticket! I’ll have someone talk to him about a partnership right now!"

Mama Knight, thoroughly confused, followed Jane Lancaster out. "He said that even though he can’t get a refund, he’s not going to take the flight. He doesn’t see the point in wasting time on a long trip for nothing."

Jared Thorne had done the math. He’d only redeemed a one-way ticket and hadn’t bought the return flight yet. Leaving the airport now was the best way to cut his losses.

He was just frustrated. He’d rushed all the way here from the film set only to be stood up, and he couldn’t help venting a little to the older woman.

But what was going on? Why was the older woman bringing that young lady back with her?

"What did you say? You want to invest in my movie?" Jared Thorne shot to his feet. If she was saying that, he was going to take her seriously!

"Not me," Mama Knight said. "She’s the one who wants to invest in your movie."
