Chapter 10: Chapter 10: No Wonder the Bone Grew Crooked Later
But three years had passed, and the scales in her heart had long since tipped. She had come to admire Luna Morgan’s resilience and kindness far more.
Not to mention, Luna Morgan was the one who had saved her life.
As for Jane Lancaster, with a three-year gap, the two of them were no longer on the same wavelength, were they?
Before, she had been secretive because Jane Lancaster had just woken up. She worried that Jane was too weak to handle the truth.
Now that Jane’s health was gradually improving, she didn’t need to be so considerate.
"But if I can’t find the time, then there’s nothing to be done," Pauline Shaw said with a flawless smile. "After all, Jay, you’re the one who said you hoped I would make something of myself in my career."
How ironic. The person who had pushed others to work hard and get ahead was now the one who had accomplished nothing.
Even if Jane Lancaster was unwilling to admit it, the fact was that she would probably have to rely on her family’s prestige to get by from now on.
Jane Lancaster understood the meaning behind Pauline Shaw’s smile and was a little speechless.
"Pauline, I heard your boss really values you. That means you’re very capable. I’m sure you’ll get a promotion and a raise and become a manager in no time!"
"I’ll take that as a good omen," Pauline Shaw replied calmly.
If that was meant to be sarcastic, it didn’t matter, because she truly had that confidence.
She had recently achieved some small successes at work, and her boss had praised her in meetings more than once.
Jane Lancaster’s smile grew even more sincere. "Then I’ll be waiting for you to treat me to a feast when you get your promotion and raise."
’You think I’m being salty? Nope, I’m being sincere. I’m waiting for that feast!’
’You’ll certainly make something of yourself. Your boss values you, and a promotion and raise are definitely in the cards. But your family’s company is going to be in deep trouble~’
’Do you really think they value you for your ability? They’re just targeting the Shaw Family. They set a trap, and you fell right into it, obediently handing over secrets, clients, and resources.’
’For other people, the harder they work, the luckier they get. For you, the harder you work, the faster your family’s company goes bankrupt.’
’You’d be better off just slacking off like other rich kids.’
Alvin Lancaster was completely stunned. ’Is Pauline really that naive? Does she believe everything people tell her?’
Pauline Shaw’s expression slowly darkened. She held back her anger and asked, "Do you really mean that?"
The moment she said it, she regretted her slip of the tongue.
Sure enough, Caleb Lowell’s voice came from behind them. "What are you two talking about?"
Jane Lancaster put on a frail and helpless expression. "Pauline, did I say something wrong again?"
Seeing Caleb Lowell’s gaze sweep over, Pauline Shaw slowly exhaled the frustration pent up in her chest.
"No. It’s just... it’s a little too early to be talking about this."
She turned to Mama Knight. "And you don’t have to keep asking me if I’m free. I’m busy with work and don’t have time, but I’ll definitely try my best to make time for the jewelry exhibition."
Mama Knight’s face immediately lit up with joy. "Thank you, Miss Pauline!"
Jane Lancaster also gave a meaningful smile. "You’re so kind, Pauline."
’Trying to cut ties with me already? It’s a little too soon for that, sweetie~~’
Pauline Shaw lowered her head, her expression a little cold.
’If this is Jane Lancaster’s way of tying me to her, she should be satisfied now, right?’
Alvin Lancaster cleared his throat. "Alright, it’s getting late. Jay, you must be hungry. Why don’t we go eat first?"
Jane Lancaster shot him another meaningful glance.
’I almost forgot about you, you simpleton.’
’You must have just secretly gone to see Luna Morgan. You and Pauline Shaw are truly the female lead’s loyal guardians, always revolving around her. You even run to her with a broken bone.’
’Running around like that, no wonder the bone healed crooked and had to be re-broken and reset later.’
Alvin Lancaster stiffened, and a searing pain shot through his injured foot.
’No way, is my fate really that miserable?!’
Pauline Shaw walked over and supported Alvin Lancaster. She believed that he, like her, didn’t want to stay and humor Jane Lancaster.
Everyone was busy. Who had time to play along with her little "running away from home" game?
