Chapter 21: Chapter 21: The Young Miss is Throwing Her Weight Around Again
The assistant handed over the phone. "I’m sorry, President Lowell. It’s all my fault! The negotiations were extremely difficult, so I didn’t dare to interrupt you. I took the liberty of replying to Miss Lancaster’s messages myself."
His colleagues stared at him in shock, thinking he had lost his mind.
Everyone knew how much the boss doted on Miss Lancaster, personally handling everything related to her. How could he possibly allow his assistant to act so presumptuously!
Sure enough, Caleb Lowell’s face darkened, a storm brewing in his eyes. "Who told you to act on your own..."
He looked at the chat history and suddenly fell silent.
The assistant had not only ordered private dining for Jane Lancaster but had also arranged for an in-room spa service. Around ten o’clock, he had even patiently reminded her to get to bed early.
Jane Lancaster had replied to every message, even sending a smiley face at the very end.
The atmosphere seemed harmonious and congenial, with nothing out of place.
"Don’t do this again," Caleb Lowell said with a slight frown, though his expression was no longer as grim as before.
"I know I was wrong. I’ll be sure to ask for your permission first next time."
Caleb Lowell didn’t say anything.
The assistant immediately understood. This was tacit permission for a "next time."
Thankfully, Young Master Dave had advised him that President Lowell was too busy with work to waste time chatting with women. If the assistant could help shoulder some of President Lowell’s burdens, he would surely be highly valued.
It turned out his gamble had paid off.
Caleb Lowell’s mind went blank for a moment, but just then, his phone vibrated.
It was a message from Chloe Dave, asking if everything was going smoothly on his end.
The Dave and Lowell families were old family friends. Chloe Dave had followed him around since they were kids and was now working on a project with him.
However, Chloe Dave wasn’t quite mature enough, so she needed to be managed.
Caleb Lowell replied to the message and casually clicked into the work log Chloe Dave had submitted. And then he saw Luna Morgan.
There had been an accident at the construction site not long ago. Chloe Dave had gone to offer her condolences, and Luna Morgan had tagged along.
In the photo, Luna Morgan was chatting and laughing with the workers. The spring rains had turned the construction site into a muddy field, but she was like a flower blooming from the mire—pure and unstained.
A sense of calm suddenly washed over Caleb Lowell. He suddenly remembered that tomorrow was Friday.
Jane Lancaster had chatted about so many things today, but she hadn’t mentioned that Dr. Sheffield was going to be attacked.
’If it were Luna Morgan, she would never stand by and watch so cold-heartedly.’
—
That morning, Jane Lancaster accompanied Mama Knight to Aethelan Hospital for a physical examination.
Mama Knight was a little uneasy. "Eldest Miss, this isn’t right. The examination packages here are too expensive. I should just go with everyone else."
The Lancaster Family arranged for their servants to have physicals every year as part of their employee benefits. The clinic they had a long-term contract with offered great prices and considerate service, so Mama Knight felt this was an unnecessary expense.
"You work so hard taking care of me. What’s a little check-up in comparison?"
Jane Lancaster winked at her. "I’ll just get Big Brother to reimburse me later. He’ll definitely praise me for being so thoughtful."
—
Zoe Carter felt it was her bad luck to have run into that ’Celestial’ young miss again.
She was a nurse at this private hospital, but she had a strong moral compass and had always looked down on the extravagant habits of the wealthy.
When she went to the inpatient building and saw Luna Morgan handling her own discharge papers, her indignation peaked.
"Why are you handling the paperwork yourself? Didn’t the Lancaster Family send anyone?"
Luna Morgan replied, "I’m all better now. I can handle it myself. There’s no need to bother anyone."
"How is it a bother? You fainted because you were doing something for Miss Lancaster! Shouldn’t the Lancaster Family send someone to take care of you?" The more Zoe Carter thought about it, the angrier she got.
She recounted how she had just run into Jane Lancaster.
The Second Young Master of the Lancaster Family had seemed quite responsible at first, but after that day, even he was nowhere to be seen.
"I bet she’s the one stopping the Lancaster family from visiting you, and today she even came here to show off." Zoe Carter sneered. "Otherwise, why would she bother personally accompanying an old maid for a check-up?"
