Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Dad, Why Did You Do This?

But that wasn’t the point. Jane Lancaster asked, "I have a question. Are you and Lawson close friends?"

Zoe Carter forced herself to calm down. "My dad is a kindhearted man who’s always helping patients at the hospital. Is it so strange that he knows one?"

She felt that Jane Lancaster’s malice was already set in stone. Grasping at these minor details was just a way to shift the blame.

Jane Lancaster turned to Claire Sheffield. "Dr. Sheffield, are you a kept man?"

Claire Sheffield was confused. "I don’t have a girlfriend."

"My apologies. What I meant to ask was, have you been having a long-term affair with a patient inside a hospital examination room?"

This question was explosive. Many people’s eyes lit up when they heard it.

Now *that* was the kind of juicy gossip that would wake anyone right up.

Claire Sheffield met Jane Lancaster’s gaze for two seconds, his expression slowly turning grave.

"Absolutely not," he said solemnly, acutely aware that this question might be related to the case. "I am willing to cooperate with any investigation from the hospital and the police."

"That’s ridiculous! Dr. Sheffield is worked to death every day. He doesn’t even have time for a relationship, let alone an affair!"

A nurse standing nearby couldn’t hold back anymore. She had never heard anything so outrageous.

"Besides, would Dr. Sheffield even need to have a secret affair? He’s the most popular male doctor in our hospital. So many people have tried to pursue him and failed."

"How dare you slander Dr. Sheffield?" Zoe Carter looked at her in disbelief. As one of Claire Sheffield’s admirers, she certainly wouldn’t allow Jane Lancaster to denigrate her idol.

Jane Lancaster gave her a slightly surprised glance.

’She doesn’t seem that clueless. So why would she later suspect Dr. Sheffield was actually having an affair?’

’Could it be a case of love turning to hate? That would explain why she isn’t yelling at Dr. Sheffield, but at me for helping clear his name.’

’Still, I can use this.’

Jasper Sterling’s gaze lowered slightly. He understood what Jane Lancaster meant. "You should be asking your father. He’s the one spreading rumors about Dr. Sheffield."

"Nonsense, I didn’t!" Ethan Carter refused to admit it.

Jane Lancaster said, "Then why did Lawson say you personally witnessed Dr. Sheffield having an affair with his wife behind a pulled curtain?"

Jasper Sterling walked over and looked down at Ethan Carter. "He also told the police that you goaded him into killing Dr. Sheffield, telling him he wasn’t a man otherwise. He said he was acting on your instructions, and that you even told him Dr. Sheffield’s work schedule and location."

Jane Lancaster shot Jasper Sterling a surprised look.

’This guy is too smart. He grasped the crux of the matter from just a tiny piece of information.’

A flicker of emotion crossed Jasper Sterling’s eyes, but he kept his gaze fixed on Ethan Carter, pressing him.

His face was incredibly deceptive, making his lies sound very convincing.

Ethan Carter felt so guilty he didn’t dare to look him in the eye. "I didn’t! It really has nothing to do with me."

Jasper Sterling’s voice was gentle. "You might not understand the situation. He’s identified you as the mastermind. If you really said those things, you’ll probably be the one going to prison."

"And don’t think I’m just trying to scare you. When the time comes to stand in court, do you think you can win an argument against Lawson? I’m sure he’d be more than happy to have some company in prison."

Ethan Carter couldn’t take it anymore. "Why should I go to prison? I was just going along with what he was saying! It has nothing to do with me!"

Lawson had gone too far! To get himself off the hook, he was trying to drag his name through the mud!

Besides, of the three people nearby at the time, both Claire Sheffield and Jane Lancaster had bullied him before, yet the man chose to attack him.

The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. "I’m the victim here, okay? That man is willing to kill someone. What wouldn’t he say to get himself off the hook? How can you possibly believe him?"

Jane Lancaster found this quite interesting.

’Exactly. Such a simple concept, and it takes someone like him to point it out.’

