Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Equally Running Over Everyone She Can’t Stand
Pauline Shaw regretted it the moment she linked arms. Maybe when she was an immature teenager, but now as an adult, it was completely inappropriate. It made her look so undignified.
But because Beverly Lynch was staring at her, she could only force herself to keep her arm linked.
Sensing Jane Lancaster’s attempt to pull away, she inexplicably tightened her grip.
Jane Lancaster tried to pull away once but failed, so she gave up.
’Are you two children? How childish. Am I some kind of toy you’re fighting over?’
’What’s Beverly Lynch’s deal? Doesn’t she usually love to put me down whenever she gets the chance? Today she’s actually speaking up for me. Don’t tell me she has a crush on me.’
Pauline Shaw was speechless. A crush on her? How was that possible!
Did she even know why she and Beverly Lynch were always at each other’s throats?
Although the two had never gotten along since childhood, their families were old friends, so they always maintained a certain level of civility.
The person who had caused the complete falling out between her and Beverly Lynch was Jane Lancaster.
But Jane Lancaster’s words did give her an idea, opening up a new line of thought.
Pauline Shaw smiled and said, "Beverly Lynch, you’re sticking up for Jay so much. Don’t tell me you have a big crush on her?"
Beverly Lynch’s expression changed. She said with cold arrogance, "Nonsense! How could I possibly like her!"
’Just as I thought!’
Pauline Shaw continued to fan the flames. "Is that so? I thought you were paying so much attention to Jay because you were trying to get her attention."
It was as if a nerve had been struck. Beverly Lynch flew into a rage. "Pauline Shaw, if you keep spouting nonsense, I’ll tear that mouth of yours apart!"
Even though she was being cursed at, Pauline Shaw felt incredibly satisfied.
It had been a long time since she’d gotten the upper hand in a clash with Beverly Lynch. Today, she actually felt a sense of vindication.
Seeing the smug look on Pauline Shaw’s face, Beverly Lynch couldn’t help but glare at Jane Lancaster.
Jane Lancaster: "..."
’Hey, why are you glaring at me? Aren’t you usually a great talker? What, you can’t win an argument today?’
’I haven’t even said anything. How did I end up catching a stray bullet?’
Pauline Shaw lowered her head, a smile on her face. ’Why is she glaring at you? Because you’re the one she truly hates.’
’You’ve never been the one catching stray bullets; I’m the innocent bystander who’s been dragged into the drama of your love-hate relationship all these years.’
"What are you looking at me for?" Beverly Lynch jutted her chin at Jane Lancaster. "Pauline Shaw doesn’t have the brains for that. Did you teach her to say that?"
The smile vanished from Pauline Shaw’s face. "...Who are you calling brainless?"
Beverly Lynch didn’t answer, instead sizing up Jane Lancaster.
After a few seconds, she frowned, her face full of disdain. "How did you let yourself become such a wreck? You’re all skin and bones. It’s not a good look."
After all, having lain in a hospital bed for three years, Jane Lancaster was excessively thin. Combined with her tall stature, she gave off an emaciated, skeletal impression.
As a coma patient, her hair had been cut short for easier care, hiding the contours of her face and looking thick and dull.
Mama Knight had been worrying herself sick trying to get her to eat more, and she had only just started to put on a little bit of weight.
Beverly Lynch’s words left a bitter taste in the mouths of everyone present who knew Jane Lancaster well.
After all, the Jane Lancaster from three years ago had long, jet-black hair, fair and flawless skin, and a soul-stirring beauty in the very turn of her eyes.
For some reason, Pauline Shaw’s temper flared. "Watch your mouth! Jay just recovered from her illness!"
"Am I not speaking the truth?" Beverly Lynch stared at Jane Lancaster. "But even though you’ve been sick, the good bones are still there. You won’t be so ugly once you put on some weight."
Jane Lancaster hesitated. "Uh, thanks?"
