Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Heavens, You Waited That Long?
That morning, as soon as Jane Lancaster got out of bed, she headed straight for the study.
She hadn’t been idle lately, often staying up late reading in the study.
Mama Knight didn’t quite understand. "Miss Jane, are you preparing for the college entrance exams? The young master said that getting you into a university won’t be a problem, so you don’t have to work so hard."
Jane Lancaster was never worried about getting into college. Julian Lancaster had already arranged everything for her.
But of course, the story’s villainess was ungrateful, arrogantly insisting she would take the college entrance exams herself.
She wanted to prove she was no worse than Luna Morgan... but ended up fainting from exhaustion right before the exams and was rushed to the hospital.
When Luna Morgan found out, she felt incredibly guilty and secretly went to see a certain titan of the academic world.
This master admired Luna Morgan’s talent and wanted to take her on as a disciple, but Luna had declined for various reasons.
She used this as a bargaining chip, agreeing to become his disciple on the condition that he also accept the original Jane as a disciple.
The master had always disliked students who got in through connections, not to mention he’d heard a rumor that the original Jane had fainted on purpose.
But for Luna Morgan’s sake, he reluctantly agreed.
Luna Morgan didn’t tell anyone about this, and she certainly never asked the original Jane if she even wanted it.
The original Jane, suddenly finding herself in the master’s good graces, took it very seriously and decided to host a disciple-acceptance banquet.
The master, thinking Luna Morgan would also be there, agreed to attend.
But when he arrived at the banquet and found Luna Morgan absent, he accused the original Jane of being vain, not focusing on her studies, and resorting to cheap tricks. After thoroughly humiliating her, he stormed out.
Only then did the original Jane learn that Luna Morgan had begged the master to accept her. Instead of being grateful, she resented Luna even more, cursing her for having ill intentions.
In the end, she was expelled from the university—a truly gratifying outcome that had readers cheering for more!
Jane Lancaster stretched. "I’m not taking the college entrance exams, but I do want to quietly blow everyone away."
The exams were the heroine Luna Morgan’s time to shine. As the villainess, she definitely couldn’t clear that level.
She even suspected the original Jane’s fainting spell was a case of being plot-locked.
’But since I’m the one here now, the plot can certainly be changed a little.’
’I can get expelled for being a terrible person, but I will never let myself be mocked as a good-for-nothing who relied on family money to buy a degree through the back door.’
’The latter is a matter of intelligence, and my brain clearly won’t allow for that.’
Mama Knight was confused. ’If she’s not taking the college entrance exams, why is she doing such complicated problems?’
But whatever Miss Jane said was right. "Is this a surprise for the young master? Okay, I’ll keep it a secret."
Her tone grew nostalgic. "But Miss Jane, your grades used to be excellent. You always came in first! Even the third young master would get moody because he couldn’t beat you!"
Jane Lancaster was a bit surprised. "The third young master couldn’t beat me? For real?"
’The character with the highest IQ in this book is supposed to be the Lancaster family’s third young master, Adrian Lancaster.’
’A reclusive young genius, not only the top scorer in the college entrance exams but also blessed with a handsome face that stunned countless people.’
Just as Mama Knight was about to say something, Jane Lancaster’s phone rang.
"Jay, hurry up and come down. I’m waiting for you in the lobby of The Crestwood Hotel." The moment the call connected, Pauline Shaw’s voice rang out.
Jane Lancaster looked at Mama Knight. "Why is she here?"
Mama Knight replied, "Miss Jane, Miss Shaw made an appointment with you to go to the jewelry exhibition today to buy jewelry for the engagement."
Jane Lancaster thought for a moment, surprised. "Did we have plans? She said she didn’t have time. I thought it was canceled."
Mama Knight: "..."
’Miss Jane, you’ve really gotten so mischievous!’
But she didn’t remind Miss Jane that the person on the other end of the line could probably hear her.
It was only in the past couple of days, as she had time to reflect, that she realized just how reluctant and perfunctory Pauline Shaw had been when she agreed to accompany Jane Lancaster to the jewelry exhibition.
’If that’s the case, why did she promise Miss Jane that she could always count on her for anything?’
Now that she thought about it, since Miss Jane woke up, the number of times the other girl had come to the Lancaster Family residence to keep her company could be counted on one hand.
But three years ago, whenever she had any problem, Miss Jane would be there at a moment’s notice to clean up her messes.
Pauline Shaw was furious. She had been waiting for two hours and hadn’t even seen a shadow of Jane Lancaster.
She was reluctant to come in the first place; it wasn’t like she had nothing better to do.
But she needed to see Jane Lancaster about something, so she had rushed over first thing in the morning to wait.
She had asked the hotel’s front desk to let Jane know she was waiting in the lobby’s guest area, but after a long wait with no word, she went back to the desk, only to be told it was a matter of guest privacy?
The infuriating part was that the staff’s attitude was incredibly enthusiastic, but they simply wouldn’t notify Jane, which left Pauline Shaw fuming.
Since this was the best hotel in Stratton and she was a member, she went straight to the guest relations manager.
The manager then ushered her into a reception room, plied her with several pots of tea, and even gave her a compensatory gift, but she still wasn’t granted access.
Pauline Shaw was about to faint from anger!
She gritted her teeth and wanted to leave several times, but after thinking it over... she held back and sent a text to Jane Lancaster.
But the message... went unanswered.
This had never happened before.
In the past, no matter what message she sent, Jane Lancaster would always respond quickly.
’Is she intentionally ignoring me?’ With this suspicion, she tentatively made the call.
This time, the call connected quickly. But what did Jane Lancaster’s words mean? ’Does she really think I’m that desperate to see her?’
"I’ve been waiting for two hours. Didn’t you see my text?" Pauline Shaw asked, suppressing her anger.
"Oh my god, you’ve been waiting that long?" Jane Lancaster’s voice sounded even more surprised. "I was busy and didn’t see my phone, but why didn’t you call? I definitely would’ve picked up if you called."
Pauline Shaw was speechless. "..."
’How could I tell her I didn’t want to call, which is why I asked the hotel to notify her?’
The more she thought about it, the more she felt like an idiot for waiting two hours.
’As expected, nothing good ever comes from being around Jane Lancaster,’ she thought, her expression flat.
"Pauline, am I going to keep you from work today?" Jane Lancaster asked after getting into the car.
"No," Pauline Shaw said, turning the steering wheel. "It’s the weekend, I’m off."
Actually, she hadn’t planned on taking the day off... Her supervisor had previously hinted that he would take her to a business meeting in the next couple of days.
The client was a long-time customer of the company and had a good relationship with her supervisor. The deal was practically a sure thing.
Her supervisor was bringing her along to mentor her and help her boost her performance numbers.
In the past, she definitely wouldn’t have wanted to miss such a great opportunity. But likely influenced by Jane Lancaster’s inner thoughts, she’d spent the last two days suspecting her supervisor had ulterior motives for being nice to her, and her attitude toward him had cooled.
Her supervisor probably sensed it. At yesterday’s meeting, he didn’t mention her, instead naming another colleague to accompany him.
Her colleagues were good at reading the room. That afternoon, she overheard people in the breakroom secretly discussing whether her supervisor had cast her aside due to incompetence.
Pauline Shaw took a deep breath, forcing herself not to think about it.
"You seem pretty happy today," she remarked casually.
"Yep. I have a feeling something good is going to happen today," Jane Lancaster said with a grin, resting her chin on her hand.
’Looking at you, you must’ve been snubbed by your supervisor, right? He’s promoting your rival instead, and you’re not happy about it, are you?’
At the intersection, Pauline Shaw slammed on the brakes.
