Chapter 68: Chapter 68: You Really Are a Sucker

Jane Lancaster had seen enough of the drama and stepped out. "Pauline."

Manager Raymond jumped. ’Was she eavesdropping on me?’ But on second thought, he decided there was nothing wrong with what he’d said.

’Women are all brainless,’ he thought. ’They always lead with their emotions and don’t care about right or wrong.’

’Since she’s Pauline Shaw’s good friend, she probably doesn’t get along with Willow Summers either.’

"By the way, I wonder where a lady like Miss Lancaster works? I’d guess one of the big corporations. You have such a professional air about you," Manager Raymond said, laying on the flattery.

The woman’s features were so beautiful, yet she wore no makeup and wasn’t dolled up. She was confident and carried herself with a natural grace.

’She’s friends with Pauline Shaw and dares to provoke Jim Jenson. Her family background must be impressive. A little extra flattery can’t hurt.’

"Then you’ve guessed wrong. I don’t have a job," Jane Lancaster stated plainly.

Manager Raymond was taken aback. His attempt at flattery had completely missed the mark. He quickly tried to recover. "Then you must still be in college. Students at prestigious universities are in no rush to find a job. You could go to grad school..."

Jane Lancaster’s expression darkened. "I’m not in college, either. I don’t even have a high school diploma, so how could I go to college?"

His flattery having failed twice in a row, Manager Raymond was completely baffled. ’What the hell is her deal?’

’How could a rich family’s kid not even have a high school diploma? Can’t afford college?’

’Did I misjudge her? Is she not some wealthy heiress after all?’

"She didn’t go to school because of an accident. Her family is about to arrange for her to attend university," Pauline Shaw quickly explained.

She knew Jane Lancaster was doing it on purpose, trying to make Manager Raymond uncomfortable.

Manager Raymond laughed. "Haha, your family must really love you. In any case, you definitely have to go to college. I’ve told my own daughter that she must go to college."

Jane Lancaster shot Pauline Shaw a meaningful look.

’I’m not going to actually tear into Manager Raymond. A few jabs are enough. If I push it, I might blow my cover. What if Pauline sees him for who he really is?’

"Manager Raymond, you’re so nice! I also think it’s essential for girls to be well-read!" Jane Lancaster said with a look of pleasant surprise. "The more you read, the wiser you become, the more options you have, and the better you can stay away from poor and ugly men. Don’t you agree, Manager Raymond?"

Manager Raymond: "...You’re absolutely right."

He couldn’t even force a smile. ’Damn it, who is she calling poor and ugly?’

’She’s as skinny as a beanpole. You can tell she wouldn’t be good for childbearing. She’d be lucky if any poor man even gave her the time of day.’

"I actually think relationships shouldn’t be about external factors. Sincerity is what’s most important. If a couple is just full of scheming, they’ll never be happy, no matter how much money they have," Pauline Shaw said, giving Jane Lancaster a deep look.

’My cousin is completely sincere with you, but are you?’

"Right, right, right! Isn’t there a popular saying going around? ’Those who spurn a sincere heart must swallow ten thousand needles’," Manager Raymond added with a teasing smile.

He’d finally found his footing again after she’d nearly thrown him completely off his game.

’That sincerity is so cheap. So what if I spurn it?’

Pauline Shaw was speechless with anger and didn’t want to speak to her.

As the three of them walked back, they happened to see Willow Summers in the hallway, arguing with a server.

"I’m sorry, ma’am, but we don’t offer discounts for private rooms."

Willow Summers wouldn’t give an inch. "But the rules on the discount coupon don’t say it can’t be used for private rooms. On what grounds are you refusing to let me use it?"

"Those are the boss’s rules. There’s nothing I can do."

"If there’s nothing you can do, then do as I say and get your boss over here right now! I want this discount!" Willow Summers snapped.

She looked up and saw Jane Lancaster’s group standing nearby. She suddenly pressed her lips together and fell silent.

