Chapter 44: Chapter 44: The Emperor Isn’t Worried, but the Eunuch Is

Pauline Shaw was speechless with anger, finding her attitude far too nonchalant.

When the two of them returned to the private room, Julian Lancaster was just sending someone to look for them.

The manager had also sent over a magnificent fruit platter as a gesture to appease the two ladies.

Julian Lancaster learned what had happened from the manager. His expression darkened, and after a moment of contemplation, he turned to instruct Calvin Cole, "The Jenson family’s young master returning to the country is a big deal. Send that set of Zisha clay teaware from my study over as a congratulatory gift."

Years ago, when the Jenson Family came to apologize, their matriarch had delivered a top-of-the-line Zisha clay tea set.

Julian Lancaster didn’t know the full story, only that his father had made a call to Old Master Jenson from the study and then kept the tea set.

The very next day, Jim Jenson was sent abroad.

His father had said at the time that as long as Jay didn’t give the nod, Jim Jenson couldn’t even think about coming back.

By sending the tea set back now, he was warning them not to forget how Jim Jenson had been sent away in the first place.

"Jay, come with me. Let’s go thank President Lewis for his help." Seeing his sister had returned, Julian Lancaster beckoned her over gently.

As they walked, he explained to Jane Lancaster that the old gentleman in the hallway who had backed her up was President Lewis.

The Lewis Family came from wealth. They were a true, old-money family with deep heritage and a dignified air. Their descendants were all high-achievers, active in various fields, and countless people were desperate to curry favor with them.

The old man had a forthright personality. He had probably stood silently in the hallway backing Jane Lancaster up because he couldn’t stand how arrogant Jim Jenson was.

’Of course I know he’s President Lewis. Why else would I have confronted Jim Jenson so directly?’

’President Lewis has lived a long life. He isn’t the type to meddle in other people’s business for the thrill of it. He got involved not because Jim Jenson was arrogant, but because I was composed enough to handle the situation.’

’Decades ago, when President Lewis got married, he was kidnapped by criminals. His father, brainwashed by his mistress, wanted to install his illegitimate son as the heir. His mother was too weak and powerless to do anything but cry. The Lewis Family almost fell apart.’

’It was the recently-wed Mrs. Lewis who split an Eight Immortals table with a single slash of a blade, intimidating the crowd of schemers.’

’It was also Mrs. Lewis who relentlessly pursued the mistress’s wrongdoings, which led to her uncovering the traitor within the family and following the clues to rescue President Lewis.’

’President Lewis nearly lost his life because of his mother’s weakness and compromise, and then got it back because of his wife’s strength and dominance. It goes without saying what kind of woman he admires.’

Julian Lancaster paused, then couldn’t help but chuckle. ’Right. How could a sister as smart as his not recognize President Lewis?’

But that was all ancient history. The Lewis Family never spoke of it, so outsiders had no way of knowing. ’How did his sister find out?’

As they approached, President Lewis and his party were preparing to leave.

Hearing Julian Lancaster’s purpose, the old man smiled and said, "It was nothing more than a small effort. The young lady has a fine character. She knows how to stand up for what’s right, and that’s a very good thing."

After a pause, the old man added, "You’re the young lady from the hostage situation three years ago, the one who saved her companion, aren’t you? Truly remarkable, saving so many people!"

Jane Lancaster was a little surprised. "You know me?"

"Yes, someone told me about your heroic deeds. At the time, I was angry that fate was so blind. Thankfully, heaven’s eyes finally opened, and you woke up."

The old man seemed to genuinely like Jane Lancaster. He immediately pulled a jewelry box from his pocket. "I hope your future will be smooth and that you’ll live a long and healthy life."

The jewelry box was exquisite. Inside was a Jade Peaceful Button with beautiful coloring.

The gift was a bit too valuable. Jane Lancaster said, "President Lewis, I can’t accept this."

"Just take it. Otherwise, I’ll have no one to give it to." President Lewis paused. "My great-granddaughter is only three years old. She doesn’t like jade, only Peppa Pig."