Beverly Lynch lifted her chin. "You’re welcome. I’m just telling it like it is."
Pauline Shaw: "Beverly Lynch!"
"Unlike you, Pauline Shaw, ugly from childhood to adulthood! With your big, round face, you ugly freak!" Beverly Lynch immediately went on the attack.
Luna Morgan quickly came to her friend’s defense. "Miss Lynch, how can you insult people like that?"
"Oh, I forgot to insult you." Beverly Lynch glanced at Luna Morgan. "You’re the ugliest. Ugly people are always causing trouble!"
"You!" Luna Morgan was no match for her and her face instantly flushed red.
Jane Lancaster was suddenly filled with deep respect for this absolute powerhouse.
With just one mouth, she had managed to offend both the heroes and the villains!
Her ability to draw aggro was truly savage!
Those men who had been staring at her, ready to cause trouble, had all shifted their target, now casting resentful gazes at Beverly Lynch.
One of the men couldn’t help but speak up for Luna Morgan. "And you think you’re so good-looking? From where I’m standing..."
Beverly Lynch: "What are you looking at? A toad dares to critique a human? They might be ugly, but you’re not even human. You’re just an ugly thing. Get lost!"
The man’s face flushed red. "You’re just flaunting your money, aren’t you? What’s so great about that..."
"I’m greater than all of you. At least I don’t force a young woman to drink! And then try to get a free ride!" She turned to look at Luna Morgan. "How much is that necklace?"
Luna Morgan subconsciously touched the necklace on her neck and answered, "18 million..."
Her friend had told her that this necklace was the highlight of today’s exhibition, a one-of-a-kind, limited-edition piece.
She didn’t understand jewelry at all, much less what kind of necklace could cost 18 million. She was worried her friend had gone to all the trouble of organizing this exhibition only for the main piece not to sell.
"Did you hear that? Since it’s no big deal, then why don’t you buy it!" Beverly Lynch glared at each of them in turn. As her gaze fell on them, people lowered their heads one by one.
Even the few who had been jeering the loudest earlier fell silent.
"Are you saying you’re going to buy it?" someone said indignantly.
million was no small sum. Nobody’s money just appeared out of thin air. Why buy such a flashy, impractical diamond necklace?
"Of course I’m going to buy it," Beverly Lynch said. "Get it? This is the difference between you and me. You don’t spend a single cent, yet you act like big shots! You pathetic paupers, you freeloading freaks!"
Now, not only did the men’s faces turn red, but everyone else also looked indignant.
They all felt insulted but were powerless to do anything. After all, they couldn’t actually buy the necklace in a fit of pique.
’Arrogant. That is just too arrogant!’
’Who said Beverly Lynch was stupid? Maybe she is, maybe she isn’t, but she’s definitely fierce! She’s out here dishing out equal-opportunity trauma to everyone she can’t stand!’
Jane Lancaster saw it all clearly.
Luna Morgan had the ability to attract high-quality men, but high-quality men weren’t exactly a dime a dozen. You couldn’t just run into one on every street corner.
On the contrary, the heroine’s fine qualities, like her resilience and kindness, were more likely to attract scumbags.
The men present were surely willing to charge into battle for love, but if you asked them to invest cold, hard cash with no expectation of return, they would definitely back out.
Men from families with a bit of money were especially prone to weighing the pros and cons.
No wonder Beverly Lynch could be so arrogant in the early stages of the story. She was genuinely rich, and she was genuinely willing to spend it.
’She’s so incredibly rich. Is this the happiness only the wealthy know?’ Jane Lancaster was green with envy. ’An 18 million necklace, bought on a whim just to spite someone.’
’Is it too late for me to go suck up to Beverly Lynch now?’
Pauline Shaw felt a pang of discomfort. How could she even think about sucking up to Beverly Lynch?
She shouldn’t even think it as a joke. Jay had been doted on since she was a child, getting everything she ever wanted. There was no need for her to be envious of anyone.