"Alvin, the doctor told you to rest at home. It’s better if you don’t go out so much from now on. How about I give you a ride home? It’s on my way."
Alvin Lancaster grew anxious. "But I want to stay with Jay..."
He hadn’t done what he promised Mrs. Everett yet. He didn’t want to leave.
Jane Lancaster looked touched. "Second Brother, you’re the best."
’Hee hee, you said it yourself. In a bit, I’m going shopping, going for a citywalk! I’ll lose if I don’t manage to cripple both your legs~’
Alvin Lancaster froze. ’My sister... she’s joking, right?’
Caleb Lowell made the final decision. "Pauline, take Alvin home."
Jane Lancaster was deeply disappointed.
Caleb Lowell looked at the expression on her face, paused for two seconds, and then said, "Jay, I have something to tell you."

He had said that, but Caleb Lowell didn’t say anything right away. Instead, he first took Jane Lancaster out for a meal.
After the meal, there was a knock on the door of the private room, and Caleb Lowell’s assistant walked in with several other people.
It wasn’t until an engagement party proposal was thrust into her hands that Jane Lancaster realized what was happening.
Jane Lancaster had been in a coma for three years, but Caleb Lowell’s love for her never wavered. He had proposed to her in the second month after she woke up.
But just like in many TV dramas, the male lead and the villainess didn’t rush to get their marriage license. Instead, they decided to hold an engagement party first.
Jane Lancaster’s health was poor, and she was constantly in physical therapy, so Caleb Lowell was the one handling everything.
Now that her health had improved significantly, the engagement party was back on the agenda.
After listening to the designer’s presentation, Caleb Lowell turned his head. "What do you think?"
Jane Lancaster said, "...It’s all very nice. I have no objections."
She genuinely had no objections, since this engagement was doomed to fail anyway.
The engagement party was like a carrot dangled in front of a stubborn donkey—the villainess—but she was never going to be allowed to eat it.
The male lead could only belong to the female lead; the villainess had no right to touch him.
Caleb Lowell frowned. Jane Lancaster’s reaction was too calm.
He had been planning this engagement ceremony ever since Jane Lancaster woke up, and its scale was even grander than some actual weddings.
The whole point was to firmly declare to everyone that he would marry no one but Jane Lancaster in this lifetime.
If even this couldn’t put her at ease, then she...
’What a perfect man. Handsome, from a good family, a rising star in the business world, and surrounded by countless admirers, yet he remains devoted only to his comatose fiancée... No wonder the female lead can’t help but fall in love with him.’
Caleb Lowell’s eyes darkened. "There’s nothing between me and Luna Morgan!"
Jane Lancaster jumped in surprise. ’Why is he suddenly so loud?’ "I didn’t say there was anything between you."
Caleb Lowell grabbed her hand, his eyes filled with determination. "Jay, you’ve always been the only one in my heart."
"Luna Morgan nearly got you killed. I can’t even begin to describe how much I hate her! Do you have any idea? When I saw you fall from that building, all I wanted to do was kill her!"
Back then, he had watched from downstairs as the attacker originally lunged at Luna Morgan with a knife.
Jane Lancaster blocked the blow and then, with all her strength, tackled the crazed attacker, and they fell from the building together.
Throughout the entire ordeal, Luna Morgan seemed to be scared stiff and didn’t step forward to help.
If she had immediately helped to snatch the knife, Jane Lancaster might not have had to resort to taking the attacker down with her.
Every time he thought about it, Caleb Lowell couldn’t control his violent rage.
Jane Lancaster spoke reflexively, "But she was innocent too..."
"No, she wasn’t innocent! She knew that scumbag—they were even friends! But she failed to stop him, and she dragged you into it!" A bone-deep hatred filled Caleb Lowell’s eyes.
’Now you’re just being completely unreasonable. The law doesn’t say that a friend has an obligation to persuade a murderer to lay down their weapon.’
"They weren’t just friends. That scumbag said that Luna Morgan was his benefactor..."
’That didn’t stop him from wanting to stab his benefactor a couple of times.’