Pauline Shaw had no intention of getting involved and turned to leave.

Jane Lancaster suddenly spoke up. "Willow, are you paying the bill?"

Manager Raymond quickly chimed in. "Oh, Miss Summers, you shouldn’t have! We were supposed to pay, but Young Master Jenson is so generous, we wouldn’t want to embarrass him. Thank you, Miss Summers, for paying the bill on Young Master Jenson’s behalf."

Jane Lancaster almost laughed.

’They all call Willow Summers a gold digger, but when the bill comes, every single one of them runs for the hills.’

’Manager Raymond, you’re as sharp as they come. You really expect me to believe you don’t know you can’t let the client pay under any circumstances?’

Pauline Shaw pursed her lips. She didn’t know what had gotten into her mother lately. She’d suddenly declared that Pauline was independent enough and had cut her monthly allowance.

Otherwise, she would have paid the bill herself just to shut down Jane Lancaster’s passive-aggressive comments.

Manager Raymond moved closer to Pauline Shaw and whispered, "This Miss Summers really is uncouth. Using Young Master Jenson’s money to pay the bill and still trying to pocket some extra cash on the side."

Pauline Shaw thought so too. Willow Summers was only with a rich man for his money, right? Why would she ever spend her own money on him?

Seeing that Pauline agreed, Manager Raymond whispered again, "And really, why give the server such a hard time? The guy’s just an employee."

"She’s used to sucking up to her superiors and stepping on those below her," Pauline Shaw commented coolly.

She turned her head and jumped, startled to see Jane Lancaster standing extremely close to her.

’So the high-and-mighty Pauline Shaw also bad-mouths people behind their backs. Feeling a little guilty now, are we?’

’Just wait, the real humiliation is coming. That server is just a snob who’s trying to take advantage of someone he thinks is a dumb rich person with more money than sense.’

A moment later, a man who looked like the floor manager hurried over. "My apologies, my apologies! Ma’am, the discount coupon is not restricted to private rooms. You can definitely use it."

Pauline Shaw: "..."

When Willow Summers saw Pauline Shaw looking over, she glared at her. "What are you looking at? Have you never even used a discount coupon before?"

Pauline Shaw suppressed her anger. "You certainly know how to use one. But will you be reporting the actual expense for reimbursement?"

Willow Summers gave her a baffled look. "Are you a psycho?!"

’Report for reimbursement? Who would I even get reimbursement from?’

Jane Lancaster took the card Willow was about to use. "Willow, why are you using your own card?"

Only then did Willow Summers understand what Pauline Shaw’s words had meant.

"That’s right, I’m the big sucker here! Treating a bunch of psychos to dinner! Just my rotten luck, I guess!" After speaking, she glanced at Jane Lancaster. "You can consider yourself an exception."

Pauline Shaw’s face turned livid with rage.

’You’re so eager to pay the bill, isn’t it just to suck up to Jim Jenson? Playing the long game to land a big fish!’

But Jane Lancaster had a different interpretation.

’The fact that Willow Summers is offering to pay means she wants to cut ties with Jim Jenson as quickly as possible. She probably didn’t even want to come to this dinner in the first place.’

Pauline Shaw was in disbelief. Willow Summers was spending a fortune—how could it just be to cut ties with Jim Jenson? It was obviously a ploy to get even more from him!

’Why is she always taking Willow Summers’ side?!’

Jane Lancaster didn’t know what Pauline Shaw was thinking. She returned the card to Willow Summers.

"You really are a sucker. A meal over 50,000 is no small amount. In any case, it shouldn’t be you paying for it, right?"

Then she turned to the floor manager holding the card machine. "Come with me to run the card."

Once they reached the private room and she pushed the door open, she finally spoke. "Young Master Jenson is treating our room today. The richest-looking person in there is him. He hates getting discounts, so don’t you dare embarrass him."