This was a real headache for the old man. He couldn’t very well have the jade carved into Peppa Pig, could he?

Jane Lancaster said, "You could give her a red envelope. Then the little darling can buy whatever she wants."

President Lewis blinked. "Now that’s a good idea. I’ll give it a try when I get back."

Jane Lancaster looked at the jade in her hand, then glanced up hesitantly at Julian Lancaster.

"Jay, it’s a token of President Lewis’s goodwill. If you like it, just accept it," Julian Lancaster said, gently stroking the top of her head.

Jane Lancaster immediately turned her head and said, "Thank you, Grandpa!"

The word slipped out so naturally that President Lewis couldn’t help but laugh.

Julian Lancaster saw that it was getting late and took the initiative to see President Lewis and his party out.

Pauline Shaw walked at the very back, her head bowed in thought.

"Hey, beautiful," a middle-aged man sidled up to her, his tone overly friendly. "What’s your relationship with President Lewis? Could you help make an introduction?"

Pauline Shaw froze for a second, her face darkening. "No relationship!"

The middle-aged man said, "Come on. If you don’t want to make an introduction, just say so. ’No relationship’? Who are you trying to kid?"

Pauline Shaw retorted, "There really is no relationship!"

She quickened her pace.

The middle-aged man didn’t follow. "Your friend is pretty capable, being able to make President Lewis that happy."

Pauline Shaw was in a terrible mood. ’Make happy? Jane Lancaster schemed and plotted to curry favor. What does that have to do with me?’

It had always been like this. During the New Year, there were always some parties in their circle to attend.

Pauline Shaw disliked the sycophantic atmosphere at parties and used her student status as an excuse to stay far away.

But Jane Lancaster believed that maintaining relationships required networking, so she actively attended.

She was beautiful, had graceful manners, and knew what to say, so it was easy for her to win the affection of the elders.

’That President Lewis probably thinks it was just a chance encounter. How could he know that she had already investigated his family’s situation, meticulously planned everything, and seized the opportunity to latch onto him?’

’If he found out, he would probably be furious. After all, a man in his high position with such a direct temperament would never tolerate being used.’

’Jane Lancaster is too bold. Scheming against people like this... if it backfires, she won’t be building a connection, she’ll be making an enemy.’

"Let’s head back, too." After seeing off President Lewis and his group, a hint of fatigue showed in Julian Lancaster’s eyes.

Calvin Cole had already notified the driver to bring the car around.

Just as Jane Lancaster was about to get in the car, her gaze paused and drifted to the person standing on the steps.

Pauline Shaw followed her line of sight. "Willow Summers is still here."

Willow Summers was wearing a thin, beautiful, ethereal dress. The night breeze was cool, and she seemed a bit cold, hugging her shoulders.

Just then, Jim Jenson walked over, took off his jacket, and draped it over her shoulders. Then, he naturally put his arm around her waist and guided her toward a car.

Willow Summers’s gaze swept over, meeting Jane Lancaster’s for two seconds before she casually looked away.

The two of them got into the car.

Pauline Shaw had sharp eyes and noticed something new on Willow Summers’s wrist when she raised her hand.

She couldn’t help but smirk. "Looks like Willow Summers accepted that bracelet."

’So what was the point of you trying so hard to warn her? How could someone so greedy for wealth and status be willing to let go of a benefit that’s already in her grasp?’

Jane Lancaster withdrew her gaze and hummed noncommittally, as if she didn’t care at all.

In reality, she truly wasn’t thinking about Willow Summers.

’Great! I can finally go home and deal with Alvin Lancaster!’ Her inner voice was jubilant, clearly delighted.

Pauline Shaw: "???"

"She said she would throw you under the bus," she couldn’t help but say, stressing her words. ’Are you really not angry?’

Jane Lancaster looked up at her, realized what she was talking about, and said flatly, "So let her."

’She’d be throwing *me* under the bus, not herself. Why is she more worried than the person involved?’

Pauline Shaw: "..."

’I’ll be damned if I say another word to Jane Lancaster!’