She turned to look at Zoe Carter. "Perhaps you should know, it was Dr. Sheffield who saved your father’s life by grabbing the knife with his bare hands."

After a pause, she added, "Dr. Nathan Larson can testify to that."

Without waiting for Zoe Carter’s reaction, she continued to watch Jasper Sterling.

Jasper Sterling was still pressing him. "So what’s this about you seeing it with your own eyes? Dr. Sheffield saved your life, and you repay him by spreading sordid rumors?"

"I didn’t! I only said I saw Lawson’s ex-wife having an affair with some man at the hospital. I never said it was Dr. Sheffield!"

Seeing everyone staring at him, Ethan Carter stubbornly explained, "You don’t understand, that woman dresses so slutty just to see a doctor..."

"Shut up!" Zoe Carter couldn’t listen anymore.

She knew her father enjoyed critiquing current events, and she had always thought it was because he had a strong sense of justice.

But someone with a true sense of justice wouldn’t twist right and wrong or repay kindness with malice.

This hospital was insanely busy every day. She might not know about other things, but having an affair behind a pulled curtain in an outpatient examination room was simply impossible.

Lying at a time like this and trying to drag everyone down with him... once the hospital investigated, her father would definitely face serious consequences.

Zoe Carter asked through her tears, "Dad, why would you do that?"

Ethan Carter flew into a rage out of shame. "What’s that supposed to mean? I’m your father!"

As his daughter, how could she side with outsiders and question him in public? It was a complete loss of face!

Claire Sheffield finally understood. He had no idea such a rumor was even circulating.

This was utterly absurd. If this wasn’t clarified on the spot, who knew how wild the rumor would become.

"Thank you," he said solemnly to Jane Lancaster and Jasper Sterling. "I will have the hospital investigate this matter thoroughly."

It wasn’t just for himself, but also for the innocent woman who had been slandered.

Jasper Sterling smiled, then suddenly pressed down on the wound on Ethan Carter’s abdomen.

Ethan Carter immediately let out a squeal like a stuck pig. "ARGH! My wound is going to burst open!"

Jasper Sterling released his hand and stepped back. "My apologies. My character is a bit lacking. Please forgive me."

He turned to a few people who were recording and spoke politely, "Could you please help me by deleting the videos and photos you just took?"

He paused, then added, "Consider it me buying them from you, as a small token of my gratitude."

When the young man smiled, his charming eyes sparkled innocently, instantly melting the hearts of a few of the older women.

"It’s fine, it’s fine! We’ll delete them right away!"

"What that man did was so disgusting. Even I couldn’t stand it and wanted to punch him a couple of times. It’s only natural that you got angry."

Jasper Sterling’s smile became even more refined. "My friend and I are in this together. If she gets implicated, I inevitably will be too..."

Seeing his gaze shift to Jane Lancaster, everyone understood.

"Don’t worry about it. You young people are driven by your principles. Well done."

"That old coot got what he deserved!"

"What a passionate young man! And just as handsome as Dr. Sheffield!"

As for those who were a bit reluctant to delete the files, after seeing Jasper Sterling actually pay, they immediately handed over their phones to have them deleted.

Zoe Carter hesitated for a moment but ultimately didn’t step forward to stop him.

Jane Lancaster: "..."

’I knew it. The more innocent his smile, the more trouble he’s brewing.’

’This really isn’t necessary. I hit him, so what? I’m not afraid of it getting out.’

Jane Lancaster’s gaze swept past the crowd, landing on Alvin Lancaster, who was standing a dozen meters away.

’You should understand by now, right? I’m inciting violence.’

’You were bullied for a long time as a child. You despise violence, so you definitely can’t stand seeing this, can you?’

Alvin Lancaster’s lips tightened into a thin line. After a moment, he still looked up and called out, "Jay!"

Only then did Mama Knight remember something she hadn’t mentioned. "Miss, I was the one who called the Second Young Master."

She hadn’t forgotten that the young miss was still upset with the Second Young Master, so of course, she had to be on Jane Lancaster’s side.

She had done it out of desperation earlier, a point that had to be made clear.