Luna Morgan sounded a little helpless. "Miss Lancaster really isn’t that kind of person. You shouldn’t overthink it."
"The Second Young Master broke a bone, so he shouldn’t be going out anyway. As for Mrs. Everett, she’s just a housekeeper..." She trailed off.
’That’s right, Mrs. Everett is just a housekeeper. Alvin Lancaster told her to take care of me. If someone hadn’t stopped her, she would have shown up.’
Zoe Carter said, "See? You’ve noticed the problem too, haven’t you?"
"No, I think it’s perfectly normal." Luna Morgan shook her head. She wouldn’t make demands of others, only of herself.
Having heard up to this point, Chloe Dave finally walked over. "Luna, you’re just too kind."
Luna Morgan was a little surprised. "What are you doing here?"
Chloe Dave was holding her luggage. "I came to pick you up from the hospital! Not just me, Pauline came too. But we were a step too late. We went to your room to look for you, but it turns out you had already run down here to handle the paperwork yourself."
—
Pauline Shaw was just about to walk down the steps when she abruptly stopped. "What is she doing here?"
"Who?" Gordon Dawson held up an umbrella and looked over. "Jane Lancaster?"
Pauline Shaw pulled him behind some shrubbery. "Let’s wait a bit before we go down, so she doesn’t see us again."
Gordon Dawson was getting angry. "Is she here to corner you?"
That woman was so scheming, coming all the way out here in the rain just to ambush someone. She really went to a lot of trouble.
Pauline Shaw was uncertain. "Surely she wouldn’t go that far?"
"Why not? Back then, she had people follow me to my mom’s street stall and stop her from doing business. Weren’t her methods just as vile and vicious then?"
The veins on the man’s hand holding the umbrella bulged as immense hatred surged within him.
Pauline Shaw squeezed his hand, her heart aching for him. "I’m sorry."
When she first heard about all this, she had found it utterly absurd.
Jane Lancaster and Gordon Dawson didn’t even have a real grudge between them, yet she had acted so ruthlessly to destroy his family’s livelihood. It was simply too malicious.
For a time, she refused to believe that her best friend could be such a person.
But Gordon Dawson would never lie, and Mrs. Dawson had no reason to deceive her.
In truth, Jane Lancaster had always been overly mature and rational, even as a child. She was always unflappable and could handle anything that came her way.
The elementary school they attended was a local school for the elite. Some delinquents from a vocational high school decided to target them, wanting to "borrow" some spending money.
In reality, those guys probably weren’t that bad. They were just after money, and it wasn’t like the girls were short on cash. They could have just given it to them and avoided a conflict.
But Jane Lancaster refused. She led the three boys into a small alley... and without a word, smashed one of them with a brick.
A chaotic brawl erupted after that. Jane Lancaster had been professionally trained in boxing, and she fought with vicious precision. Even outnumbered three to one, she didn’t lose ground.
At the time, Pauline Shaw had stood outside the alley, watching with indescribably complex feelings.
On the one hand, she was touched that Jane Lancaster had protected her. On the other, she felt sorry for the three boys who were beaten black and blue.
Looking back on it now, she realized all the signs had been there. That was just the kind of person Jane Lancaster was.
Gentle and generous on the surface, but in reality, vindictive and unyielding.
"I won’t give her another chance to bully you and your family," Pauline Shaw said, her tone firm.
Gordon Dawson raised an eyebrow. "It hasn’t gotten to the point where I need my woman to protect me."
Pauline Shaw couldn’t help but blush.
Her gaze swept over, and her heart skipped a beat. "Is she in some kind of trouble? Why isn’t Mama Knight with her?"
"I doubt it." Although Gordon Dawson said that, he still walked closer with her.
"Heh, so the great young miss was just bored and decided to come out and throw her weight around again," he couldn’t help but sneer.
’This guy is such a coward. Can’t he tell I’m doing this on purpose?’ Pauline Shaw heard the thought.
She looked at the middle-aged man’s sycophantic, bowing posture and was suddenly overcome with disgust.
"Let’s just ignore her. We should go get Luna."
